I thought I would share my good fortune and encourage others. I just got home with Yenko Chevelle #408293 (Marv Minneman Youngstown, Ohio)Hugger Orange Auto. acquired from owner since 1979 not far from my home, just 30 miles north of Pittsburgh. I followed up on a remote lead I worked on over 14 years ago when I first finished my Butternut Yellow car. The lead went stone dead long ago but I always sensed this car did exist because I had just enough info that made it sound real. I never forgot it, just didn't know what else to do to find this elusive car. My interest heightened when I had my two Yenkos at the GM Carlisle show and a fellow from the Pittsburgh area asked me all about my Chevelle and inquired about me doing some restoration work on a friends ORANGE SYC CHEVELLE parked long ago. And so I started over and with nothing more than trying a different spelling of the name I had 14 years ago, I was talking to the 26 year owner of this spectacular car. Awesome 90% original paint, mint interior, 26,000 miles, 1977 Pennsylvania registration and inspection sticker. KQ rear, CX trans, replaced block but right heads and most other componentry. Motor & Trans out of car but that's it. Overall killer car and an easy deal to purchase from a super nice guy. I will try to post pictures later as I know you will be asking. Keep up the hunt !!!!!

No, not the Oil City car as I too know a little about that one. This car left Youngstown about '73-4, went to Mercer, PA, sold to my guy in the Grove City area in '79 and NEVER left his garage til I showed up. His very clear paperwork and PA. state inspection verify he enjoyed this car a total of 42 miles in 26 years of ownership. I am in the process of tracking original owner in Youngstown, Ohio. It seems this car never ventured over 50 miles from selling dealer to any subsequent owner. Pictures soon I promise. THANK YOU for all the kind words.

The more I look at the car I am amazed how good the paint, striping, vinyl top, interior, exterior trim and glass is for a 35+ year old car. I already have a few friends that have threatened bodily harm if I tear this car apart. For now I am looking at doing the drivetrain/chassis and maintaining the car as-is. Comments????? Nothing going on immediately as I am deep into a COPO Chevelle project.

George,
You consider buying any lottery tickets recently? Play the six digit VIN any way you can. I have a friend in SE Michigan who remembers racing a orange 69 Yenko Chevelle against his HEMI DART (which he still has)at Milan Michigan dragway in the early to mid seventies. Says he will box hunt for a possible photo. Anyone know how many Orange 69 Y Chevelles that were within a 500 mile radius of Milan back then? For the Mopar or dart guys, you may know Knorbert K. What a great find, no doubt a lot of hours of research and dedication. Nice to see those who throw more at the hobby then money. How many years knowing of it before finding it? Dont touch the originality any more then you have to. This is the kind of car that you have no need of defending or arguing it's heritige or history, no concerns about questionable documentation with this one, the car screams original! Very few found anymore in what I call "Time Capsule" condition. Did the previous owner tell you how many people have tried to buy it over the years? I cant imagine anyone even knowing of it or laying eyes on it in the last quarter century without that knowledge leaking out to the point of someone already bringing back into the daylight! Then again, this is one of those cars that if it were seen and described to anyone else as even existing, it becomes a "Ya right, sure you saw it, uh-huh". I can tell you, that happens a lot. People may have seen this car over the years and never even bothered with telling anyone about it as they were tired of the skeptics of the world believing it not possible for a find like this to be out there, let alone discovered. Congrats!

Well Motown, you certainly have my interest. Milan would have been a likely drag strip for this car to have run. As for Orange Yenkos, it looks like Minneman in Youngstown actually sold 2 twin cars and no others in the area show up but remember, we are only talking about 100 or so miles from Canonsburg so anything is possible. As to your questions about the cars hibernation, in extensive conversation with the 26 year owner it seems the car was just never out anywhere, he was out of the hobby, lived off the beaten path and never tried to do anthing with the car for over two decades. As I said previously, a buddy of his goes to GM Carlisle and supposedly tried asking around but it seems I am the only one that smelled blood when I heard the cars description and "just north of Pittsburgh" mathched up to this long ago dead-end lead I had. Once I found the guy by phone and he learned why I was calling, he gave me the cars VIN in about the first minute of our conversation. One of the nicest, honest, genuine gentleman I ever dealt with. In the first ten minute phone call I established 1. VIN was a hit. 2. Cars description matched registry. 3. "of course you can see it, come down anytime" 4. "Ya, I'd probably sell it" From there it sorta went like this: Did you ever see the Sienfeld where Jerry calls Kramer to see if he wants in on the Chinese food order and he doesn't even have the phone hung up and Kramer is sliding in the door ? I think I was at this guys house about that fast. From there it was easy, looked over the car, established a relationship, and worked thru a very friendly price negotiation. Total elapsed time from first phone call to title tranfer.....3 weeks. Total nights of sleep over those 3 weeks-none. It was great......where's the next cold case to chase?

Pretty close, needed some therapy to get me thru the 21 days so I confided in my one buddy (coincidently the guy I bought my first Yenko from) in Kentucky who I knew would help me thru and he did. If I didn't get the car bought, I was thinking of giving out the location on this site and just sit back in that little town and watch the traffic jamb. George,
It sounds like this guys buddy was looked at by collectors as telling the story of "The old lady who has the no miles Corvette in her barn that belonged to her son who was killed in Viet-Nam and she wants $200 for the car...." The buddy no doubt knows car guys if he was at Carlisle, a national event which is very close to ground zero Yenko, so in 26 years you were the first to actually listen to his "Lost Yenko tale"? I am surprised this "Urban Legend" was even told to you. After how ever many years the buddy knew of the car, certainly you were unlikely to be the first he told, and with as easy as the negotiations were with the owner to purchase the car it is amazing the buddy did not give up at even telling the story, without a doubt over how ever many years and miles their friendship took them it would be a betting fact that others were told of the lost hidden original Yenko that could be bought, only to recieve the "Ya, uh huh, sure pal" sneer of the skeptics. Considering that, at what point would the buddy give up at being looked at as the attention starved person standing on a corner handing out maps to the "Lost Dutchmans" gold mine. What knocks me off my square about this one is the fact that it could be bought. If it were not for sale no matter what, then sitting all that time would re-classify it from lost/missing to known about but may as well be lost because money cant touch it, much like the Wisconson Yenko Camaro. A very similar yet different situation was the 68 Trans Am #2 Shelby Mustang I aquired not long ago, bought in 69 from Ford by a Team Shelby employee. I pried that car from a dark corner in a warehouse that was it's home since 69, over 30 years of a one of three car in which both owner and car were known of to the point of both being listed in the Shelby Registry, yet over the years both owner and car had become lost/missing. It was just NOT FOR SALE at any price. The owner would not even admit to still having, let alone discussing the sale of the car. Over the years many had gone to great lengths trying to seperate the car from the owner with no success to the point that many believed the car to no longer exist. That type of "Time Capsule" situation would account for a extremely desirable car to sit for 26 or more years, but for a car such as the Yenko to be announced for sale in the first phone encounter is absolutely incredible! I would venture the statement that a whole lot of people were asleep at the wheel on this one, which most likely stems from the too easy, too good to be true overconfidence we all suffer from on occasion. What I sometimes refer to as a "Momentary Lapse Of Reason". I am surprised that the friend did not try to or buy the car himself. At any rate George, I will follow up on a possible Milan photograph, that could possibly prove as or more elusive as the car itself. Considering the way the Yenko cars launch from the hole, if a front shot can be located from the car leaving the lights I am sure many here would agree that the front would be high enough in the air to possibly identify the chrome sway bar. Once aqain, congrats on a unbelievable find, I am sure it was enough to wake up many of the hunters from the lazy mode!

Since this post seems to have more attention than I ever dreamed, I guess I will share another very interesting tidbit about this car. As I previously disclosed, orig motor long gone but a 1969 512 4bolt was the motor I got and the one he stated was in the car at his purchase. How about this............Covette VIN, LU code, 427-435 L89 Aluminum Head, Dual-disc clutch. One of 102 in 1969. I am presently looking to see if I can find the car (please don't hate me) but if no luck I am going to publish the VIN to see if I can reunite this incredible rare motor that belongs in some Corvette if the car still exists. OK you Youngstown guys, there's some more sleuthing for you to do. If you were into Corvettes back then you would have to have noticed this car. I'd give anything to find out how that motor made its way into this Chevelle. Gotta be a great story.

I'll go out on a limb here, but I would wager that soon there will be a Corvette with all matching #'s but missing just the motor. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/haha.gif

Joe, you are 100% correct, it just dosent get any better then this Yenko find, I would be willing to bet everyone here is Super Happy for George and his Super Find! George, you are killin me with the Corvette engine find, it would be a wonderful thing if the car is still out there and you could mate the original engine back to the car to make it matching numbers again, no matter who ends up owning it. You must be doing something right in your life as it seems good Karma is coming at you no matter which way you turn. Four Scenairios come to mind as how the engine got seperated from the Corvette:
1) Was at some point made into a race car and a completely different Hi Perf engine replaced the possibly worn or lower HP original.
2) The gas crunch with rising costs in the early seventies saw a small block make it's way into replacing the thirsty premium eating L89.
3) The car at some point was totaled(God Forbid)and the engine was salvaged.
4) The car at some point was stolen(God Forbid)and the engine was sold.
Hopefully it is one of the first two or another scenairio which leaves the car still in existence soon to be remarried after a long divorce. If the car doesnt surface at least you have one heck of an engine which through common law marriage has become part of the Yenko in lieu of the original. Jim Mattison or some of his Corvette Guru's may be able to shed some light on the missing Corvette. Good Job George!

I have a little more info on the early history of this car and I thought maybe this would stir a memory that could lead me deeper. Second owner/owners of this HO sYc Chevelle, Blk top/stripes, auto, were some sort of partners out of Mercer,Pa. who drag raced the car, stock appearing except for centerline styled alum wheels, ladder bars, summer bros axles with long studs, possibly a different hood with scoop (unsure on this item), estimated years 1974-1977. These partners may have had a garage or body shop business. Anybody western PA or Youngstown, Ohio lend more info to this search ? Thank You !

Kevin,Mike The Magazine article is all wrong on My old Z28. I told Kevin that before and there is no proof of the car being built by jenkins! When I talked to him after I bought it,He mentioned that he and his kid rebuilt the engine in 72 after they blew it at atco. He never once said anything about jenkins building the car! He said the never had a chance to run it again. Then it sat for 15 years and the wife sold it to Harry Lutz,A local racer who was going to tub it and put in a automatic! He didnt have the heart and put it in a local trader mag and I bought it from him. I rebuilt the whole car from top to bottom and I made that car what it is today! And when the article says the motor hasnt been apart in years and nobody knows what in it is a joke.I built the engine in the car not jenkins. I know every part thats in it. One thing they got right is it is a running son of a bitch. Im sorry I sold it. Mike Wilkenson [aka dajudge]who I sold the car to is going to post the pics I gave him of me restoring the car. Tune In! I hope nobody gets upset over this but the truth should be known. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/scholar.gifKevin,If you want the pics I have I will make copys for you if you ever need them. I dont believe anything mags say about cars anymore after the article.

Uh.. OK, you guys are talking about this car from the cover of MCR and posted about in SYC Members in Print (http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/110139/page/1/fpart/3/vc/1) on the third page?
I just let my Super Chevy mag subscription run out, since it wasn't doing much for me any more and I mainly hunt and pic for good car mags at the stores anyway. That car and story were neat, but it's all crap?

Maybe I should dump HR and wait for you guys to screen the others mags every month before I even look at them.
Great, Now I'm having flashbacks of '75 Z28s for sale in the swapsheet and a could have been movie about a Shelby Nova! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsdown.gif

I dont want everyone to think its all crap! The car is a real 3600 mile car. Its just not as unrestored as it lets you think. I took the whole car apart and replaced or restored all the pieces to make it correct. The strickler -jenkins thing is another story. I dont belive any of that is true.

okay...is there a link anywhere to the MCR article or can anyone scan and post it.
I know Harry Lutz and remember the car...never quite understood him selling it http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif
I think his wife races a 20-30k mile 73 Z now, unless he's sold it too.
Great car!

So the 60K question is where did the strickler -jenkins story come from ? Don..Who built the engine in 72 ?

Mossport Muscle Car Review does not own these cars and make up the stories, the current owners give them the info.
Moderators, this subject HAS to be gotten to the bottom of. Maybe so we don't RUIN George Lyons GOOD thread we can move the posts associated to this mess to a new thread. I am sure that this topic is going to get legnthy.

Yeah, good point. -Move all of this talk to it's own thread.
Well, that Z is a great car and probably does run like stink as we're told. So, it really is a low mile car that needed..what? -a few soft parts, correct details, clean-up and detailed throughout? More? As said above, how did this told history get in the mix and what is the cars background? Was it just a nice car that was locked-up for a long time or an early modified runner or...?

So the 60K question is where did the strickler -jenkins story come from ?
[/ QUOTE ]
Charley, that story came directly from the original owner in a phone interview with Geoff Stunkard. So s far as the article goes it is all true. The car still sported its original paint, interior, and trunk but the engine compartment and under carriage had been cleaned and detailed. That still did not detract from the original low miles and how neat of a car it is.

Frank, there are a lot of liars and scam artists out there but you do not know the story behind this car. It is only hearsay. Nobody "spun" the story around to make it sound better or to increase the value of the car. Are you willing to tell the original owner who spoke to the author of the article that he is a liar? If so, can you substantiate that claim other than what Don states? Everyone now knows that Don did not sell an unrestored 70-1/2 Z28, and neither did the next guy. But for all intents and purposes the car has an unrestored interior, paint, (other than some resprayed lower 1/4's and why would you do that on a car that only has 3600 miles, maybe burnout "rash" from drag racing?), and original unrestored trunk. I do not know what the previous owner told the current owner when it was sold but if he relayed the same information as to what was in the article then to me the lies stopped at that point. I know I haven't kept anything secret as to what has been done to the car. Hell the article even mentioned that we got caught in a down pour! I couldn't hide that from Pat http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif.........
I agree that this topic from Mikes post on needs to be moved as it could get longer, maybe.......RatPack.......
