Here's something some of you may find interesting. Especially you deuce owners. In the very early seventies a friend of mine bought a LT-1 out of a wrecked 1970 Z-28 and put it in his corvette. A few years ago he put the motor in a 1969 Camaro with a 4 speed, nine inch slicks, headers and 4.11's or 4.56's. Now this motor has never been opened up and retains the original, camshaft, intake manifold, and 780 Holley. Anyway the thing runs 12.30's but I forget the MPH. I think that's really impressive and says alot about the performance potential of these engines. Correct me if I'm wrong but I want to say that in the 70 Corvette the LT-1 was more expensive than the LS-5 454.

You're right.
The 1970 Corvette with a:
ZR-1 was $968.95 MFR's suggested-Dealer Price $699.20.
LT-1 was $447.65 MFR's suggested-Dealer Price $323.00.
LS-5 was $289.65 MFR's suggested-Dealer Price $209.00.
L-46 was $158.00 MFR's suggested-Dealer Price $114.00.
Nice Engine!!---The pizza parlor where I use get my daily nourishment from back then ,the owner's son had picked up one in '70---really a sweet engine combo, --I don't recall the name of the color right now--Burnt Orange?

Mostly Mid to low 14's stock in the 1320. The more gear the better for the LT-1. Engine was very responsive to modifications. Car Craft did the typical day 2 modifications in a 1970 issue, on a 70 Z-28.
As I recall, they reworked the spark, re-jetted the Holley, put on headers and slicks. The result was high 12's and a broken U joint shortly after.

If anyone has this issue of Car Craft, I'd be interested in a copy if someone could scan it and email it to me.

Those times are absolutely believable. In 1973 thru 1975 I had a 69 Z28 with the LT1 engine out of my 70.5 Z28. I had the optional off road '140' cam, an Edelbrock Tarantula intake and a 750 Holley double pumper. Remainder of the engine was factory stock. Ran a 4.88 gear behind an M22 and the car ran consistent 12.0's with an occasional dip into the high 11's. Had a lot of fun on the street with it too! The guy who wound up with it put in a 5.38 gear and got down in the 11.80's http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif He blew the motor buzzin it to 8 grand all the time with that gear - imagine that http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif

The real proof is at the Pure Stock Drags in Stanton, MI!!
As in: Sept. 2004, Benoit Holloway from Marion, LA, 1970 Corvette with an LT1, 4sp, with 4.10 gear: 12.574 @ 112.50MPH !!!!! The car is Certified Stock too http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

I just want to tell MY real factual expereince. After returning from Vietnam, I ordered a 70 Z-28 with Turbo 400 (in the tree) with 4:10 gears. Over time removed all the SMOG, Mods to stock 4555 Holly, Recurved Dist, Tarantula Edelbrock, Hooker Headers, Hurst Line-Loc, Stock Long Block, Stock T-400 & Convertor and small (??)Racing Slicks.
High 12's.....maybe not impressive sounding, but in the day, was quick.
Chuck
Those really are some incredible times you all quoted.
M..thats a good 2 seconds faster then you two at SCR7.

Here's the link, Chuck. This 'Vette flies, I watched it run during the June race last year, amazing - on belted tires. You can read the 'rules' section of the PSMCDR site, and see the differences vs NHRA. These PSMCDR's are true 'stock', especially when they are 'Certified'.

I may be slow, but, everybody starts somewhere http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif I'd be happy to race a red/red '70 chevelle http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

-------January/February 1970 I bought a new LT1 Corvette roadster. 4:11s, close ratio. With about 2000 miles, yanked the smog and put a set of OK sides on it. Then borrowed a pair of slicks. Cant remember how tall they were but couldnt have been over 8 inchs wide. Went to Palm Beach Dragway (pre Moroso) and ran a 12.91 thru the traps in 3rd gear at about 7200/7300. Never so much as touched either the distributor or the carburetor! Man that Vette would run!............Bill S

Speaking of 3rd gear, on the third round of the Deuce Shootout Final between me and frankie, I went through the traps in 3rd at a high rpm trying to beat that little bugger http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Our Pure Stock is a lot like how NHRA's "stock" used to be back before they turned it into Super/Stock and S/S turned into skinny tired Pro Stock cars...it's interesting to pick up an old NHRA rule book and see just how stringent the rules *used* to be...at one time, NHRA stock actually was STOCK! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
