"Just like the mechanics at Yenko did, Kelley stuffed in a 425 horsepower 427 L-72."

Sounds like GoodGuys should stick to Street Rods http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Here is the "Rest of the story" , as Paul Harvey would say:
I was at the Goodguys show , since it is about 20 miles from me. I brought my 67 GT500 (see it in the Member's Rides section) , and my friend brought his 70 Orbit Orange RAIV 4 speed Judge. Both of our cars were displayed with all the paperwork proving they were real, etc. Saturday we were informed that we had to come back Sunday , because we won "big awards". So , of course , you can imagine our suprise when we got the "Ford Muscle" and " Sensational Seventies" awards , and didn't even place for the "Muscle Car of the Year" award. Nothing against the cars that did place, but they were pretty questionable. A 68 GT350 that the owner admitted was painted 10 years ago and he someday "was going to undercoat it and clean up the undercarriage" (automatic car, lots wrong), the 70 GT500 was very nice , a little lacking in body work, but it had "eyes", the CLONE Yenko that the owner may admit now is a clone, but during the show and even during his acceptance speech raved about how real it was and how rare Yenkos are!!, the 68 Camaro was pretty but had radial tires and sat all wrong, like it had air shocks with 200 psi in them, and it was an off color.

I have to say that the final picks (and the clone winning) was somewhat odd. The cars were nice , but there were better cars there. If I had a nickel for everybody that came by my GT500 and said that it was hands down the best car there I could at least buy a bratwurst . And I heard a lot of people grumbling about the clone.

All this just confirms that I need to try harder to avoid these shows where the picks are purely political and the judges have the slightest clue as to what they are looking at.

I am just glad the Yenko owner finally fessed up. It was a good looking car , but c'mon , if that is what we were in it for we would all build clones. There is something to be said about having a real car. It is history. And I am also proud to say that while 99.9% of the other cars at the show were being loaded in and out of trailers all weekend, our two cars were commuting back and forth each day ! One tank of race gas per trip in the GT500 ! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/haha.gif

So now you know "the rest of the story" - or at least my version!

Colin, I agree, that sucks... And what is sad, you are not the first to suffer the same fate. Many of us supercar owners have been down the same road, from some of the top shows in the country. That was the reason for SCR1, to provide at least one show a year where owners could display their car(s) without the usual games. And, thankfully, since SCR1, other shows, Gibb, York, Berger, have begun providing similar venues to showcase our cars.

I was once told at a large Chevy show that I could not compete for best Camaro, as I had a Yenko, not a Camaro.

What is a shame, the public is the one who pays when this type of thing happens, becasue, as you said, you will avoid these shows in the future.

Goodguys is not very concerned with numbers cars..stuff like the skull thingy that Charley posted is their bread and butter...the Camaro must have been nice and who knows..maybe mis-represented to the judges...plus I heard from reliable people that they knew the scrawny geek with the GT500 was Colin and they couldn't have a picture of him associated with Goodguys for fear of scaring people away.

But Gags, I had my pants on - how did they know I was scrawny ? Oh wait, I thought I saw your old lady there. Can you please tell her to bring my shoes back? I had no idea you were such a good runner. Still sorry about all that http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/BelairSucks.gif

Tom,
I like your Yenko story. I had a similar problem with my 69 Hurst/Olds at a show last year. The guy classing the cars put me in with the 442s. I told him that a H/O was NOT a 442, and that I should be properly placed in another class. He decided to show me how much he knew and looked square at the mailbox on the hood and said "Listen, if you've got that 442 cubic inch engine, you are a 442. It says so right on your hood!"

I threw it in reverse and went home. I couldn't argue with logic like that! I am just glad he didn't see any correlation between the "HO" on the hood and my girlfriend in the pasenger seat ! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I saw the clone Yenko at that show. It was nice looking and clean but anyone that knew anything about basic Yenko ID could have picked it out as a clone.

The Orbit Orange GTO was one of my favs!!!

csx289,

You were lucky to even be at a show that had a class for 442's! I have been stuck in some wierd classes with my '69 H/O. In certain shows they almost want to have it in a custom catagory! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif As for anyone calling my wife a H/O, they might feel funny waking up in the hospital! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Everyone take a deep breath! I am the owner of the 69 Camaro that won the Good Guys Muscle Car of the year award. The show was awesome!! More eye candy than you can take in one day. I would like to respond to Collin by saying that his car is indeed outstanding, why it was not in the final five is beyond me!! I myself, questioned as to how the five finalists were chosen as there were many great cars that were "overlooked". Lets not forget that Good Guys is a hot rod club ( I am a member), not a muscle car club. Missing from the show were Hemi Cudas, Royal Pontiacs, Ford Lightweights, ZL1s, "Real" Yenkos .....were do I stop?? None the less, as with any car show that is not a "points" show....it will come down to the judge(s) opinion, tastes, likes, dislikes, etc... Now, for the facts. I had dozens of people give me compliments on how nice my car was... I too, could have bought a couple of brats if I had a nickle for everyone who told me I had the best car in the show. I told EVERYONE that talked to me about the car that is was a clone, including the photographer from good guys (before the judging had occurred), as well as the other finalists. I was not out Bull----ing people during the show or after as to the authenticity of my car. I do not have some plastic board in front of the car stating that it is a real Yenko. I did not give an acceptance speach at all, I mearly stated that it took me three years to build the car to get it to the present state. I will only say that my car is awesome!! I say that not to brag, but, because I am proud of the way the car turned out after a three year resto. For what its worth, I also won BEST DETAILED CAR and BEST YENKO of the Super Chevy Show in Joliet. A fellow syc member who owns a Jack Douglas Yenko (neat car!) was at the show... he complimented on how nice the car was. I understand the frustration of many fortunate guys who own numbers matching original cars....but lets face it guys, there are more "would be owners" of muscle cars than there are cars available. I would hate to think unless you have $50K+ to spend that you are relagated to driving a slant six Duster (sorry Mopar guys)?? I will be the first in line to say "string em up" to those who try and sell a clone as an original car, we all know someone that has been burned badly....that bad taste is tough to get rid of. Did'nt mean to get long winded, just wanted to clear the air. Hope I did'nt step on anyones toes??

You have to shrink it to under 100K.

If you can't do it, send it to me and I'll shrink it and send it back to you.
Send me a PM on this if you want.

Dave you hit the nail on the head,Good Guys Meets are JUDGE Picks! It is what ever the Judge likes and that is it.Just because there is a High dollar Real Yenko,Mustang ,OLDS,or whatever it doesen't matter if it is a Replica or Real Numbers matching etc.It is strictly what the Judge likes.I went a couple of years ago with 20 other friends and my car was picked as best restored muscle car and one other friends car was picked.I asked the Judge why my car was picked over some of the others and he specifically told me he loved 67 chevelles and the color of my car caught his eye ,and that he liked the detail of my chevelle, and the fact that it was a driven car not trailered.I grant you there were 3 other 67 Chevelles that were nicer than my car but they did not get picked.Honestly if I was a Judge I would have picked a white 67 Chevelle over my car.It was immaculate in every way.Good Guy's is strictly up to a Judge making a pick!No points, doesent matter if it is a real super car or a replica or a old rat rod. That is why a lot of people attend Good Guy's because no matter what you go in you actually have a chance to be picked!I might add that I have entered Super Chevy 3 times and never won anything at all! But then again the first year my car was completed it won at Houston Autorama!Yera 2 at Houston autorama I came in second and year 3 I came in third!I love going to shows to have fun and meet a lot of people an look at cars.If I win something that is great if I don't then so be it I still had fun and meet some nice people and looked at a lot of nice cars.

I had a situation at a car show when they had too many cars in my catagory and not enough in the catagory beneath mine, so in there wisdom they put my car into the lower catagory and then nailed me for every little problem to make the judging more fair. Not that im bragging, but my car has never takin anything less then first in any car show i've ever entered it in. I was clearly the winner in either catagory, even the compitition were telling me they're fighting for 2nd. Well i ended up in 2nd, i was shocked and then they give me an award for best display and said "why are you complaining, we have to give first to other people sometime or nobody will compete", besides we gave you a best display trophy". Well if they want to beat me BUILD A BETTER CAR!!...................That was the last car show i ever entered, other then charity events.

Those D-spoke Americans with the silver painted spokes look great on your '69 Yenko clone. Nice car! If you're going to clone something you should do it as well as this car appears to have been done. Nothing wrong with a clone when the owner gets it right and is honest about it. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

I have never entered a car show that seemed to be 100% fair.I don't think I ever will.I just like to have fun.Everyone of us that has a classic car or more than one know that our cars are special. And that there is always someone with more money can do more or better than someone else.It is not about having the nicest car to me but rather about resurecting an old classic to something a lot better than it was before I owned it,and most of all having some fun,I would bet that it is fair to say that everyone has entered a show at one time or another that felt the judging was not fair.I know a local guy that gets offended if he don't win something everytime out!And grant you he does have some really nice cars.I just like to see an old classic's come back to life, have some fun and meet nice people during the whole process.I personally do not have the patience to restore a car like some people do to a 100 point show car that is perfect. For one I don't have those kind of funds.I have that old Japanese disease called FUNDSARELOW all the time!LOL I love to look at the perfectly restored cars though and just see what the people have done with them, and just imagine what it takes to get something like that accomplished.I personally would be scared to drive something like that and I love to go cruising and pull a few gears on the old Richmond 6 speed sometimes, especially up against some of the newer camaros, mustangs and firebirds.Nothing like hearing those old big blocks wind up and bump the gears, especially on a finely tuned and balanced engine.I think the best thing I ever did was remove the m22 muncie and install the 6 speed trans.something the Yenko,Copo or Zl1 guys would never do and if I could afford a Yenko or some other type of Super car I would not dare to do that either.I like cruising about 70 MPH running 2000 RPM'S with the AIR BLOWING COLD.But again I built my old hoopty to drive and cruise anywhere.I hope to make the Power Tour this year and maybe see some of you guys there.Good luck to all that enter the shows and let us see there car's displayed, hope you all win First Place. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

HI BOBBY, THANKS FOR THE INSIGHT..... NOT EVERYONE CAN BE A WINNER AT EVERY SHOW. I WAS PLEASED TO WIN THE AWARD. AS YOU SAY, IT REALLY COMES DOWN TO ANOTHER CAR GUYS OPINION. I WISH I WAS ABLE TO POST BETTER PICTURES ON THE SIGHT, BUT THE 100000 BYTE LIMIT IS TOUGH TO GET AROUND. HECK, ANOTHER MEMBER WAS NICE ENOUGH TO OFFER TO EDIT THE PICS FOR ME, BUT THEY ARE TO BIG TO EMAIL?!? ANYWAY, I GUESS WHEN I GUY BUILDS A CLONE, HE HAS TO EXPECT THAT HE WILL CATCH SOME FLACK, AND I'M OK WITH THAT....ANYONE WHO WOULD SEE MY CAR IN PERSON WOULD SURELY AGREE THAT IT WAS DONE RIGHT WITH NO SHORT CUTS. BOTTOM DOLLAR, BUILD WANT YA WANT AND HAVE FUN WITH IT!!

I know what type of car it takes to win at Good Guys and to be able to take the Muscle Car of the Year Award you have one FINE CAR.I myself own a Replica Nickey Chevelle and it is a nice old hoopty,at least it is what I like and enjoy.I am sure you enjoy your car also.Heck everyone can't afford a real SuperCar.If I did I would loose weight fast because I couldn't afford to eat anymore LOL.Dont let anyone get you down because you own a Replica. For a lot of people not to like Replicas there sure a lot of them out there. And Remember that you already have the award and it can't be taken away.Good Luck at future shows and happy motoring.

To the best of my knowledge there were no big block acadians, all the ones i found here were all small blocks. I had a friends brother running a 67 ss nova running in the superstock catagory when i was in high school. He held the record in his class, always liked the car and wanted to build one just happen to find the acadian first. 2 of my friends liked what they saw and started building some 67 nova's. I had a real nice 68 Beaumont Sport Deluxe ragtop, all original copper with a biege top and copper interior. Nice car, but only had the 283 in it, little underpowered for my needs. Fun for a daily driver though. Here's a shot of the car when i first found it.

What a funny topic !!
I leave before trophy time. Try driving a Lift off hood car to a local shows and even some local mopar shows. Down here I could buy a couple of hotdogs(brat)and a soda for,why don't you put some wheels on the car or why didn't I paint the hood the same color as the car? My friends get all mad and have even thrown the trophies in the garbage in front of everybody. Now that's funny and we do Big Burn outs on the way out !! These are ALL Hemi's and sixpack cars doing burn outs. I drive with a pack of about 10 cars. Cool sight!
But guys ,I like when a guy walks up and is in love with my cars and the people giving thumbs up while driving down the road. That's my Trophy
Not when I'm at the National's and the winner is a 72 C$#^**%# with stickers all over the car and by chance his dad was a very BIG sponsor. That was another funny moment in life that makes you scratch your head and go Hmmmm !!
