View Full Version : 1969 Dana Chevrolet L88 427 Camaro

I bought this car and a 1969 cortez silver Z/28 at a estate auction in S. California long before anyone knew what 427 camaros were. I sold the Z 2 years ago but kept the 427. Here is my dilemma, all I have on the car (no paper work) is hear-say and jumbled information from the estate. I like a challenge but I have run out of time with this car. With the research done so far (Lawyers, mechanics, and estate) I can put the car in S. California all its life until I bought it.

The Camaro is a LOS version with limited info on the trim tag, no build sheet that I can find and a copy of the california title. The car is currently setup with an L88 short block (a version of the current L88 I am selling on eBay. see link NOS L88 427. (http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=82647&page=0&view=collaps ed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1)) and 1969 "840" heads, "163" intake and an 850 holley. Transmission in the car is a Richmond 5-speed with a 10" 4.10 posi. I have the orginal 12 bolt and 4 speed, both of which are toast. The car had one repaint in the late eighties. The original owner of the two camaros was a mechanic and drag racer and bought both camaros through the dealer in which he worked at, at that time, Dana Chevrolet. The estate says that the car was originally a 350 and 3 speed (SS-350 or LM1?) on the floor and the dealer did a 427 swap in the late sixties or early seventies. Soon after that the rear was destroyed (verified) and the four speed soon after (verified). What year did Richmond start making a 5-speed? Is there date codes on richmond transmissions? What I also have is a curved neck radiator (damaged) and the matching shroud as parts, but what is in the car is a gm aluminum short water pump, 21 inch 3 core radiator and all the big block accesories and brackets from a 1968. Obiviouly a small block heater core and such, but the fuel line is a single with no return, which is strange. Every thing else is original to the car (except the exhaust), interior, brakes, and, etc.

My bottom line is, what would a car like this be worth for selling purposes? Does any one remember this car? I really like this car (its good for at least 15 trophies a year at local shows and cruises) and the current way its setup, but need to move on to finish other projects (that have documentation!).

Gotta love Azure Turquoise, and from Dana to boot. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif Car looks great overall, but moving the grille bowtie down a notch is a simple 5 minute fix that would do it a world of good. When exactly did you take possession of the car? That center fuel gauge looks suspiciously like a reproduction, and a lack of Camaro emblems on the door panels raises an eyebrow too. I'm thinking it may have been refurbished more recently than you may have originally thought. Not taking anything away from the car though. The badges were replaced during the repaint in the eighties. Did I mention the car only has 67,000 miles on the clock. I have since fixed the bow tie, but because of where the were it was originally installed, it left a nasty mark on the grill. The door panels are original and the badges are in the door, you have to look harder. I notice right away after getting behind the wheel that the lens had been changed at sometime to center clock lens, but the fuel guage face is original. Not sure why the lense was changed.

If the swap was done as a new car and had paperwork, then the value would be significant. As a used car w/out any documentation, I think its value is that of any other nice non-original Camaro. While an interesting story from a well known dealer, I personally see little value enhancement by the later engine and trans swap. Nonetheless, it is a nice looking car.

[/ QUOTE ] My Dad had a very original (or at least it was when we found it) 69 Z/28 with the center mount fuel gauge and it too had a clock stem hole in the lens. I'm still not sure this isn't correct, as I assume the first center fuel gauge cars could have easily utilized the same lens as line workers had been installing over the optional clock for some time. What tipped me off as to questioning the authenticity of your center fuel gauge is the actual "FUEL" font on the face. It's awfully "square" as in to say each letter is nearly as wide as it is high. The first repos of these gauges featured such text, unlike the talller, thinner letters of an original. It's very difficult to tell in pics, and I've been wrong before, just thought it warranted a closer look. Any thoughts? Good luck with the car.

The car is currently for sale, http://www.cars-on-line.com/44846.html, and advertised as a COPO.
I have been contacted by some people who are looking at it. It highly unlikely to be a COPO. Especially since he states above that it came with a small block originally!
