First thing to note is that you will most likely NOT find a build sheet in a Norwood built Camaro.
As for some of the decoding - According to the cowl tag info, your interior (TR 711) is black standard, the exterior paint color (57 57) is Fathom Green top and bottom. Your body date is the 2nd week of October 1968 (thus no X code on the tag).
The rear axle numbers are for a 3:73 (BU) posi assembled on October 8.

Without paperwork, or original driveline, it's nearly impossible to prove it's a real Z/28. You will have to rely on detective work to "deduce" its origin. Do a search here, and Team Camaro (Camaros.net) to get a list of clues. BU rear is a start, as that was the standard rear on the Z. Of course, it was available on other models, too.

Pull the back of the back seat out and look on the X brace on passenger side and read the grease pencil code. Does it have the original radiator? (CB) code on the passenger side tank. How about your carb linkage is it correct? Should be 2 piece and have a bend in it. Single fuel line (3/8"). 7000rpm tach with a redline starting at 6000. Motor mounts on the frame should be #'s 507 and 508. Brake booster if original should be 9204. Metal bracket welded to drivers side rear frame rail (in the wheel well) for the dual exhaust hanger. Hope this gets you started. Sam

1 = Chevrolet
2 = Camaro
4 = 8-cylinder engine
37 = coupe body
9 = 1969 model year
N = Norwood, OH assembly plant
519306 = vehicle serial number sequence
Decode for body number: 126297
10B = Built the Second week of October.
69-12437 = Coupe.
NOR = Built in Norwood Ohio.
711 = Standard Black Bucket Seats.
57-57 = Car Color is Fathom Green
bu 100801 E
BU= 3.73:1 Posi
the E Under the date is for Eaton PositractionDifferential
Seems to be to many numbers in the date though. Check it again maybe 1008 G
Complete code should like like this BU1008G
E
If the 1008 is correct it would show a Oct 8th dating which would put it into the correct timeframe for your car

Nice tip on pulling the back seat Sam. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Depending on if you have style trim or not. I would expect to see one of the following there. DG3, DG7, X3, X7. It's an early car. I'll bet it is there unless someone was monkeying around with paint back there.
Kris you can send the pictures to me I will get them posted for you.

I got a nice batch of pic from Sam a while ago. It has to be one of my favorite Zs. Ralley sport, semi day 2d. She looks like she's right off the street in 69, or 70. I'd share, but have been unable to do pics since my last computer crash.
Someone remind me how, and when power steering became available on Zs. I can't remember how that shook out. Schonye

Kris with the hood open go to the drivers side of the car by your outside mirror. Look at the back of the booster at the top there is a tab that should have the number stamped on it.
I don't know the motor mount numbers off the top of my head but everything else seems to be matching up.
Don't bother looking for a build sheet Norwood cars don't have them. Keep the money though. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Sure looks like a legit RS/Z28 and the X3 helps. Are you going to put it back to stock condition with original color?
Racefan
12-21-2004, 05:56 PM
Darren-
Forgive my ignorance, but what do the other codes (besides the X3) represent? Is there a place where all these hints are written down? I have a Norwood 68 that was just a 327 car, but don't know what other options it had. Is there a way to tell? I know it had a console, the holes are there. What else can I find out by marks on the body and such?
DarrenX33
12-21-2004, 06:13 PM
Cars that didn't have trim tag X codes like early Norwood cars and VN cars usually always have this marking. The theory is that someone marked it there to let the line workers know what the car is when it goes down the line. I have seen a combination of X and then the single number 1-7 (X11,X22,X33 and etc) to identify the car. I have also seen where the X is omitted and the color was abbreviated. For instance Sam's Z has DG3. His car is a style trim Z that is Fathom Green (DG = Dark Green). I also have a picture of markings in the same spot on a base car that is Garnet Red. Care to guess what the marking is? Yep. R1.
Kris' car is Fathom Green that is why I suspected that there could be a DG in there somewhere. But in his case the worker put X3.
Markings have shown up on the firewall. We just had a thread where after mediablasting all the codes were revealed. Here! (http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board=UBB10&Number=103783&page= 2&fpart=1)
These hints on the X codes are obviously unique to 69 Camaros. I am not sure what might be there for 68s.
Racefan
12-21-2004, 06:17 PM
Very cool. Is there anything to help us with the impossible to document 68s? A lot of people have suggested the best way to document a 68 is to never purchase one without tons of paperwork. I guess that is why the majority of the market never really moves on the 68s like the 67s or 69s.

Im going to build it back to original stock condition,i never really liked green,but the picture of that green z,in the earlier post looks great,and i would like to buld it all stock.when i bought it,over a year ago it was sitting in mississippi,my buddies and my wife thought i really lost it,being from alaska they asked how you gonna get it home,no motor,i told them i would tow it,well i few days later,my buddie that thought i was nuts for buying the mississippi z,told me he had just bought a 2002 ford passenger van on ebay for his lodge,and it was sitting in dallas texas,he then says i have a propisistion, fly to dallas pickup my new van, pay for my fuel and go get the car deliver the van to seattle,i tlod him we had a deal,so instead of me just going alone,my original plan was to fly to mississippi buy a early 90s chevy truck,a new car trailer,and tow it back to seattle,then ship it to alaska.I brought the whole family,a vcr 12 volt tv for the kids,it turned out to be one of the funnest trips we have ever done,and got to see a bunch of the country,and met a bunch of great people,we would do it again in a heart beat,so with that said ,i must get ready for work,merry xmas to every buddie,and thank you for the help.....kris

You have to look at the booster from behind. Usually easy when the hood is open you can look thru the crack between the hood and cowl panel. It should be stamped on a pad at the top of the booster.

Welcome Dan. Please post some pictures if you can.
FYI- A rally sport grille should be black unless it was on a black car. Example (http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/90865/an/0/page/1#90865)

The area on the grill I am talking about is on the outer edge around the head lights. you are correct about the center being black.
DarrenX33
12-23-2004, 09:57 PM
The outer part of the grille was never black execpt in the case of a black car. If it was it is a sign of an unpainted replacement grille which is actually pretty common.
Salvatore

Darren is right about the grille. It was replaced and never painted. My car is (11D) 547 is right before yours, no X code. R/S-Z/28.
