I have an idea what the term "Day 2" means, the second day of new car ownership, but I'd like to hear from the forum as to how the term came about and how it's applied to certain cars.

http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif in advance.

Day 2 as used here means a car that was modified by the dealer after the owner bought it as opposed to before the owner took delivery.
Say a guy goes in to Yenko in 67 and buys a Camaro L78 and then goes racing. He decides that his car is not fast enough and goes back to Yenko and says ..."I want a 427 to make this thing faster." Yenko installs a 427 and what ever else the guy wants. This is a day 2 car.
Please correct me if I am wrong guys.

That's not quite what it means to me!

Day 2 indicates a car that gets restored today with aftermarket speed parts specific to the '60's and '70's. The term 'Day 2' is used because so many guys installed their Cragars and traction bars the '2nd day' they owned it!

What 'Day 2' is not: calling up Summit today with your credit card number and ordering up speed parts that are not from 'back in the day'. That is called 'Day 30+ Years', but is a lot easier than trying to find the correct original parts or the correct original speed parts!

I think Day 2 cars done correctly are pretty cool, it's something more to learn since I was only 2 when my Yenko Deuce was produced http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Hello---
Gotta go with Marlin on this one. I love Day 2 cars the most, I guess it's just what I remember and at this point in my life......they just put a big grin on my face when I see one!!!!

However Marlin......my Cragars are new but my Lakewoods are old, please, please don't make me go looking for 30 year old Cragars...!!!!.......hehehe....

I think you were talking about carbs/intakes and other goodies. Am I correct??? I really want a Day 2 car, but I don't want a Year 30+ car...

By the way.....Day 2 is REALLY not very popular with the younger folks......oh well...

I see "Day 2ing" as an owner just taking delivery of his New Machine, and going home to remove the SMOG components,if equipped,& other restrictive parts, then installing Headers,Cragars,Ladders,Thrusters,Tachometers and anything else that ends in ER. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

No, Pro Street is popular with the younger guns. Like Marlin says...Jegs and Summit can help you in Pro Street. Day 2 really just means making something good a little better. That is one reason why Wally Parks pushed Hot Rod magazine because it gave the aftermarket industry exposure. A real good day 2 car is great to look at and rewarding to the owner, but one has to achieve a high level of condition and originality before you put it in Day-2. Remember the cars did come purely original once! If you young guys need to look at these Day-2 items just get in touch with Joe Barr and his brother Erik and get your notebooks and camaras ready. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/scholar.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burnout.gif

Cragars came out in a direct bolt pattern only the first 2 years of production but if you REALLY want to get technical you can check out a 1967 Cragar catalog and see the word "Vari-Lug". Cragars were made in both direct bolt patterns and unilugs(varilugs)in those days. You can tell the early varilugs buy the horsehoe shaped indentation by the lug nut area.

Some young guys do like Day 2. Most of the nostalgia 1923-34 Ford Hot Rods are being built by young guys 20-25 years old.
At Goodguys in Columbus 90% of the nostalgic hot rods built are by guys in that age bracket. I think the 68-74 era street machine trends and Day 2 cars will also be built in the future by guys in that age bracket also.

Here is a Camaro that is in the truest sense Day 2. Second owner but bought the car in 1970 from the dealership after the first owner traded it back in with 2K miles.Modified the car in the '70-'73 era. Garaged in mothers garage since 1975 and brought out last year for the first time since then because the mom was going into a nursing home and the house was being sold. Car has 32 or 37K original miles and has only touch up paint here and there (on the bottom of the fenders etc).

Yes, I have all those old Cragar catalogs too... I quit looking at them because I suddenly develop the urge to go out and try to find real-life examples of everything in the catalogs... Boxes of vintage mag wheels start taking up ALOT of room very quickly... I still remember the day SK Kid and I looked through some old Sun and SW catalogs and I decided it would be neat to get "1 or 2 NOS tachs to display"...careful, it gets addicting. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Whitetop, that Burnished Brown '69 Camaro is right on. Look, no spoilers! Is that a Z/28 emblem on the front fender? "Z/28 SS" cars were very common in the '70s...

Ktownkid, both of those Novas are right on too. Cragar S/S's are so old school. I have two new-in-box 15x6's in my garage and I'm debating whether to use 6's all around or 7's on the rear of my '67 RS/SS 396 as an alternate set of wheels/tires. Decisions, decisions.

Camarojoe, is that your '69 Harrell Camaro? That's the look I'd like to do with my '67, except those Cragars look like the 4-inchers up front. Are the rears 6-inchers?

smog bungs

[/ QUOTE ]

"Bungs?" I need to look that up.

From Webster's:

bung (noun) 1. a cork or other stopper for a hole in a barrel, cask, or keg 2. a bunghole --- vt. 1. to close (a bunghole) with a stopper 2. to close as with a bung; stop up 3. [Slang] to bruise or damage, as in a fight: with 'up' 4. [British Slang] to toss; fling; throw

That's verbatim from the dictionary.

Anyone remember the Saturday Night Live 'commercial' for "Bungking?" Leslie Nielson was the guest host and did the Bungking commercial bit. It was hilarious.

Wow what a great topic this is! I am a HUGE day 2 fan myself and day 2ed the heck out of my Chevelle but for some reason I have held out on the Yenko. When I first got it I bought all the NOS vintage speed parts for it that I have in the basement ready to go. Maybe...... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

Day 2 is great because the car just looks, sounds, and probably drives better with the parts on it. It is also good for the guys that have a nice car that they don't want to hear all the nitpickers bash on.

Two of my day 2 rules are as follows. NO radials or modern batteries. Don't call your car a day 2 car if the above is attached to your car! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif There are other alternatives like Battery Toppers and repop "vintage" style Mickey Thompson or Pro Trac tires.

Whitetop give them the "Daves list" of parts NOT to put on your day 2 car. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Hi Frank---
Yep.........I have a battery topper but have BFG's on the car. I don't really like the M/T's or Pro Tracs. They were not very popular in my neck of the woods. I had Polyglas and Firestone L60-15s and other "store brands". I wish they still made L60 and E60 Polyglas tires.

Thanks for all the good info guys-

I've collected some "Day 2" stuff for my '67 RS/SS/L35. Cal Custom valve covers (to be chromed), an Edelbrock C396 intake, two Cragar S/S 15x6 wheels. I think I'll get 7-inchers for the back. Then, Coker G70 redlines in back, E70s up front. Do they make H70 redlines??? If I put headers on I think I'd want to go with new coated Hookers but that would be my only concession to new parts--that are visible, that is.

The goal would be to have a car that looked like I stopped at the tire shop on the way home from the dealership in 1967 and swapped on the latest mags and red-stripe tires on my brand-new Camaro. Then, in an effort to wring more power out of the "Impala" 325-horse 396, I'd put the C396 on with a Holley. (Yes, a cam change is in order, as is a shift kit for the Th-400, but you can't see that stuff.) I hope nobody points out that my Cragar S/S's are new and not "NOS originals." Let's keep this fun and not nit-pick it to death, okay guys!

It seems I have been a Day 2 fan for a long time, I just didn't know it had been an identifiable trend. 'Trend' is used in a good way here. I'm all for it!

Here's my "Day 2" '67 Camaro back in 1983, on the left. It was in the mid stages of body/paint (Tahoe Turquoise). It had a nice 327 with solids, a '70 M-22 that I paid $180 for in 1980, and a 12-bolt 3:55 Posi.

My best bud's '67 SS 396 is at right. It began life as a L35/Th-400 car with a 2:79 Posi, but by the time this photo was taken it had a 4-bolt 396, rect. heads, and a T-10. Oh, and 3:55 gears replaced the 2:79's. Originally a Marina Blue/black vinyl top car.

I sold my Tahoe Turquoise car in 1985 but bought a stock 396/325 '67 in 1999. After seeing my buddy's '67 396 car I had wanted one ever since--I love the look of those Turbo Jet 396 flags on the '67 Camaro fender. My buddy put a crate LS-7 in his Marina Blue '67 in 1988 and he still has the car and drives it once in a while.

In 1983, I turned 17 years old and purchased my first car. It was a "Day Two" 1972 Chevelle. It had a Cowl Induction Hood, a small block, M-22 and a 4:10 12 bolt rear. It sat up very high, because of big block springs up front and air shocks out back. Cragars all way around and N50's on the rear. It also had bright yellow Lakewood Ladder Bars, a finned aluminum rearend cover and Sun Blue Line Gauges. All the elements of a "Day Two" car!
During that time, my neighborhood had these types of cars everywhere. Especially, since we had speedshops like Motion Performance, Russ' Speedworld and S&K Speed nearby.

Rick,
I always like the 1972 Chevelle Super Sport. In 1988, I restored the Chevelle that I still currently own. Even at that time, "Day Two" was still very popular. I couldn't help myself and I put Centerline Auto Drags on it with
15x3.5's up front and 15x10's out back. A few years back, I sandblasted the original five spoke wheels and put Polyglas GT's back on it. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif
