For starters, the car is incredible!!!

But, I just don't get it? $400k++++ for a garage queen? IMO it's real value is as a reference peice for others restoring LS-6 cars.

For that kind of coin I could get a couple of really nice 427 cars, or literally a fleet of L78 cars!!!! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

I just don't see the point http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif. Call me simple http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif.

I agree. I have a huge file on this car including many dozen photographs that I have used many times for reference. It would be very nice if an article were done on this car with close up photos to help others who want to restore these types of cars and use for reference. Shame to waste it.

What is the story on the car. Why does it have no miles ?

I don't think I've ever seen a 70 LS6 without Cowl Induction that did not have the dual snorkel air cleaner. Does anyone know if this car was delivered new with the standard open element air cleaner and has anyone ever seen another?

Mark,i owned an 19000 mile ls6 that had the open element air cleaner. you can look on the builsheet and it shows that. where is bill (red alert) he had told me a friend of his had owned this car in the 80's i believe.

The former owner told me the man got it for his wifes birthday she drove it to the store and told him ill never drive it again. So he went and bought her a biscayne. the grandson remembers going around the block in it every so often.

Three possible air cleaners were available on the 1970 Chevelle Super Sport from all 7 plants.
In Box #55 of Buildsheet:
*SS-Open Element
*DG-Cowl Ind. Seal
*CO-Dual Snorkle

I talked to Tony P. 12 months ago when he had it for Sale on Ebay & remember when it was at Russo-Steele at Az. in January w/25.2 miles.
He told me the Original owner removed the A.I.R. system soon after taking delivery.Brought it home for his wife, she drove it around the block a few times, then parked it.She just hated it.Remorseful, they let it sit before selling it to another, who saw it as a Future collectible, while in storage,he was offered big money back then to sell it to another who saw it as a collectors item too.
Tommy Brooks was the second owner,Rick Walters was the third.
When Tony Pate got it,the Drivers side door would not engage so they had to remove the doorpanel to free it up,& found another buildsheet behind the panel.
An original correct date coded A.I.R. system was recently put on.

Was the car undercoated at the dealer or factory? Looks like it was a dealer or owner spray job with it getting on the exhaust and everything. Very cool low mileage car that deserves to be in a museum.

Dealer appllied the Undercoating after taking delivery.
Some interesting details:
It's missing the "CHEVELLE" grille emblem.
That trunk is Text book!
The underneath hood overspray.
Those General 700 Bia/Belts! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif

And I can't see a Red Key lock mark on the Ignition switch of this February 24th built car.
Those look like Dill 627's?

Rick,
In regards to the missing "Chevelle" emblem from the grille. The "SS" emblem is upside down also. Maybe the car suffered some minor damage at some point over the years. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

LOOK at Left side (drivers) smog tube.......Guess I should ask at Chevelles.net site.......but does anybody know how long or when this style of "TREE" was used versus the style that makes 90' bend around front corner of valve cover, that is always seen on 69 Camaros
I'm trying to determine what MIGHT have been correct on 01C Camaro L-78.....assy manual shows SAME as this Chevelle, but VERY difficult if at all to find THAT style TREE............

Nick
I doubt there was ever some minor damage done to this front end.The people I know who have seen this car in person would've spotted something like that.I remove the "SS" center emblem & the "Chevelle" emblem when I get my car ready for a show so maybe they've done similar.

Don
They may not mean anything,as VOLO,NICAB,& Midwest Car Exchange here do that all the time. They sell a car, then the new owner says resell it for me.Who knows?

Chuck
I don't know if Norwood & Van Nuys were the same as the other 7 Chevelle Plants,(Van Nuys did build Chevelles),but that style Smog tree falls into the correct timeline for this LS6.
From research I have gathered,January looks to be when the Hockey stick style tube was changed over to this Chevelles design,as well as the underlined "GH" ink stamp on the Diverter being changed over to a white circle decal with a red "GH" in it.

What a beautiful, beautiful car. Of course, we know it can't be a real SS, according to the car show experts, with that column shift and bench seat! Almost (almost) makes me think my 12k and 18k cars are high mile.

Rick:
I think that hood overspray (underspray?) is the exception rather than rule. I'm not saying it's "wrong" (it can't be!), just unusual. I've never seen orig with that much, have you?

Lots of great details that are so often overlooked or wrong:
Upper A arm bushing washers are black, not cad.
Master cyl is black, not natural.
Trunk spatter paint is very random and is sloppy on hinges.

I can (and will) look at these photos for hours.

Lets hope not every 70 Chevelle gets restored the way this one appears now...you can't take one mass produced car and put all the same mistakes or details on them.

My original paint LS6 which is also an Atlanta built car, has the SS emblem upside down in the grille also. The previous owner was the one who noticed it. There are a lot of other mistakes on these original cars, mismatched stripes, paint drips, etc. I'd love to have a complete detailed album of photos on this 26 mile car. Looks like an amazing car.

It's always fascinating looking at your cars Mark.....I sent you a PM, I have a couple NOS 61-2 big Pontiac parts your partner may be interested in........you guys miss me yet ? I may have to stop in to bust your chops next week.

There is truly nothing like the feel and patina of an original car....although this car has more the patina of an original new car I would guess. Pure time warp. But $440K??? I guess it's hard telling if it will garner that kind of dollars. If it goes for $440K, I'll take $90K for mine http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Exactly. That's why I mentioned a couple of details that are commonly wrong and have snowballed. My latest thing is chassis paint markings I'm finding as I do one of my Z16s. Some of these are UNDER the part's paint and were never visible after assy.

I can only restore the car as IT was made, not as someone else's was built or restored but that 27 mile LS6 sure is a very nice examble to compare notes on!
