View Full Version : 427 TJ's Butternut Beauty....

History: The car was built at Van Nuys during the third week of March, 1967. It was sold new at Alan Gwynn Chevrolet, 1400 S. Brand in Glendale, California on May 12, 1967 to a Mr. Thomas R. Craig of 131 N. Isabel, Glendale. Mr. Craig drove the car daily around Southern California until 1986. From what I have been able to determine I am the fourth owner. The car’s original black CA license plate number was VDA 033. The black plates I have now, UYJ 760, are 1967-issue with 1967, ‘68, and ’69 stickers.

Changes from stock: The car originally had 707Z Yellow Custom Bucket seat interior. I bought the car with the yellow seats, side, and door panels still in place but the carpet, headliner, and dash had been changed from the original gold (yes, gold) to black. Because the stock yellow and gold interior was both hideous-looking and not available from the aftermarket, I completed the conversion to a correct-appearing 765-style Black Custom Bucket interior. It looks much better now! The black vinyl top was replaced by a previous owner. The car has a very old dual-turbo exhaust with stock-located tailpipes. I’d bet the exhaust was put on the car at least 30-35 years ago. The factory California emissions equipment was removed long ago and the pipe plugs in the exhaust manifolds will probably never come out. The paint looks mostly original but the car had the right-front fender replaced in the 1960s and there is evidence of paint touch-up. The car is otherwise unrestored, door dings and all.

Trim Tag:

03C: Third week of March
67-12637: 1967 Sport Coupe with Custom Interior
707Z: Yellow Custom Bucket Seats
Y-2: Butternut Yellow lower body, black vinyl top
1E: Tinted Glass, all windows
2MG: Th-400 transmission, Center Console
3SL: Z23 Interior Décor Package, Z22 Rally Sport Package
4N: Super Sport 396/325hp
5Y: Deluxe Seat Belts

Other Details: The engine is the original MZ-coded block, which denotes California L35/M40 automatic with Air Injection Reactor (smog) and PCV. The 12-bolt rear is coded BJ, which has been confirmed by the Camaro Research Group as being the original 3:07 non-Positraction installation and the BJ code shows on the PoP imprint on page 46 of the original Owner Protection Plan booklet. The car has the factory round traction bar. The car also has the optional B93 Door Edge Guards, J65 Metallic Drum Brakes (power-assisted), N33 Comfortilt Steering Column, U17 tach and gauges. I added the N96 optional mag-style wheel covers and a set of FC 14x6 wheels. I powder-coated the wheels black. The tires are Coker F70x14.

Future Plans: I go back and forth on whether to go to a “Day 2” look that wouldn’t alter the car in such a way that it couldn’t be put back to stock. In reality, I’ll probably leave it as-is.

Bill,

Cool car! 1967 Camaros are so http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif. I'm kinda partial to this model, as you can well imagine!

I think you ought to put front AND rear spoilers on your Camaro! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/haha.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/haha.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/haha.gifJust kidding!

Leave your car the way it is! Have you completed your brake work yet? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Again...you have a very http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif car!

Thanks Belair for posting the pics....late! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I too would leave it the way it is, but this is coming from a guy who likes his cars 100% original. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

You guys are the greatest and thanks for all the compliments. (Budnate---I laughed when I saw that spoiler pic.) Again, the car looks great in the pics but in person it shows almost all of its 38 years. Someone mentioned Cragars and traction bars---believe me, it's difficult not to 'play' with this car. I have a set of original '60s American Torque Thrusts (14x6) that I had professionally restored and I'm toying with the idea of swapping the Coker redlines on for an easy Day 2 look. If you look at Kevin Suydam's orange '68 Dana you'll see the same wheels and redlines. I love that look. Rest assured guys, the more I read "leave it alone" the more I am convinced to do just that. Thanks again everybody!

Hey Sam, we need to "wow" these guys with a picture of our '67s parked together. SS/RS's, N96's, F70 redlines, and the color contrasts would make for a killer photo.

Yeah, my girl's been well-used in her 38 years but she still looks pretty damn good.

Since it's an original California car (SoCal) and I am from the SF bay area I had to have these Doug Dicker frames I found on eBay. "Does the little lady need a new car? Then bring her in and we'll Dicker!" San Rafael is in Marin County just north of San Francisco.

BY grew on me after a while owning the car. The black VT, striping (bee and pin) and rear panel help create a nice looking combo. Once I got the F70 Cokers, FC wheels and N96 covers the beauty of the car's color combo really popped out at me.

Perfect crystal-clear chilly fall day yesterday (Sunday) so I got'er out for a 50-plus mile, mostly freeway run. Still had 3/4-tank of Trick pump 101 from the last time I drove it so off I went! Flat spots on the Cokers went away and once she was steady at operating temp I settled in to an enjoyable 65-mph run. It was nice to get out before noon with the orange and yellow leaves bright in the sunshine! Boomed down to Tacoma, off and under the freeway and back on in the opposite direction toward Seattle with a nice long 2nd gear into-the-secondaries pull up the merge lane, 5500 rpm and a nice (faint) carbon trail out back. (Suck it tree huggers.) Back up toward Seattle at 65-70 in the right lane most of the way--let the rat-racers have the left lanes. Off and under and back on southbound toward home. A swing around Brown's Point (nice 2-lane 35-40 mph posted drive) and back to the house. One hour and twenty minutes of pure joy. It will sit in the garage for too long and then when I get it out for a good run I remember how much fun it is to drive.

Swear to God Ken, I intentionally left my digi-camera home. I just wanted to go drive and not feel the need to suddenly pull-over to take a picture. Then, while on one of my favorite winding 2-lane drives I see a swath of huge, beautiful trees, all orange with their leaves turning and the sun on them and I thought it would make a great over-the-hood-at-speed picture. If the sun's out next weekend I'll go snap those trees!

Sold my '55 and used some of the proceeds to have a 'refresh' done on the Camaro. New underpinnings front and rear, lower, Global West multi-leafs in back (1.25" lower), new 1' lower coils in front (slightly higher rate to match the leafs), Gardner "deep tone" exhaust (sounds great for a stock 396/325), Pertronix Igniter/recurve (by a pro on a Sun machine) and a full tune, front drum brakes fussed over so it now stops dead-straight, new trans seals and mount (cracked), new u-joints (bearings were dust), even got the horn working! I still had the horn button from my high school '67 Camaro (1979) so I popped that on there. It drives like a new car. Idles smoothly, low mild rumble, shifts smooth, nice and firm--not too firm--ride, excellent throttle response (for a 100K-plus mile L35). I wanted it lower and level and I think we achieved that. Now I can drive the heck out of it at a moment's notice and honk the horn all I want! Want to feel what a nice, tight, stock '67 L35 Camaro feels like? Stop by and I'll toss you the keys! My happy machine is doing its job! Happy to write the check for that. Engine/trans/diff upgrade is the winter project. (Putting the stock MZ engine and original Th-400 under the bench. It will still look stock when done but go through F70 Cokers at a higher rate...)

PS: Yes, I kept ALL of the stuff that came off the car. Coils still had the tags on them, leafs didn't.

Since my car has what I call an "Impala driveline" (396/325, Th400, open 12-bolt) I decided to put a set of wire wheelcovers on it. One of the original ads referred to the RS as the "country club Camaro" and the wires help in that regard! Dare to be different.

Yep, I chose to sell the Rally/Disc Brake wheels that came on the car and get it back to an original-appearing setup. The N96 "mag" wheelcovers and redlines remind me of my Hot Wheels cars of old and are a refreshing change from all the Rally-wheeled cars. I even restored a set of accessory wire wheelcovers for an even more unusual (yet still correct) look.

More fun with the old dog. In 1980 I bought a NOS-in-boxes set of 1967 PO1 base wheelcovers for my high school '67. Ran them with the stock wheels and a set of Dunlop GT Qualifiers. I was down in California two weeks ago for the Porsche Rennsport Reunion at Monterey and stopped by a buddy's house in Sacramento on the way home. He said he had something to show me out in the garage and he produced my old PO1 wheelcovers! When I went into the USAF in the '80s I had him store some stuff for me until I could come get it and the PO1s got forgotten over the decades. So I brought them home and washed them off--still cherry--and snapped them on last weekend. Boy do they look right! All the ads in '67 (but for the disc cars) had the PO1s shown, so I am loving the look of my Camaro now.

Stupid Photobucket. I'm not paying 400 bucks a year for them to host photos.

Take that Photobucket:

I get bored and start restoring wheelcovers. N96s are a great look.

Ditto!
If you Google Image search this topic or others, some Photo#ucket pics no longer appearing in threads still show on previews but w/ less clarity.
Below shot heading to the Old Drag pics thread, close but no X-flag emblems.

You can also click on the "please update..." image and it'll take you to photophuckit as long as the image is public. At least I could on my phone. Now on a pc at work and its hit and miss.

That BY RS/SS looks a bit dechromed. Probably wanted to hide the engine designation!

427TJ,

My name's Eric. I'm not a frequent poster (70 hrs/wk at work), however I really wanted to check out your Butternut '67. I remember them new, back when there were NO Camaros around, meaning zero privacy in public. Parking ours next to a new '67 Mustang made the Ford look like an over-decorated wedding cake... where Ford Styling tacked on at least one thing from every aisle at Pep Boys.

I was shocked when Photo*uckit tried to hold me up for money to view your pix. I've had a PB account for over a decade. Sayonara idiots. I won't give in to extortion.

At least I did get to see the last couple of your pix. Very nice car ! A nice survivor from a time when a 2-1/4" exhaust was considered big, and a Saturn V was considered every-day usual.

Eric

Thanks Eric, but it's not a survivor by current standards. It is merely a car that has survived the ravages of time! It also avoided being cut-up and modified and has been stock since Day One which is why I bought it. The engine is in need of rebuilding but still provides plenty of driving enjoyment. New radial Coker Firestones are on the short list of things to do.
