View Full Version : 1970 chevelle muncie shifter
The GM assembly manual shows that for my L78 bench seat car
with no council a shifter handle # 3973864 #1437 for first gear rod #9192 for 3rd and 4th and 1438 for reverse.
The 3973864 handle is a bench seat handle. Were bucket seat cars with no councils equiped with bench seat shifters or
could both bench seat shifter and or council shifters be installed from the factory ?

I used to own a Cortez/blk 70 L34 buckets/no console car that must have been 100% original (bought it out of a southern CA backyard) and it had a bucket seat Muncie handle. Wish I had more "conclusive" evidence!

I would tend to agree with Scuncio, I too have had a couple of Chevelles one bench seat 4 spd. and one bucket seat 4 spd no console. The bucket seat car had the shifter without the forward slant to it.

Can you post a pic of the shifter? I have a 69 SS chevelle with the original shifter. Bucket seat non console. It has no forward bend.

They only used the Bench seat handle and console handle. My Brothers LS-6 buckets seat no console has the Orig. Console handle still in the car. This is NOT the ONLY car that I based this info on.I hope this helps.

Thanks for your information, I am away on vaccation and cant post the pic of the shifter handle. The shifter that the assemlby manual lists is # 3973864 is a bench seat shifter handle and it has a large curve on the handle. The council shifter handle is a different number and it is almost straight with verry little curve. What you seem to be telling me is that the bucket seat 1970 chevelles with no
coucil came with a council shifter (the no curve or straight handle) and not the bench seat shifter????
GM made the muncie shifters for many applications and years
of models. I beleive that Only the 1970 Chevelle and other 1970 cars had
the part numbers stamped on the shifter handles. The other
rod numbers " 1437 "9192 "1438 are numbers for the 70 chevelle. These numbers match the gm manual. GM I think in 1969 chevelles and other models did not have numbers stamped on the shifter handle. I guess it would be nice
to get an opinnion from a unmolested 70 chevelle bucket seat
no council member http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
