View Full Version : $2 Million Hemicuda

Just got my Dec 04 issue of Mopar Action mag. It features a article on the last Hemicuda convertible built which recently changed hands for 2 million bucks.

Noted Mopar restoration Guru Roger Gibson made the deal happen.

Who said Muscle Car prices are 'soft'?

The last US production hemicuda ragtop (May 71 built) was my old yellow one which I dont think has sold (Charley do you know?) I believe one of the two export cars (1 grey, 1 blue) may have a higher VIN. Any one have any additional gossip? Several people have turned down that amount but I havent heard of any actual sales. -NJSteve

I don't have the article but I assume they are talking about the White with black billboards one that Gibson restored.

Wow! I just can't believe people are willing to pay that much money for those cars. I would think a 1 of 1 built car like the 68 Z28 convertible would bring the most money. What's so special about a hemi convertible? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif And yes, that is sarcasm on my part!

Maybe because they look better than a Z28 convert and have alot bigger engine. The car is staying in the states thanks to the buyer. It was destined for England.

Jeff Murphy

That would have been going to the Carlos Monteverde collection? He's got a lot of super rare hemi cars and frequently trades up for lower mileage cars, etc.

Yep....thats the one Charley.

Article states the current owner is Bill Weimann, same guy that paid $1 million for the blue car about a year ago. The white/black billboard car was a French-export. History on the car is a bit fuzzy, but it does state that Gibson completed the restoration last June.

About the $2 million dollar Hemi Cuda----it is white with black billboards. I am sure because the car was in my showroom for 2 weeks before it was picked up for delivery. Roger Gibson and I are very good friends and he brings many of these great cars to my shop for transportation to their owners.
It is a beautiful car but being a devout Yenko fan, it paled in comparison to the Yenko's across the showroom. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif floor.

Couple of other interesting details about the car considering it was exported to France:

1. It is radio delete because France used a different frequency band.
2. The speedometer is calibrated in kilometers per hour rather then mph.
3. The top of the radiator core support is stamped with the VIN which has a pentastar at each end of the number. This was done when it landed in Paris.

I have heard that there were 9 - 71 Hemicuda convertibles made. (7 domestic, 2 for export) I have always wondered:
Have all 9 survived?
What were the color combinations?

njsteve
08-30-2004, 08:48 PM
The ones I can recall are as follows:

1 yellow/white int, automatic
1 butterscotch/black int, auto
1 orange/orange int, auto
1 red/black int, auto
2 blue/blue int (both 4 speeds)
1 winchester grey (export)

I dont have the info on the white car

One of the blue ones

The yellow one
http://www.azalea.net/~steved/yellowt.jpg
Both having a connection to Kevin Suydam, I assume they are the real deal for discussion purposes.

Are there more accounted for?

NJ-Steve is this the yellow one you refer to as owning, the one Don Johnson copied for the show?

Found this too, not sure who or how accurate:
[ QUOTE ]
This post is basically for Mr. Suydam himself, but the information might be useful to everyone else. If one reads the june issue of Mopar Muscle magazine they will finf out that the two exported 71 Hemi "cuda Convertibles have been found, but out of the Seven 71 Hemi 'Cuda Convertibles built for the states, and the one sent to Canada, only seven have been found. That makes a total of NINE 71 Hemi 'Cuda Convertibles FOUND, however TEN were MADE. Good luck searching for the last one.

No telling who owns what car at any given time. "Deep pocket" guys spar for these cars and trade in a world well above the average enthusiast. Its my understanding that the Cuda was in a package deal that would equal a lottery winning ticket rather then a auto transaction.

In any case, according to Galen Govier, nine cars were made for the US market and two were export. Its possible that others exist, but it would require extensive documentation.

You have to admit the story makes for a nice treasure hunt.

I wasn't so much interested in names, I wouldn't know any of them anyway, way over my head. But would be cool to find out 3 are in Texas, 6 in New York, 1 mysterious one in Charley's building..... something like that. Wouldn't surprise me to know that a board member has one of em.

It's something cool, easy to track with so much money and a small number. I bet several in here could rattle of the current stats on most of them. I've never kept up with Mopars, but I sure dig the Hemi's!!!

While looking for the Cuda's I found this, I LOVE as found photo's of cool cars...

Yup, that's my old old car. Bought it in B- condition for $24,000 in 1985, then did a minor restoration on the car, got it in a few magazines and sold it during my last year of college for $54,000 to Otis. At the time everyone thought I was nuts (when I bought it: for paying too much and when I sold it: for taking advantage of Otis by selling it for so much) Gotta love those 1980's prices. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

The silver car is most likely the Winchester grey export car. The white car is a 1971 Challenger clone. The only year a Hemi Challenger R/T convertible was produced was 1970. I believe the number built was 9. In 1971 there were no Challenger R/T convertibles made at all, only hardtops, so therefore no Hemi Challenger R/T convertibles were produced. -NJSteve

Just wait until the company that's repopping new '69 Camaro convertible bodies (and others) starts doing 70/71 Cuda convertibles (see the latest Hot Rod magazine cover story). No doubt Mopar will keep making versions of the Hemi crate motor, especially if we enthusiasts keep buying them at $15K each. Sounds like soon we could have "70/71 Hemi Cuda" convertibles for about $50,000 to $75,000, ready to roll. No "pedigree" with such a car but I'll bet it's coming.

What i find amazing about these cars was how fast the value of them are going up. It wasent more than 3 years ago that you could buy them for around 500k. It wasent a year ago that they were selling for 1 mill. Now they've doubled in less than a year!!! Multi-million $ muscle car!? (http://www.foxnews.com/leisure/2014/05/20/171-plymouth-hemi-cuda-next-multi-million-dollar-muscle-car/)

It's unlike Kevin to sell w/o replacing. Is it known if he has a 71 Hemi vert lined up to replace it?

Yep, an old thread but pretty good info of where these cars were @ 10 years ago.
BS27R1B315367 is being offered @ the 06/14 Mecum Seattle sale, it'll be interesting to see where things go.

That was my old car. Kevin had it a while and sold it to buy the blue car he is selling now. He mentioned that he always regretted getting rid of the yellow car...maybe he wants to buy it back now?

The yellow one is part of The Brothers Collection and not for sale.

They should buy the blue one so I can sit in that one, too. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif

Charley, Tell them I said Hi, next time you talk to them.

Actually, I remember that blue one from when I lived in Denver in 1980 and it was part of the Soneff family collection. If I recall correctly it had been hit in the rear early in its life and was repaired. (The other blue four-speed car was a former race car).

They already have a blue one.

Anyone have the 'In Violet' Canadian car VIN to add, again feel free to add/correct/update any info I posted a couple pages back?
Love the P-51...is that PE 414061 P-51B Little One 3?

Question: I was wondering about the original ownership of the blue 'vert. Why is the original owner of the car such a secret? "famous cartoonist?" I guess he's still alive and doesn't want to be known?

In any event, anyone know the original location of puchase? Just curious....

And the L88 went back home. In the past his collection has grown, and when a car was sold it was replaced by a rarer version. Not sure if this is the beginning of the liquidation of the collection or not.

Wonder if Kevin did drop his reserve @ the $3,350,000 mark,if it would've begun a lil more bidding frenzy & he might have gotten even more for it..

More like he was adamant on sticking to his reserve. Once Mecum got the phone bidder past the reserve the car sold with handshakes and smiles all around.
