Trunk Restoration

I have a 1968 Camaro with a very nice original trunk. While not perfect it is far too nice to respray it, especially since there is nothing available that really matchces the original factory finish. Any suggestions on what product to use to clean up the original?

Vacuum it out and leave it alone.

Its avalable now, Larry Christianson sells it. Ill have to get with our other shop to get his number. This product it so close you can blend with it on your original spatter, I have done it. The best thing is it repels water and wont peal like the spray bomb. Ill ty to post his info tomorrow.

The only trunk paint I have seen that looks right is whatever Supercar workshop does and I don't think they sell the paint.

I know how the SCW does it, but it takes quite a bit of practice and the right equipment. They are dead nuts on with theirs.

I tried it, didn't like the way I did it, and rattle-canned mine until I get better at it!

For two of my cars that I didn't want to repaint but had some surface rust and dirt, I scrubbed with a fine steel wool pad and hot soapy water, dried and vaccumed completely, then protected with BoeShield T-9 (http://www.boeshield.com).

If the dirt and rust doesn't go through to bare metal, I would recommend this procedure.

The most correct looking splatter paint I have seen is from John Berlage. He sells it by the qt. It is as close as I have seen in a single stage operation. Some of the restorers use several stages to get their effect. His # is 563-588-0536. He is also listed in hemmings

Yes the SCW trunk detail is excellent. I spoke to them at SCR about doing my trunk in my Yenko. The guy I listed above had not produced his stuff in a couple of years and there were no alternatives until he recently started producing it again.

Take a look at BBBenny's COPO trunk. SCW did it and it is perfect. Like an artist with the paint gun.

Is it Zolatone in the ebay auction?? That's what it is on my trunk and hard as rocks, no clear needed, factory correct looking Black and white.

We now carry John's trunk paint at our shop. It comes with complete instructions supplied by him. The stuff is nasty so you have to take precautions.

Rick H and whomever, I read the EBAY expired ad for the trunk paint.....Is anybody alledging that the SCW uses this same paint...OR is this Trunk thread talking about more than way to attain the SAME results?????
Anybody know when THE EBAY seller will again be selling more of there TRICK product.....

Honestly I have no idea where this thread is going. There are a couple people who claim to have the exact mix for the correct looking splatter paint. All a matter of opinion.
Personally I wouldn't use Zolatone (which some are using) because even if applied according to instructions looks incorrect. Just my opinion.
Never have seen SCW stuff so can not comment. We tried another individuals trunk paint because it was recommended and to be honest it didn't look right. We have used John's stuff and it looks very very correct.
Another thing I have noticed is that it takes the correct form of application to get the required look.

Not sure if the ebay auction will return. He seems new. I do know that his cost was reasonable.

Rick, I believe most of the correctness comes from the man with the spray gun. Its all in how you apply it. JMO

Rick how did you spray it???? I along with a bunch of people want to do it ourselves and get it right!!!...I remember as a kid we had da-shootz gun in the body shop and it had like a 1/4 or 3/8 nozzel looked like a reg spray gun but a funny nozzel..I dont know what the stuff was we shot but it was axactly correct and with the gun it kinda flung the stuff out of the gun around the trunk...you had to practice little with it as it came fast and would look like heck if you did not move right along with the gun...so is this another black box thing and no one really has a sure fire product besides the SCW..not offense BKH.

My name is John Berlage. I own a Butternut yellow 69 Yenko, as well as a 69 maroon copo. I faced the same problem everyone else is experiencing when it comes to finding a good trunk paint. A couple of years ago i spent year and a half looking for a good source. I stumbled upon and OEM supplier that produced the paint for GM. During my restoration of my yenko, before sandblasting the trunk, I sprayed some of the new paint over the old. I could not tell a difference. The paint in my opinion is the best you can get. I would like everyone to keep in mind that each GM plant did have variation in texture and look. For anyone who is skeptical please email me at [email protected] for pictures of my yenkos trunk.

I would also like to note, since it has come up on this discussion, how you apply the product is critical to how the paint looks. During my search I also discovered that GM used a very specific gun to spray the paint. They used a binks 2001 gun, with a 200 tip, a 66 fluid nozzle and a internal mix aircap.

I am confused. Is the stuff that Rick H is selling or the stuff from the ebay auction the thing to get? The one thing I do understand is that the BKH product is not for sale. I have one car with a resprayed trunk that I thought looked good until I picked up another car with an original trunk. Now the respray looks bad in comparison

The paint we use we make for each job. It took years to get it close. A lot of wasted paint. You have to use it as soon as you get it ready. Thats why it could not be sold. No other reason than that...BKH
