ALTON, Ill. (AP) -- The 124-pound catfish a man from the St. Louis area town of Godfrey, Illinois, caught in the Mississippi River is getting a new home in Kansas City, Kansas.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources says the 58-inch-long fish is the largest catfish ever caught in Illinois and the largest blue catfish every caught in the world. The largest blue catfish caught previously weighed in at 121 pounds, eight ounces.

It took more than a half-hour for Tim Pruitt to drag the mammoth fish into his boat after he hooked in late Saturday below the Melvin Price Lock and Dam on the Mississippi River at Alton.

The Natural Resources Department says the fish has been kept alive and will be on display in a tank at the Cabela's Outfitter store in Kansas City.

Hooked it? In these parts, ones that big are usually noodled out...

AKA hand fishing. You find them on their nest, or in holes along the bank, and stuff your hand/arm in their mouth, and drag em out. (NOTE) Watch out it's not a snapping turtle, and you're not in deep water, as one that size will drown you if it doesn't let go.

I saw a Program where they demonstrated "Noodlin".
Two men sank a hollowed out stump in a narrow area of lake 4 feet deep. They came back later to see if a Giant catfish had claimed the stump it's home.
One man stood up in the water and crouched down to insert his entire hand and arm into the stump, and see if anything grabs onto it..You watch the mans face as half his arm gets taken into the Catfish's mouth.
He calls out "He took it!"..and the struggle of endurance begins.
The man in the boat offers assisitance if he needs it,but otherwise it is one man, standing in 4 feet of water, trying to land that catfish into the boat under his own strength and stamina. It can go on for a very long agonizing period,as you have to pull him out of the stump with your arm in his mouth, the put your other arm around it and lift it out of the water and onto the boat.
As Ken mentioned, sometimes you better pray you are stronger then the Catfish,or he'll take you under. http://www.floridakeysbest.com/florida_keys/kidsimages/FISHIE3.GIF

i've heard of people putting some kind of white powder used for fertilizing in the water of creeks and it starves the oxygen and fish will just float to the top trying to breath and ya just pick em out of the water, some of the fish i seen taken that way were huge, come from a small creek at that, now that is certainly illegal they would put you under the jail i bet.

Geez, you city guys just don't know what fun is.(Rob, you're not included here).Forgot to mention that muskrats, and an occasional beaver inhabit the same bank holes sometimes as those fish. You need to rub their belly first to see if it's fur, or skin. Pissed off muskrats have no sense of humor.
Another river fun time is findin clams with your feet. Had a friend who used to stuff the clams in his trunks. He doesn't do that anymore. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Years ago I would go fishing with my friends who are commercial net fisherman, we would find a school of weakfish and circle them up. They were pretty smart fish and stayed in the middle so we dropped sticks of dynamite tied to lead and tried to scare them into the net. worked really good and pretty fun to see the net sink down from the fish hitting it. This all ended when the coast guard and state police cracked down on this kind of fishing after another guy dropped his ciggarette in his box of explosives and turned his boat into a pile of matchsticks. True story, the guy lived but his eardrums havent been the same since..

Well, the poor fish is dead. It couldn't handle being moved around. The almighty dollar killed it. I don't see the need to put a specimen like that on display just to lure people into your business. 30+ years they estimate it's age and now it's dead. Makes me feel better every time I release a fish that I catch. Sorry, I'll get off my soapbox now.

It would have made it, if HawaiianJeff hadn't field dressed it. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif

**Easy now Jeff...these Kings are returning from 3-4 years at sea to a river that's 57 miles long to die, and this was caught at mile 44. Plus, there are long sections of the river closed to fishing where the Kings seem to prefer laying their eggs. We encourage release of Kings less than 50#, but only because the limit is 2 per year and you can usually do bigger with patience.

You guys are a trip, sounds like some good ole Texas Stories! What ever happened to some good ole worms and a cane pole and relaxing on the bank of the river for hours! If I was that much in a hurry for some fish I would go to a good reataurant and order some!LOL I am not going to mess with no DYNAMITE! I guess I am just to clumsy and would probably end up killing myself with the stuff.Although the old crank telephones do work great! But here in Texas if a Game Warden catches you it is HELL to pay! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif
