In the attached picture the ball joint on the left is an nos upper ball joint for my '70 ls6,it perfectly matches the original ones that I just removed from my car.The one on the right is also an nos upper ball joint, part# 3848048 grp 6.164,according to my GM dealer this is supposed to be the same ball joint as my original ones, however as you can see it is not.The main issue is the rivet holes on the one on the right are bigger than my nos unit and I don't think that my 1/4" rivets would hold them tightly. There are several of these nos units on e-bay,they all give the same part # and say that they are for a '70 Chevelle. Has anyone seen this before, or did GM use different size rivets??

even though they are GM,...could it be that the replacements were intended to be nut and bolted?

I don't know, but can't believe that I am the only one having this problem.Especially with all of the people on this site that use rivets to secure the ball joints.

The ball joints from PST look like yours on the right, but they use 5/16" hardened gr. 8 bolts--

Are you sure those holes were'nt opened up by someone, even though NOS ,they look like they're right on the inner ridge--------BLEMS??

NOS replacements maybe ? I can't see a service department re-riveting a balljoint on when they could chisel, bolt and get it out the door. Service replacements I would think should be bolt on.

I agree Bob--But it just seems odd that the holes are so big--the heads of the bolts would be larger also--just doesn't look right-----What we need is someone who's familiar with holes-----Rick(Mr70)?---
