I need a mint black SS steering wheel for my project car and wondered if the '70 Chevelle wheel was used on any other cars? Thanks in advance http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

All of the cars in 1970 shared the Black Std. Steering wheel Part #3973004 in the year before & then after.Make sure you get the correct Horn shroud simulated madrid vinyl graining,& not the pebble.

Thanks Rick. Do you ever see NOS wheels like this on ebay?

Very rarely. You see more of the Colored wheels on Ebay NOS.
Usually you can watch a buyer win a colored NOS steering wheel,in the GM box on Ebay. Then switch the box for a clean Std. Black wheel he has on the side,& cover the colored wheel part# for resale..That's what I observe anyway.
I did see a Very good used one at Vettefest last month sell for $85.00 with the typical fracture from the expanding skelton. But I would have bought it as it was almost perfect besides that
Look for "SS" shroud emblem #3973852.
I must say when this wheel is done right,I think it blows the 3 spoke away in clarity & overall detail.
Just my .02.

Some (not all) 69 standard wheels have a pebble grain texture on the rim face itself... between the 2 grooves, running the entire circumference of the wheel. I have never seen a 70 wheel with this grain, and believe it was discontinued entirely by the 70 production year. As far as finding an NOS one on ebay, it is very rare. i have not seen any colored NOS ones on there either... These wheels were made is a wide array of colors in 69 and 70 to match virtually every interior combo avaialble, including oddball Impala interior colors, Monte Carlo, Malibu, etc. A 70 Chevelle SS would use a black one regardless of interior color, while a 70 Malibu or 300 Deluxe would have a color keyed wheel. These are my favorite GM steering wheels... I think I have one in just about every color.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the detailed responses. What does a super nice black wheel go for?

Can someone tell me where that part number is located on the wheel, do you have to remove it to see it?

The number is molded into the wheel on the hub area on the back... yes, you'd need to remove the wheel to see the number.

Thanks 370's...but there WAS one on Team Camaro this morning http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif TDW from this site emailed me first thing this morning and I bought it at 9 am. Turns out the guy lives 10 minutes from my office and was looking for a job, so he came by to fill out an application and dropped off the wheel - it's mint! Thanks again Tony! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Mr70, Yes, I saw both ads, what I was trying to say was that the wheel was no longer available...poor attempt at humor I guess http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I'm not 100% sure what else I need other than the distributor, fan shroud and smog system. Those are the only parts that are acutally "missing". I'm sure I'll need a ton of NOS stuff for the resto and I'll post that after I have the car inspected by someone just a little more knowledgeable than myself http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif If you have any NOS parts please feel free to drop me a PM or email, I'd appreciate it http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Thanks Rick. Can you PM me a price if it is NOS? Anyone know what NOS door weatherstrips are worth?

Yeah, That Tony is OK with me. He is one of the most helpful people that I have met on the Internet. If there's anything I can do for you Tony, just let me know http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

(# 0626-1914) I think this is the latest part number for a new GM big block shroud...I got it from GM just over 3 years ago, it may still be available.
I bought it as the front half for the BB 70-72 Monte (which without the "tunnel" added I was told was the same for Chevelle http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif )
If that number doesn't check out let me know, and I'll take a pic of the label on the shroud.

That's the later design,& only one being reproduced and was made to fit the 4 core Radiator originaly.
The #165 was specific to the 3 core BB radiator,in that it has a lip going into the core to meet flush. The #914 will work, but if the car has a 3 core Rad. you will see daylight where you shouldn't.Some of the #165 shrouds were shaved of this lip to fit the 4 core on the line, until they tooled up for the New #653 4 core shroud, which is what the #914 copies crudely today.

Mark

I didnt know you needed a steering wheel. I think I have a 1970 one, but I would have to compare it to the one on your car when it makes it here. I may have a NOS smog tube, do you know the GM part number?

Hey Mike,

Just spoke to the trucking company and they'll have it at your place before Christmas.

Don't sell any '70 Chevelle parts - I'll take them all! I'll give you a call next week. Keep your eye on the mailbox - something black and white is coming your way http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
