met a nice guy today..here is his fresh from the barn Corvair...story goes like this...car was built in 70 here in Wa by a Engineer and drove daily for years then just a fun car then sat for the last 13 years..nice clean install with a kit they sold back then..it has the cool fiberglass molded part for the buckets to set in there is a piece that snaps on behind it and goes to the back window..for a 1970 kit it looks really well built, forgot to snap a pic under the front hood..big ol 3 core there with two Fridge fans for cooling..and no bs it looks real clean and they keep the car cool..only thing he says he has to remember to shut them off on the freeway as the wind spins them to fast...check it out..he says when ya hit it hard it plants the rear down tight to the ground and flat out goes like stink..he is still getting used to the car but the previous owner/builder took him for a ride when he bought it and he is still talking about it....lol

Hey Bud...cool car...I think Crown made conversion kits real popular back then...there are still a very hardcore group of Corvair people out there and some very very good part sources..I still have some NOS Corvair parts including a dash clock...I can't remember the name of the parts place out east..I think in new England...I had a really cool Vair a few years ago, a turbo Spyder from Cal in my favorite 62 color...this V 8 must be scary

Joe not really...the kit was so easy.. its a bolt in of quality 2X4 boxed steel..a sb with bellhousing bolts right to a 65 and later trans stock! its got a saginaw trans same strength as our full size cars from the 60's, which is really a pretty tough trans ...I want one sooooooooo bad!! somebody stop me if I run across a clean no rust 65 and later car...OH BABY!! poor mans Pantera with a
real LT-1 in it..no kidding looks like a guy could do one in a long weekend.

Pretty close.. but the kit in this car was built is the way I would do it ... it had a hyd slauve mounted on a 1/2 piece of aluminum plate "bolt on piece" and it ran the factory clutch fork..so all the clutch stuff was stock GM pieces simple but solid. I will take better pics the next time I see the car..it was a realy well built car.

it was made from the tempest 2 speed powerglide, they added a 2 speed planatary to the back side of the diff to make it a 4 speed auto. They tried it with a fluid coupling and did not work well so they adaped a clutch behind the planatary. It used a hyd acutator to operate the clutch. You used the clutch to launch then a man. auto from there. The trans has to be shifted in every gear.Put it in 3rd and you will start in 3rd.The weak link was the small R&P gear and they had to be changed every 10-12 runs. All the cars except one were changed to front trans.Jay adapted a converter to his and it works great.Mine will SOMEDAY go in my 63 tempest wagon with my all alu 389 engine.Tom

How did the guy with the Corvair get one of those transmissions I wonder...what was that trans called Tom ?

he worked for GM and got the names of the SD racers and bought them as they were pulled out.I think 2 came from M/T and one from fla.He iss in his late 70s and figured he no longer need spares. He sold a broken one with a fluid coupling to a guy I know and I bought the complete spare that is supposed to be ready to go.Will dig out the manual and explain how the system works.I know the pinion gear is hollow and the main shaft goes from the tq tube and through the front trans, then diff, then the rear planatry and out the flywheel and hyd cluth mech.Tom
