Carlisle...Overcast was how it started. I did end up with an excellent Corner/end of the Row Spot so the Car was under constant watch by everyone that went by. I never realized that a Car as Rare as these would have so Many "Experts" who know Everything about them! as I usually do in these types of Situations, I act like just another non chalont observer and listen as they Tell their girlfriend about why this Car should Have a Console and Hub Caps...etc. One guy who was really interested told me about his Pace Car Convertible he sold two years ago. according to Him It had a Factory 427 and Rear Disc Brakes!!! I even had an older guy reach down and start to stroke the Endura Bumper. when he started to knock on it, I offered for him to feel the sole of My shoe in his A$$ as it too is made of Rubber! and of course I did meet a Few real good Folks as well. Site Member "Scott S." snuck up and asked if I would be interested in a Trade with a Yenko Deuce! I immediately knew he had to belong to this Forum and of course he does!! Real Nice Guy. I was amazed at the amount of attention the Car received. It was the Only COPO Camaro in attendance. over and over I kept hearing, "I've never seen one in person" and comments to that extent. More Cell phones took pictures of that Car today than did regular cameras. now I know times are changing!! I met another guy from Frederick Md. who is trying to get his Car certified. I had all my Documents with me and helped discuss some untried strategies with him. I hope it works out for him. But unfortunately, The Weather did not hold and the skies opened up at 6:30. I decided it was time to Pack it up and head home as Tomorrows Forecast is for Thunderstorms thruout the day. I was really looking forward to a Nice weekend out there as I need a Weekend away from Work. Carlisle in good weather is hard to beat! but there are plenty more events coming up! I hope to see some more of you at them. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Well there sure was plenty of rusty parts!!! IMO Carlisle is becoming more of County Fair/Flea Market than a true collector car event. I really don't want to look at old bicycles, statues of horses(life size!) and wicker baskets!!!! I know they have to fill the spaces and thats what pays the rent but it seems to be watered down from what it once was. There was plenty of waxes and polish, anti-fatigue floor mats and hiney seats and the usual array of mystery lubes and powder coated accessories. I would pay $20.00 to get in if the show was strictly automotive related without the "carnival crap". Maybe if you feel as I do it would be appropriate to share are thoughts with the Carlisle folks. The one thing I noticed most was the serious lack of any original or desireable parts. They just were not there. Maybe they all sold on wed before I arrived but I doubt it. Hopefully the GM show in June will be more focused and have less of the clutter. Did run into some of my car buddies and fellow Nova fans so that was good. Hope everyone had a safe trip back.

Don't doubt it... by friday or saturday the place has been picked over 1000 times, so its not surprising there isn't much in the way of rare stuff there by then. As they say, the early bird gets the worm. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

The best Carlisle vendors no longer sell there, they simply attend to buy - and then put it on EBaY.

I concur. There is very little to find anymore. I was there all day Thurs and till about 1pm Fri. and spent a grand total of $59. on parts! Very few of the people walking in the aisles were carrying parts, so I wasn't the only one who couldn't find anything to buy. The few good things that were there were still there when I left because of unrealistic prices.

By the way Belair, there was a set of 4 M/T Challengers (15x6), nicest originals I've ever seen, two mounted with NOS M&H period cheaters. Set price: $1350. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Notice how many empty vendor spots there where?? And I agree it is turning into a country flea market.

Another pet peave is the new car wrecks and parts that people are bringing in. If I wanted to see a '05 wrecked Silverado I would check out my local wrecking yard.

A friend and I have been going to spring sand fall carlisle for 15 years. We have noticed the decline over the last 4-5 years. We have both made the decision not to go in the fall.

If the buyers don't go, the vendors won't either, its sort of a double edged sword. As long as people buy on ebay and don't attend swap meets for their parts, the vendors will continue to sell them online instead. I buy and sell stuff on ebay myself, but i still go to swap meets and enjoy myself...usually finding something neat to haul home with me. Another thing to remember is the parts we all bought 15 years ago simply are not as readily available anymore... vendors have always bought and resold parts from each other, thats been going on as long as there has been a swap meet there. I do agree there is an over-abundance of "junk", from taiwan die cast cars to wicker furniture, but i still manage to bring home a "prize" or 2 every year... you just have to dig a little harder than you did 15 years ago. i think the same could be said for any swap meet thats been happening for as long as Carlisle.

I agree Joe, it's still worth attending, but you have to dig a little harder. I try to use it as a way to buy run of the mill parts that I would normally scrounge at a junk yard. I don't have the time to spend in yards anymore, so I will pick up a 692 pump if I can, or other parts that I know will be a pita to pull off of a rusted out junker.

BTW, the best of the best has always been sold on Wed. afternoon and very, very early Thurs. morning - and usually by other vendors. It is very common that when the end user buys a part, it was already sold several times that morning between vendors!

Let's also not forget that many of these "rare" and "hard to find" parts just simply aren't trading hands anymore. Many of them are being hoarded away by collectors or being used on restoration projects. With each passing year the cars and parts we all covet become that much older, scarcer, and more in demand. Can you blame a vendor for not having the same top quality original parts year after year? Hardly, especially considering everyone who's participated in this thread has something "good" they bought at Carlisle either tucked away on a shelf somewhere or bolted to a car they've restored. The bottom line is, there just isn't much "old stuff" to be discovered anymore, it's getting used up. The days of entire late 60's early 70's era cars being dismantled and being sold for parts are near over. "Parts cars" of yesteryear are today's "project cars" which only increases the demand for parts. The pickings are indeed getting slim, and it's certainly noticable at places like Carlisle where good vintage parts used to be everywhere, but it's not Carlisle or even swap meets in general that are to blame for the change, it's just the passing of time. Just like you don't find the good old parts in boneyards like you used to, you don't find them at swap meets anymore either. Be glad that Carlisle remains as unchanged as it does...it's still a great place to spend a day hoping you'll find that elusive part, even if the odds are stacked increasingly against your finding it.

As for the days of going to Carlisle to buy a nicely restored car at a proper market value...well that's another story. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif

Marlin,Joe and Erik hit the nail on the head I still go to them all you sometimes luck onto something you need at a fair price but you better be there when they move in the stuff, you guys have probably been laughing at me and my goofy 4dr cars I have been dragging home.. but up here...it has almost dried up for old cars lying around ..these cars are invaluable for all the correct bolts, screws and such we need for the 2dr cars we love so much.

Bud.

I agree with the group that Carlisle "ain't what she used to be" all the rare/hi-po stuff goes on ebay where even the uneducated will get top dollar for thier parts without leaving the house. I did pick up a "6060AP" 70 LS6/L78 W/P pulley in a pile of parts but that was about it, paid a good price for it, but didn't get it for nothing ( if anybody is interested in it, I need an orig 1105 P/S pulley)I mutual friend of the group mentioned that he found a MARCH 70 dated 4557 Holley guy wanted $900, he passed and naturally it was gone immediately. For those of you that know the scarcity of that date/number, $900 is practically free. As lame as it was, I will probably go again next year... SULLY

I have an 1105,& would have traded you for that 4557. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Would you have a pair of 178 & 879 Post Aug.69 dated Ex. Manifolds?

JRSully
04-26-2005, 05:49 AM
For a March 70 4557, you would have to have a dozen 1105's.!, that date is extremly rare, heard it was the last assembly line date Chevy used for the late 70 L78's and LS6's. As they are getting $1500.00 for Jan 70 4557's now, I can only imagine what a March 70 would go for. I don't currently have any manifolds fitting your bill, but if you are interested in unloading the 1105, let me know. Thanks for your interest.
