Once again the promoters of Fall Vettefest have asked the sYc to do another Supercar Showcase. This year's event will be held Nov. 20-21, 2004 at Chicago's McCormack Place. They would like to do some pre-event press releases of what will be attending, so once you know what you will be showing, please let us know so we can forward it on the VF.

Contact VF for registration and other information,

Jeff, cool looking flyer. Steve's '57 really looks good on there. And I see Al included the club's logo as well. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif

On a more somber note, hard to believe that it was less then a year ago, at VF, that my wife and I got the pleasure of dining with Chip and some of the other Vette guys. A really nice guy who will be sadly missed.

Have made arrangements, where a video production company will be at Vettefest filming the sYc's supercar showcase. Motorsports Unlimited provides 28 cable channels in and around the Chicago area (parts of Wis, Ind. and Ill.) with weekly mortorsports shows. Besides footage of the cars, the history of the supercars will be discussed as well as interviews with car owners.

Well, VF is almost here and it appears the sYc's area will be "a buzz" with activity again this year. Besides the outstanding lineup of supercars, Rick (mr70) is bringing a ton of neat stuff, including the original Motion sign he just purchased. Also, Sandlin's '57 will be in a special showcase, spinning on a turntable thanks to Dave (mrrec).

The Mrs. and I hope to arrive in Chitown mid morning Friday. When is everyone else planning on puiling in?

Dear mom and dad. Having fun and meeting a lot of nice folks, please send money. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Friday night ran into several members, including Belair and sixtiesmuscle. Belair was carrying around 2-3 gold spinner awards, which he said he won, but I am inclined to believe he got them at a flea market. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif Thanks to Belair, did get to sample some Chicago style pizza. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

The sYc club display is drawing a lot attention again this year. Out in front is Sandlin's '57, being showcased on one of mrrec's turntables. Next is mr70's dealer sign display, really neat. All this is followed by two rows of supercars. Several of the cars were judged yesterday and it will be interesting to see how they do. Rumor has it, one scored a 999(not mine). http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

The shooting of the video was fun. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/headbang.gif

I am working on two hours sleep, so bear with me, but here goes.

First of all, my apoligys to Rich for his car not getting parked in the sYc area. A really well done car, which is evident by the fact that Rich took home one of the coveted Top Gun awards, along with Steve Sandlin. This makes 3 for the sYc in 2 years, Rich & Steve, 2004, and Frank A. 2003.
2005 ????

Here is how I think it went.

Yenko Sportscar Club, special club participation award
Tom C.- '69 Yenko Nova, Gold Spinner
John P.-'69 Douglass/Yenko Camaro, Gold Spinner
Glen Hanson-'69 COPO Camaro, not-judged (GS quality)
Frank M.-'70 Yenko Nova, Blue/Gold Bow Tie Boulevard
Rich G.- '69 Yenko Camaro, Top Gun & Gold Spinner
Chad B.-'69 Yenko Chevelle, not-judged (GS quality)
Steve Sandlin, '68 Chevelle, DH conversion, not judged
Steve Sandlin- 2004 HRSS, Blue/Gold Bow Tie Boulevard
Steve Sandlin- 1957 Belair conver., Top Gun & Gold Spinner
Frank M., SR- '01 Camaro, Blue/Gold Bow Tie Boulevard
Frank and Caleb A.- '69 COPO Camaro, Gold Spinner(999 pts.)

Now to the women folk.

Ginny Hasset, 1994(?) Camaro, Blue/Gold Bow Tie Boulevard
Helen & Nancy Gibb, '02 ZL-1 Camaro, Blue/Gold Bow Tie Boulevard

And, I know there were a few other folks who hang out here who had cars there. Hopefully they will let us know how they did.

Special thanks to Rick (Mr70) for the dealership display and Dave (mrrec) for the turntable. And to Kenny, Gus, Darren and the other fine folks who were there to lend a hand when needed.

Even though there were less supercars attending this year, the public, and the judges as well, were really impressed with the sYc display, especially the qaulity. And speaking of judges, top notch. I do not envy their job. The gentleman who judged my Nova was a former NCRS judge, who was very knowledgeable, and very courteous.

I would like to say a "Big" Congrats to ALL the Guys that Won!! The SYC Display area looked GREAT!! Kinda SAD that I didn't bring a car to Represent the group-BUT-it was my wife's turn with her car. I want to Thank All the guys that did come over and see her car('94 Z-28 Modified), GOLD in the Bow Tie Class with we think a ( 995 ) don't know for sure until they send out the judging sheets. Caleb is going to draw her car also and can't wait to see that. Hope everyone made it home safe & sound.

Great cars, great guys.

Thanks, Tom for your help with Vettefest lining up the Auto-Spin and ALL you do for the sYc.

Thanks, Rick for taking care of my signs.

Thanks, Steve for allowing us to showcase the Inciner8tor on the Auto-Spin. I'm confident you'll have more fun with your cars spinning around on that new turntable! Thanks for your business.

Auto-Spin.com for anyone interested in seeing the turntable. How's that for subtle advertising?

I don't take cars to many shows, but might have to take a couple to this one next time......

In Tom's defense, the shot was taken just as he was checking tire clearance on the HR SS 454. This poor photographer just failed to get the car in the shot. Sorry for the grief you're taking Tom!

It seems like "Mid America Promotions" really dropped the ball on this one...I work in corporate promotions for a major motorsports group here in Arizona and I would be fired for trying to pull off what they did.

Number one, if you're going to have a car show, you then approach vendors who have something to offer that deals with cars...I.E. vendors who sell waxes, chamois, local area custom painters with examples of their work, pinstripers, detailers, and the list goes on and on...

Secondly, the name of the game is marketing what you're trying to "sell". That means print, radio, direct mail, and TV spots at a minimum(one to two months out). Plus hitting all the local car clubs, hang outs, cruises and other car shows with flyers a MINIMUM of 3 months out. There's a lot of leg work involved.

I can't imagine the rationale behind having a wig vendor at a car show, nor a beanie baby vendor, etc.

If the people who had the ladders and flagpoles(telescoping) were an older couple, who had a big bowl of candy in their booth...they're an awfully nice couple...Though they should be marketing their wares at home improvement shows!

I think that Mid America should have second thoughts about having "out of place" vendors next year.

Here in Phoenix, the Motor Trend Auto show is this weekend, and our company is exhibiting ten Harleys there! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yes, to us car guys and gals, if it is not car related, it does not belong. But, in the big picture, I would have to say yes, it does belong. Why you ask? 1. to pay the bills. With 1000s of shows being held each year, promoters are always looking for new ways to attract cars and spectators. 2. this year VF had a special Womens Showcase, for women car owners only, thus booths taylored for them. 3. to offer something for the spectators attending who are not into buying car stuff. For example my wife, who watched the flag pole/ladder demo and was quite impressed and who also bought several items from the women only, non-car related booths. And by the way, this is a good thing, as any one who is married and shows cars knows, keeping the Mrs. happy is a must. 4. once you start eliminating what you do not like, where does it end? No lead sleds, or pro-touring, or anything non-original? One of the ideas being kicked around is a show case for young car owners, which no doubt will attract booths taylored towards the younger crowd. Kind of leaves me out, but IMO, a good idea never the less.

As far as media advertising, even though some of the flyers arrived too late, I feel VF does do a good job of promoting the event, before and after. This includes TV, newspaper, flyers, brochures, etc. With the cost of advertsing what it is today and the wide range of publications read by the various car enthusiasts, promoting is a very risky, and expensive business.

All in all, VF is not perfect by no means, but I do feel is doing the best they can with what they have to work with. I had a great time (and the wife as well) and am looking forward to next year.

On the vendor issue Tom is right. Those of you who may think that Vettefest "dropped the ball" should go the the "ultimate automotive lifestyle event" the Barriett-Jackson collector car auction-any place it is held.

Scottsdale for example is clearly the big event with Lots and Lots of non car stuff for sale. The only differance is that the junk for sale costs really big dollars.

Vettefest is clearly the best all chevy event held indoors in the world, and the participation of the SYC has made it even better.

I was unable to get to this years event and enjoyed the photo's. The thread raised the question of the non car related vendors at the show. This seem's to be a growing trend at most events I attend. In the case of Vettefest I'm confident it is pure econonics. Chicago has long been the most expensive venue on the trade show circuit and Vettefest is probably no different. Space rented equals revenue and Mid-America is a business.

I know that Mid-America is trying to sell the 5 events they promote locally. So there maybe money concern's already. They have contacted Joe Beele the promoter of the "Skip's" shows to see if he had interest. The company that promotes the Jefferson swap meet is also being shopped for sale due to health issue's of the owner. I hear for a million or so it could be yours. The cost of the insurance alone could choke a company to bankrupcy, let alone all the other related costs. If the non-car related vendors help offset the cost and allow these events to continue we better get used to seeing these type of booths.
Happy Thanksgiving to all...

As always Vettefest was a great time. The SYC display was exceptional from Steve's 57 Chevy to the restored supercars and Rick's memorbilia display.
I didnt even get to see the whole show there always seemed to be someone else to talk to. This was the first time I was able to see Calebs work it was awesome.
At the beginning VF used to be known for its great swap meet its a shame every year its less of a swap meet and more of a car show. I am sure the swap meet brought a lot of revenue to the show for a 10x10 spot even 15 years ago it was 90.00 and you really needed 2 of them. So I guess the revenue has to be made up somewhere. We could all thank Ebay for the diminishing swap meets.
It was fun having Bill Wildt from Motorsport Unlimited tape a show on our group. If anyone would like a tape of the show let me know.

Bel-Air,
I have given some thought to a suburban event. Vettefest started at Arlington Park but they won't do inside cars anymore. The Village of Schaumburg is building a convention center/hotel at Meacham and the tollway. Maybe a group of facilities guys could become venture capitalist's/promoters.Wasn't there a small concert planned in a cornfield in upstate NY when our cars were new?
Hope all is well with you.

Bob, was interesting to watch the judges as they judged the cars at VF. With pens, pads and flashlights in hand, performing a thankless job. Ginnie's car is SCARY fast. Really winds up with the Pro charger. About 10 years ago we (three of us) were in it in on an open section of road - punched it and were up over 130 mph in no time flat.

There was a car up ahead, - about an 1/8 mile up as I recall. We closed on that car so fast I was sure that we were going to rear end it. The car really is that fast, and had the brakes that were needed to slow it down.
