Come Rob. Don you know "Rice is nice" ??
They are doing all they can with what they can afford. Does that sound familar? The only things that have changed other than 30 years later is they don't have the choices like we did way back then.
I had a Honda CRX Civic Si, that beat a New Black SS454 chev pickup off a stop light and about 3 blocks down to a place where the street narrowed down to one lane. Suprised the shxt out of that guy.
I loved to blast around in that thing. I once beat 4 kids in a 86?? Z-28 convertable and even missed 2nd. I kinda miss the little car in fact. It was fun to blast around in. Fuzz didn't even give you one look back then.
One thing about it! We are lucky that we grew up in the era that we did. We got the memories and the neat cars. They have their own and they are no slouch for the size of the motors they have not to mention the bummer front wheel drive they have to put up with. I know better to square off with one unless I have some ponys under the hood.

Yes & no, Pantera...
Being 28, I grew up in (and live) in the same era, so I had the same choices they did. My journey started with a '63 Chevy stepside pickup, that we scored for $100...it had a ragged out 283, had a blue cab with a green bed, and had spent the majority of it's life on the farm and in the deer woods, so you can imagine it's condition. But, I spent all summer pounding and cutting and sanding and bondo'ing the piss out of that truck. Then I upgraded to a gutted '69 Chevelle, and the rest is history. I tend to believe that they lean towards the rice based on what they see on the big screen, be it movies or tv. I mean really, when was the last time you watched My Classic Car or American Musclecar and seen an entire 5 minute segment dedicated to "Women's Jello Wrestling"? You can find that, and more, all there on Tunervision...
I agree that with the abundance of "cheap rice" available, that it can indeed be financially motivated. But doesn't it seem like every other one of these cars sports a $3,000 set of wheels/tires and a dvd player in the dash and a $500 wing? Sure, it's their money and if that's what blows their skirts up then more power to 'em! But it ain't for me...

Rob you should tell everyone that we are living at least 15 years behind everyone else! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Heck you didn't even have indoor plumbing till this year. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif The rice burners will be big here in another 3 or 4 years.

Oh Don't get me wrong, I'm with you, I perfer the older cars myself, yet I can also see the attraction to these kids. They just can't afford the supercars that we cherish.
Just think sometime in 2050 some of them will be collecting a Mugen or (I don't know the names of most of top ones) one of the other tuners just like we cherish a Yenko or Motion.
I can remember all the hubub over the model T and A's back when I was young. So it just goes on as time goes by. Interests change. I just hope someone will protect these cars that we all love so much for the next 500 or 1000 years. I guess by then they will be so old nobody will be interested in them anymore. I sure hope not.
