View Full Version : Space Saver Spare Application??

I pulled this spare out of an apartment building crawl-space we are re-habing...
Has a B.F. Goodrich "Space Saver Spare" tire on it, size C 78-14. Looks like a BFG sticker was attached over another sticker at some point.
I can't make out the letter code next to the valve stem (it wasn't stamped square).
The back side of rim is black.
I may "clean it up" if it is remotely correct for my 68.
Any ideas as to the original application??
More pics to follow.
thanks,

That looks more like a Mopar color on that rim to me. The # stamp near the valve stem that I can make out is larger than GM wheels I have.
Did you check it to see if it is a 4-1/2" or 4-3/4" bolt circle?

I don't think that valve stem was used in the early years.Looks to be a 70's vintage,my guess is Mopar or Ford.I have a correct mint 68 space saver that is gray in color and uses a std valve (i think,I'll see it again in the spring)..I also have a 78 space saver that has a valve almost like yours..

thanks Guys,
I figured somebody in the know could tell something from that valve stem, among other things.
I checked the lug holes and have 4 1/2 from center to center.
The rim looks the same as some plain 14x6's I have laying around from a 71 Malibu. If it comes down to it I guess I could mount the tire on one of them.
Steve, (question about the gray painted 68 rim you refer to)Is it the same color gray used on the 68 jack base?
I currently have a full size rally with a 1970 tiger-paw in the trunk. Not sure which I would prefer, as the spare was missing when I got the car, and the original owner didn't remember what it had.
I guess I have blinders on...when it comes to anything but GM and Chevrolet, as I never even considered that space savers came in fords or mopars http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif
