Anyone know of these Dill caps?
mrrec

Sure, they're Dill 627 - says so in tiny letters on the top. Standard issue and correct for most all 60's and 70's Chevy. I find them every once in a while on an old stem. Got a bunch from my Chevy dealer in his old cap jar.
There was also a set on our new '04 GMC Envoy. Yep, still being made but tough to buy new. My parts guy can get anything, but not Dill 627's. Dill probably only sell to OEM's.

No substitutes! Really, there are a couple of caps that have the raised dimple on top and look kind of close, but it MUST be a Dill 627. Just about anything crosses over, after all, they all fit on the stem.
Rick: On a releated note - do you have info on the valve extension as used on the 70 SS Chevelle? Part numbers are easy enough to find, but what are lengths? My 12k mile car has - probably - the orig extensions on it.

I have a friend who supplied GM with some oddball fasteners, light hardware, etc in the 70's & 80's. Says he knows exactly what Dill 627's are and has some (like boxes of 100) if he can find them. I have been thru his stuff long ago, nothing interesting, but I was not up on these caps. I'll keep you guys posted. I did find 7 of em in our can at the tire machine out of the 500 I looked at. I have to go now............my employees have called in some guys in white suits get me some help.

OK, My friend was able to find 400 NOS Dill 627 caps. Sounds like enough for 80 cars. All I want for 'em is what I paid.......NOTHING-FREE. Heres the only way I can think of to do this: Email me at
[email protected], tell me you are sending me a self addressed postage paid envelope George Lyons 4910 Peach Street Erie, PA 16509. Limit 5 caps per friend, OK ? I will respond to every Email request until the 400 are gone, but dont send it out til I do so I dont waste your $ if they go too fast. I'm working on another source for more so hang in there. My youngest son is getting married to his German girlfirend next month. I found her a cheap car, and old BMW with some life left. Was doing a bunch of work on it over the weekend, as I have free use of my brother's shop on weekends. When I went to balance the wheels, lo and behold, two dill caps. Swapped them out for some smooth ones. Funny thing is, I remember seeing some on Ebay a while back. I decided someone had finally crossed the line from anal to somewhere beyond obsessive, and determined I wouldn't be that crazy to go shopping for correct valve caps!!!! What's next, I thought, launching a search for the original oil (not the brand, I mean the actual oil) that was in my car? Oh well, as long as they were free.

I'm so happy that you guys have jumped on the valve caps. There is a federal law, though, that states: "Correct Dill 627 caps may not be used on Chevrolets with incorrect fiberglass RWL tires."
Nice move, George.
Now, let's talk about wheel weights. You know they were only installed from the factory in 1/2 oz increments, on the backside of the rim, and there is a specific style. See the last issue of the NCRS Driveline for specifics. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Valve Stem #9422212 is 1&11/32 inches long.
It was used Originally in 1964-75 on ALL Chevrolet cars including the SS Chevelle.
The reproduction tire stores today use a Stem that is 2&1/4 inches long.
Way to long compared to the originals.

I don't have that latest issue or any issue for that matter, about the weights being installed ONLY on back of wheels.. can someone enlighten me as to WHY this would be the case... why would the factory care, assuming it was done for aesthetics reasons?
Mike
Because they would intefere with Trim rings mounted on the outside of the rim,if so inclined.

Rick
Was this "procedure" for all Bow-ties? or just Vettes? apply to spares too?
Thanks
Mike
I can't say for sure Mike.
I do know they didn't know what wheel was going to be a spare,so they would treat them all as if they were going onto the actual car itself.
I have a few books & a 1967 Uniroyal 16mm 60 minute movie,that shows the wheels & tires being assembled & static balanced.
I really don't know if different plants did different procedures.

Here is a short rundown of how one of the GM divisions did it (Oldsmobile) from Dave H, who was with Olds for a gabillion years...his thoughts were that each GM factory/division pretty much followed this procedure...
Factory balancing
All GM plants at that time used one weight to balance the wheel and tire assembly. Single plane, static balance. Hot wax was deposited in a color code to denote how much to put, and the tire was rotated and another yellow wax dot showed where to put it. You either got a 1/2 oz, 1 oz, 1 1/2 or 2 oz. Any more than that and the tire/wheel assy was rejected and replaced by another assy. Rejected ones were torn down and reassembled on another wheel/tire. Our main wheel and tire room at Oldsmobile Lansing ran at 600/hour in that time period, so that doesn't leave time to do split weighting like this tire/wheel. Some units were rebalanced with split weights in the audit area, so I guess I should never say never.
I think all the automakers used similar single plane equipment at that time (Micropoise, I believe), so my best guess is that is al old wheel/tire from a tire dealer. Toronadoes used dual plane dynamic balancing due to the huge offset in the wheel. That was done on another line.
My 68 came from the factory with Goodyear steel radials (an option on Cutlass, but not 442's) but they were defective and unsafe. Goodyear recalled all of them and gave a new set of anything you want just to get them off the road.

Regarding the valve stem length discussed earlier, the normal short valve stem most tire stores use is called a TR413 or just 413 and is listed as 1 1/4 inches long in the dill catalog. From your description it sounds like the repro tires are coming with 418 valve stems which are listed as 2 inches long. There is a stem length in between the two called a 414 which is listed as 1 1/2 inches long but not all tire stores carry them. From the responces it sounds like some of you are on good terms with local tire stores and should be able to get them free or cheap. I usually sell them for .22 each but don't always have them on hand. Also I had my supplier get me a box of Dill 627 caps but it sounds like no one is going to need them now.I would be interested in how well the valve caps in an envelope go through the mail sorting machines.

Dennis:
Here's a poor pic of a correct weight. It is a Bada MICRO. The weight marking will be on both sides of "MICRO" ie: 1.5. A larger number ie: 43 must NOT be present. This is the weight in grams and indicates a later (80's?) weight. The weight will also have raised "wings" at the outer, upper edges. These are right for probably all 60's and early 70's Chev according to Gary S. Beaupre that wrote the NCRS article. The article is over three pages in the NCRS Corvette Restorer V31, No. 3, Winter 2005 (not the Driveline as I erroneously stated in a previous post). It is excellent and you really need to get a copy if you are nutty about this level of detail. I'll bring you a weight (if I remember) when I bug you about selling the LS6 at LaHarpe like I do every year.
These weights are a lot tougher to find than Dill 627 caps but they're out there mixed in with the old weights. Tire stores everywhere will be looking for restraining orders soon.......
Installation on the backside of the rim, only, is specified in Assembly Manuals and, as Rick pointed out, was done to prevent the weights from interferring with the trim ring clips if so equipped. The weight limit, I believe, was 5 oz - then the tire rejected. Weights are always grouped ie. never one at 2 o'clock and one at 5 o'clock.
Now, I understand, the major shows will be checking lug nut torque. It must be within 2 ft/lbs or you're out! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/haha.gif

Here's a much better photo of a correct Bada MICRO weight. Per the NCRS article, this version has a "B" instead of the weight on the left and is also considered correct.
There are several other weights considered correct, as well, includeing those marked "OEM". Remember, though, no metric weights (grams) and no increments other than 1/2 oz per the Assy Manuals. Max single weight was 2.5 oz and any combination up to 5 oz.

Correct on the yellow. They used a red and a green to denote the amount, or any combination (2 red, 2 green, 1 of each). Don't recall what meant what.
Olds put all weights on the outside of the wheel, dealers were instructed to shift weight slightly (or move to inside) if interference with trim ring/wheel cover clips. These were put in the trunk and installed at the dealer. 3 oz was the max weight allowed in repair area, 2 oz in the automatic balancer in line.
Not sure if this was same at Chev and other divs, but guess that it was or very close.

DILL 627 valve stem caps.
As mentioned above these caps were used everywhere.
The Schwinn factory used the 627 caps on the Stingray.
I have these on all my Survivors as shown on my ‘64 Super Deluxe below.
Pontiac used various length valve stem “extensions” according to the wheel disc usage.
Below is Pontiac information and MPC application.
My ‘65 GTO Survivor with it’s tire valve extensions for the wire wheel disc.
