I have been emailing the owner and he tells me that he does
not have the documentation on the car. Its has been nicely
restored with many origional l78 parts. The car needs a few of the origional parts , but it would be nice if it had the documentation. He tells me that one of the owners misplaced
the documentaton ( Nice Car)

Some offer! There is one in Hemmings right now with #'s match drivetrain for around $30k I think, and another one with some missing drivetrain for around $5k. Last month there were two in Hemmings for less than $20k, one with paperwork.

I have looked personally at the $30k car in NH and I passed on it. As for cars that are for sale for less, they rarely have original driveline or docs. A "CORE" BB L78 with matching driveline is hard to come by. Even harder to find one that hasn't been chopped up or modified. If you buy any BB Nova in the 15-30k range and then do a "REAL" resto on it you will have at least another 30-40k in the car. The quality frame off cars will always command a premium whether they are Novas, Camaros, Chevelles or whatever... the cost for original parts combined with the labor to do the job right have a big impact on the selling prices. There are always exceptions and sometimes people find a "deal", but you just don't see many L78 Novas for sale, especially nice ones.

No argument here Tom, just letting people know that they have options with the BB Novas - especially if people don't require full #'s matching, high end cars.

Pretty tough to sell a high dollar car with just one pic. Especially considering that the one pic shows an ill-fitting front bumper and an incorrect rectangular side view mirror. If the owner left those, it makes you wonder what other less easily corrected items are out of place. Definitely not a color you see everyday though.

I have a 70 Nova SS. It's an L-48, not an L-78, but it has side mirrors that are rectangular. I thought they were an option to the round ones???
Thanks---

Looks like the seller added about 100 pics (I didn't wait for them all to load). Many redundant, but good pics of engine and tranny stamps. Are those the proper style redlines for that year? They look like the mid '60's style (as opposed to 70 series Wide Oval looking tires).

The Standard Nova Door Mirror was the round design,if you got the upgrade mirror, that was a Remote control door mirror.THAT one was a retangular mirror.

The Chevelles & Monte Carlos etc. used the Std. Rectangular design as Std. equipment.

YENKO DEUCE REGISTRY

The red lines were not available in '70, they stopped in '69. The rectangular mirror was not standard.

Thank you all for the mirror info. I also have a mirror on my passenger door, is that correct or added by a previous owner??? I owned a 70 Nova SS back in the 70s, it had one round door mirror on the driver-side door...that's all.
Thank you kindly-

The auction on the L78 Nova seam to be DOA, for technical reasons. This technology is great as long as you don't have a back slash or semi colon out of place. That was a 70.95 closed quotation mark error on my part. Ouch!!! The original auction has been canceled and re-posted at http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4540210069 There are 40 high resolution photos to be viewed....I hope.

OK, here goes. First, I saw some photos of this car awhile back while the resto was going on, so the subject is not new. Overall the car is decent and certainly in better shape than most. The negatives are as follows: redlines not available in 70 and the tire style is completely wrong, should at least be wide-ovals, no seat belts that I see, no smog or smog manifolds, dipstick is painted bright orange, detailing on front sub-frame is starting to go down hill already, hood hinges painted gray??, etc. Now for the positive and constructive part of the program: why don't people restoring these cars ask for help or info from those of us who have the information. I would be willing to share photos and info with anyone anytime if it can help them with a Nova resto. I'm sure others would also and that includes other cars, like Camaro and Chevelle, too. This hobby needs to have an open exchange of tech info and resto knowledge. In the end we all benefit with better quality cars.

"Ouch" That's quite a dressing down you've given me and my Nova. I stated in my auction that there may be some things that are not exactly to factory finish. Redlines: I had a brand new set of 5 7.75's, I put them on, I like'em. I will put any set of tires the new owners wants on the car free of charge. Seat Belts: I have the seats belts but I don't like the way they look laying around on the seats and the shoulder harnesses always seem to come off the clip and hit me in the head. Smog: You're right no smog system. Dipstick: That one got by me. Sub-Frame: I restored this car to drive not sit and I drive it so I guess that's the trade off. Hood Hinges: powder coated gray not painted. "Now for the positive" I didn't hear any. But that's OK I know the criticism is all in good fun or at least should be. In fact I did ask for and received a ton of help from people on and off this site and I have thanked them many times. The bottom line is even though I'm not a Nova expert I tried to do as quality a restoration as I could. More importantly I enjoyed the hell out of restoring and now driving this car. Hopefully my next Nova will be better than decent.

Rick, seems appropriate to respond since I started the mess. First off you have a cool car, no argument. Second my comments were meant to cover the broader picture of our hobby and peoples knowledge about what is correct. I am sure that there are many things wrong with the cars in my collection, the only difference is they are not for sale. You are selling your car on ebay, which is a public forum for all to bid on. Many people visit this site(SYC) to gain knowledge about particular cars when they are restoring or possibly buying. My comments were not a critique of your enthusiasm or intent, merely informational for those who may be wishing to buy your car. I am a Nova enthusiast first and foremost and I have been fortunate enough to have collected some nice cars. Sharing info and pointing out some of the detail items on a car for sale is good for the hobby and good for the potential bidders. So many people buy cars with little or no knowledge of what they are doing. I only want to help the process not hurt it. Once again, you have a neat car and you should be proud of your work and effort. If I can help in anyway please feel free to contact me. I wish you luck with your sale and good luck to the new owner. Please consider joining National Nostalgic Nova for a connection to other Nova owners. You might also want to visit Steve's Nova Site, many here do. Lots of helpful info and conversation on all year Novas. Once again, good luck with your car!

As to the owner, It's been said over and over here.. Nice car.... and.... when folks start nitpicking or pointing out Trivial things.. you must be doing okay! I know i wouldn't be able to handle the critics if mine ever went on the Bay http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Got to bite your tongue. Rick: Don't be offended. I am sure Tom's statements were informative only. I have stated several times that I don't think I would want my car "critiqued" by this group (once it's done that is). These cars are 35 years old. Unless one was wrapped in plastic wrap, sealed in Tut's tomb and left until yesterday, there will be "incorrect" items. Haven't seen one advertised yet with the orignal oil. The fact that the items in question are so few on your car is a tribute to your restoration.

I especially like your statement that you built it to drive. So it doesn't have the smog set up. Not many of those were still intact after about two days of ownership.

All would agree, it is a nice car, and you do have the most important parts with matching numbers.

I've exchanged a PM with Tom and told him that no offense was taken. I enjoy that part of the process, it educates me. But the fact is that this site is a "tough room" and I knew going in that the Nova would be pick up off ebay and dissected. And it's a little scary when you put your blood and guts into a project and you know that it's going to be critiqued by every expert in the freaking country. But, so far so good. It's almost a right of passage. At least no one has popped up a said "Hey that was my grandma's Nova it had a 6 cyl in it when she had it". I've sold a numbers of Chevelles and Z28's over the past few years and they do the same thing on Team Chevelle and Team Camaro. But this being "The Super Car Site" it's a little different. There are some real serious players on this site

I appreciate all the kind comments about the Nova, especially the ones concerning the quality of the auction. I took great care in presenting the Nova as accurately and honestly as possible with as many high res photos as I thought was necessary to show the true appearance of the car. It kills me when I see a high dollar car on ebay with 12 dark grainy photos. What's the point? IMO Ebay is totally a visual medium where photos rule.

Thanks again

God I love these cars.

Regarding the block pad pictures. I had the advantage of having the engine out of the car. I think if you set the camera on it's "Macro" setting you should be able to get as close as 4" from the subject. I'm not an expert photagrapher but what I've learn about taking digital pictures is that it's not about how many mega pixels your camera has it's about lighting, when to use the flash (almost never) and try to always use a tripod and a timed shutter so you are not touching and/or shakeing the camera at the instant the picture is exposed. Mega pixels make the picture bigger not better. All the pictures I have on the auction were taken with an inexpencive 2.2 mega pixel camera.
