View Full Version : Ignition Switch Marking

When looking at Joe's '69 L78 Nova at the Pittsburgh WoW show, I noticed this bright red paint marker on the chrome ignition switch, on the steering column. It was only red on the recessed area of the switch. When I questioned Joe, he simply replied that it was on all of the cars they had restored.
I knew I didn't have it on my Yenko Deuce, and assumed that it had worn off during the years of use, even though something that bright should have stuck out in my mind when seeing other deuces. Joe had said that he didn't have to touch up the red mark on his switch, so logic says that I should have seen it on the low mile deuces. I planned to check my 69 Nova SS, which only has 62k miles on it.
I looked at my '69, and the red mark is there, no trace on my deuce though.
Did this red mark stop for the '70's?
I've seen it on Original 1970 cars, and up to 1971 vehicles in junkyards.I wouldn't say for sure it was original to all of them, but then it could've worn off too.(How they heck can it even wear away out of that recession anyway?)
I've had a few of those ignition switches NOS in the box,and they have the Flat Red paint mark too.I do see it visible in some of the 1970-71 35mm Chevrolet Dealer Filmstrips.
Possibly more then one plant made the switch for GM,and therefore the indifference?
I do like to see either a properly restored car,or survivor having this red mark as well as the Key Minder Buzzer working too.

Hmmm... so it's limited to pre-70 vehicles, what about orig condition '70 Yenko Deuces? Schoneye, what does you car have? We have documented mid-year changes on the Novas that occur in the middle of the 3 week deuce run, so maybe this is one of them?

One of my 70 parts car has the red ign. bezel (december 69 build) , my 69 L78 (april 69 build) and my 70 L78 (May 70 build) did not, I was always wondering what the significiance was, I look forward to the day when every single piece on the car will have it's own thread here.! SULLY

My air cleaner wing nut is turned is 37 degrees clockwise from the centerline of the car. I think it's original, but I'm not positive. Does anyone know for sure what the correct alignment should be?
During what month & Plant was your car built at?

I would venture a guess that the 37° deviation (plus or minus 3°) is correct. The question is; which side of the Mississippi River the car was built. Cars built West of the Big Muddy seem to have the wing nut Counterclockwise while the Eastern cars were Clockwise. Isn't that what your research indicates Rick? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Just an observation gentlemen. My 1970 Camaro does not have the red makring. My 1969 Z28 does have the marking. I think it unique to Hi-Po cars.
I had two steering columns I personally pulled out of a 1971 Pontiac Grand prix, and a 1971 Buick Skylark.
These both had Red dabbed Ignition switches and still retained their factory cast flashing covering the release button. Thus they were never been replaced.

Mossport,
The above both sound like relatively low-performance cars to me... Rick, was there anything special about the pontiac and buick these switches were in, or was it a standard model GP and 'lark? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif
I personally had a 69 malibu 350 3 speed a few years ago that also had the red paint, i don't know for certain if it had ever been re-touched up or not, but it was there and looked original to me.

So far, it looks like the camaros and Novas stopped in '69 or early '70, the Chevelle body styles continued it into 70+.

My Dad's untouched, one owner '77 ElCamino has the red mark on the ignition switch...and there's nothing high performance about it.
I think alot more of these switches may have had the red and it simply wore out or chipped out much more early on than you might expect. Paint does not stick well to chrome, and that little sliver of red bakes in the sun on the steering column, one day it gets bumped with a finger and now your red hash mark is a tiny red flake on your floormat. Kinda like the chrome plating around horn buttons and radio knobs...it doesn't take much abuse or use for that stuff to be worn off completely. Just my opinion...
I agree more had them later on then we think,at least in the A-body line.
Those donor cars were a 1971 Pontiac SJ & Buick Skylark Custom 4 dr sedan.
