Within what time range would an appropriate build date be for an 837 alternator on an L78 Chevelle built the latter half of Jan 69. I've heard anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months prior to car build date.

Any of those dates should work, As long as its before the cars build date.

Another question on this..not to highjack your post but, where were the alternators/water pumps/distributors installed..assembly line or were they shipped with the motor.

Albert,
My understanding (at least the Tonowanda BB) were shipped long block, with valve covers, intake, water pump, lower crank pulley, distributor, exhaust manifolds, bellhousing and oil filter. Am I forgetting anything or adding too much. This is how I have seen them on pallets pre-delivery.

I would guess the alternators were put on the engines somewhere along the assembly line, but before the VIN stamping on the block, whenever that might have been.

That is my assumption due to the VIN stampings being moved from the front pad during the 69 production run. With the moving of the alternator from one side to the other from 1968 to 1969 it was necessary to move the alternator to put the VIN stamping on the front pad. It was quicker to start putting it on another part of the block.

Just a two cent opinion.
