View Full Version : Untouched SYC Chevelle in Dec OLD CARS PRICE GUIDE

A friend of mine got his Dec '04 copy of Krause Publications' OLD CARS PRICE GUIDE. Looks like they're doing like Hemmings and adding features to sell more issues. Anyway, the front is loaded with features, including a pretty extensive pictorial on a LeMans Blue SYC Chevelle that was about to go into the restoration shop. The car is a low mileage untouched survivor, complete with smog and everything. Current owner is in Minnesota (sorry I can't remember his name) and its got a little too much edge to it so he's having RPM Restoration in Lino Lakes, MN do it up. At any rate, a lot of good reference pics for you Chevelle owners out there.
Speaking of Minnesota, RPM, and musclecars, also featured in the issue is a '69 M-code (440 4bbl) Dart GTS owned by Wayne Klemz and restored at RPM. This car has gotten a fair amount of ink lately, but what makes it special to me is that I'm about 90% sure that this is my uncle's old car. My family is from the same area, and when I contacted Mr. Klemz last summer, most of the info matched up (cut for fenderwell headers, lift off fiberglass hood, no tail stripe originally, etc). I also found out Mr. Klemz grew up a block from my Mom, and went to school with her and my Dad. Small world.

Some pics of the car were posted here a long while back. I remember it having the front fender 427 emblems filed to match the eyebrow moulding as was apparently somewhat customary for Yenko to do. Maybe some of you search fiends can track 'em down and link them here. Chad, got any other pics to post?

on the cut emblems
I think the reason for the cut edge on the Yenko 427 emblem found on some Y Chevelles has something to do with why some original pictures show Y Chevelles with the 1968 Yenko 427 emblem. Because of the curvature of the fender the bar under the 1969 emblem does not sit flush to fender and the edge sticks out. The 68 emblem fits better. When installing emblems I think some Yenko employees saw the edge of the 69 427 emblem bar sticking out so they cut an angle on it or used the 68 emblem.

JoeC, Which type of emblems does your car have on the front fenders? In some pics I have of 6 cars (Camaros and Chevelles) on the Yenko transporter being delivered to Colonial Chevrolet, you can see some cars with the 68 style emblems and some with the 69 style, so they seemed to have used either style interchangeably.

Tom,that is my car. it was finished about 2 weeks after the supercar reunion.The Clary's will be featuring my car as the november car of the month. I have seen the dart several times in person and it is a very nice car. Very interesting about the history of it.

Very cool, can't wait to see it. Chad, do you show your stuff at the Land O Lakes GTO Musclecar show? I keep meaning to make it back there for that, its a great show. (Plus my parents like any excuse for me to pack up a grandkid or two and head back to Minneapolis.)
If the Dart is found, that just leaves one family jewel left to find. My Mom's brother got home from Vietnam in 1971 and treated himself to a toy: a '70 GTO convertible, red/red 455/4sp with A/C. I remember many a ride with my Uncle to the Clark station on Highway 10 to get his KOOL cigarettes, watching that Hurst T-handle shifter on every shift.
Unfortunately, the car was pretty well used up by the time I lost track of it in the late '70's. The car had two Chevy Rally's on the back, to replace the the front Rally II's that were trashed when hitting a curb at 60 mph or so. By the time it left the family, it literally had gone through 5 or 6 engines (another 455 or two, some 400's, and a 389). And being a Minnesota car, rust was on the march as well.
Though I was very young, the 70's were a memorable decade. My uncle stayed in my Grandparents basement for a time, and I stayed there during the day while my parents worked. My Grandmother read my Uncle the riot act when she found her 4 year old grandson (me) over at the neighbor's, putting their grass clippings into a sandwich bag - a "gift" for his uncle who apparently collected such things....

JoeB, mine has the 1968 427 emblems and they are in my cars baby pictures. Appears that Yenko used both even late in 1969.

Tom,i am usually there every year and will probably have it there next year. There is also a guy that is at that show every year that has a 70 gto convert,455,ram air 3 or 4,red w/red interior. has been repainted in the past but needs a ground up resto.
