UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE...Tenney talked to Jim Wangers recently about this car and the story has some new facts.

I remember my dad speaking of his friend Jim Wangers' GTO. How he'd
feel the blood rush to the back of his head when Jim would get on it.
He'd quote the numbers it achieved in the controversial Car and Driver
magazine test comparing it to the Ferrari GTO. He'd tell me it was the
fastest car on Woodward Avenue.

I remember Jim's GTO in the lot at dad's office, McManus, John and
Adams, when I was four years old. The heat rising from the front
fender wells (of which I paralleled in height at the time), along with
the smell of fuel, oil and rubber. Oh, and it was the first car I'd
heard make those noises.

Feel pretty lucky to have it parked in our garage, today.

Jim ordered it new for the infamous Car and Driver test comparing it to
the Ferrari GTO (11/08/63 Production Manifest states “Delete all
insulation” “Memo 199 Tag Wangers”, among other stuff.). Additionally,
a 421 was installed. Per Jim Wangers, this was a factory effort. The
motor was a stock, big car 421 HO. It was “Bobcatted” at Royal Pontiac
and driven by Jim to Florida for the acceleration chapter of the C&D
road test.

A 389 equipped, nocturne blue pilot GTO was used for the "handling"
portion of evaluation.

The 421 in the red car met w/a bearing issue (#6, per Jim) during
testing and was flat-towed back to Royal by the blue pilot car. A
thankless task, it turns out, as the blue pilot car was crushed (also a
factory effort) shortly upon return. The red car (er, this one), fresh
“Bobcatted” 421 HO in place, was given to Wangers as his demo. It was
never modified beyond this while with Jim.

It was the car to beat on Woodward for a while, I'm told. And drew the
attention of, among others, a Royal Oak Cop named Bill Sherman. Near
the end of the year (08/21/04), Wangers took a new ’65 GTO demo, and
the ‘64 was placed in the showroom at Royal and sold, w/warranty, to
Bill Sherman. As noted, he knew what he was buying (Bill of Sale reads
“Wangers Demo”).

Bill also raced the GTO (at the track). The 421 eventually grenaded
and Bill installed a 428 and ran it some more. Then he parked it for a
while. At some point Bill and Milt Schornack (Royal's wrench) brought
the car back out, this time with a period-correct 421, 12.5 to 1’s,
Lunati solid roller, headers and cowl plenum - along w/a locked diff.
and 4.33's in a 12 bolt - for further track duty.

This is the way the car is currently configured - w/original paint,
interior (except front carpet) and 44K on the clock. Bill kept every
scrap of paper the car came with, along with subsequent service
records, bound in a notebook, which is still with the car.

Bill passed away, and his widow sold the car a decade, or so, ago to a
fellow in New Jersey. It is he who I pestered into, thankfully,
sending it along to me, recently.

It's a bit of a chipped up relic, and has Day 10 (or so) written all
over it. It'd likely be ripe for a resto for some. I sort of like it
as it sits, though.

I think I remember reading that "test" comparison. If I remember correctly, the guys at Car & Driver had virtually no drag race experience. Seems like they got the best time in the Pontiac by starting out in 2nd gear. Complained that there was simply too much "torque multiplication" to start out in first. Guess they never heard of feathering the throttle off the line!!! Yeah, that's how to ring out a muscle car and get the best time. This ring a bell for anyone? Anyone have a copy of the article? I am going completley on memory here, as I would have read this article while in college in the early 70's (had a bunch of car mags on microfiche in the library).

Someone help me out here.

that is an awesome piece......I wonder if thats the GTO that Wangers used to sucker guys with...they would tool around to the cruise spots or hang outs and sucker guys into races...what they would do (Wangers) was get them to bet against a bone stock GTO and pull the "HOTTER" one out after they made their wagers...this story was told by Wangers himself....it thats the one....you have indeed a very special car....

Thanks, gents.

Yep, the car spent past 15 (or so) years in Vineland, Marlin. Was found through another dealer, I'm told.

Heard same story re: this car, Blown Away. Though wasn't there as a witness.

Flipped through Hot Rod mags and stuff in school, too, Lynn. Don't have the C&D issue handy, though "torque multiplication" still owns those Schwinn-inspired redlines.

Thanks, Verne. Per Paul Zazarine's book, Don, Milt/Royal installed the cowl plenum, among other "performance experiments", in '64. Though likely had to remove to sell w/warranty end 'o year to Bill Sherman. Comes right off for "stock" look w/block-off plate on firewall.

Tenney:

Do you remember what issue of Car and Driver? I would like to run one down. I have a 1968 Car & Driver with a comparo test of a 68 Z/28 and Tunnel Port 302 Mustang. It is awesome reading. Sam Posey rung out both cars on the track. Z/28 was loaded with console and power steering, four wheel disc brakes, cross ram and TI ignition. Prepped by GM. Ran a 13.71 on the E 70 bias ply tires (looked like Suzuki tires, according to the author, expecially next to the F 60 15 tires stuffed in the Mustang wheel wells).

Any one remember what issue?

BTW, I agree, I wouldn't change a thing on this car.

Cool, Lynn. Been a bit since I'd flipped through that article. "It is, incidentally, a very pleasant car to go off the road in, provided you don't catch a finger in the whirling spokes of the steering wheel" seems an interesting item of test critera.

An aside, the "correspondent" the article referenced, Roger Proulx, was a copywriter at McManus who worked with my Dad and Jim. Roger penned, among others, the ad that featured an image of an empty garage at night with the headline: "There's a Tiger loose in the streets". Pretty popular in the day, I'm told.

Btw, I read the Posey/Tunnel Port/Cross Ram test in the school library a few years back. Weren't the meats on the Boss some trick one-offs and they couldn't score a set for the Z to even things up (been a while)?

Lynn
06-03-2005, 06:18 AM
YOu are exactly right. The "rules" were each camp could prepare the cars with anything available over the counter to the general public. That is why the Camaro had 4 wheel discs and the crossram. The Car & Driver guys balked at the sight of the Goodyears, especially since the paint around the wheel wells was blistering around the wheel wells, so they contacted Goodyear who told them they didn't make an F60 15 yet. Ford guy steps up and says, sure they do, how many do you want?

Pretty good reading. I need to dig that mag out and scan the article so all can see. Sam Posey was really entertaining. What fun.

I must have been thinking of another magazine that tested the early GTO. I specifically remember the jokers starting out in 2nd gear to keep from frying the tires in some magazine test. Sure thought it was that one. I do have a line on some older mags, and if I run across the March 64 Car and Driver one I will certainly pass it on to you.

No doubt this '64 GTO is one of the most significant cars of the Musclecar Era. Not only was the GTO the original American musclecar (some Mopar guys may argue), this '64 GTO put a young magazine, Car & Driver on the map.

Per Jim Wangers, the motor was a stock, big car 421 HO with a Bobcat kit while the car was with him (new thru 08/64). No headers, cowl plenum, etc.

Been told by others and have read that the cowl plenum and headers were built/installed by Milt, along with present 12.5 to 1, Lunati solid roller 421. Not sure when or in what sequence these items were fitted, exactly.

A 421 HO was fitted at the factory or Royal Pontiac (depends on who you ask).

[/ QUOTE ]

Well if you ask Jim Wangers, as I had the good fortune to be able to do most recently, the 421 HO swap was, in fact, a factory effort.

Oh, and it spun the #6 rod bearing during testing. Was flat-towed back to Royal by the blue GTO pilot car (which was 348 powered). The blue pilot car was crushed (also a factory effort) shortly upon return. The red car (er, this one), fresh "Bobcatted" 421 HO in place, was given to Jim as his demo. It was never modified beyond this while with Jim.

Thanks, Stefano. There's more cam, compression and gear in the Goat, though a bit tough to compare as I've never tried it w/proper meats out back. That, and I really don't grab it by the throat as fiercely as maybe some of the other stuff - but it's not boring.

I thought the 421 was installed at Royal, not at the factory.

Tenney
07-26-2007, 09:22 AM
Jim Wangers told me the car went from the line to engineering over a weekend for the 421 HO install - then went to Royal to be "Bobcatted".

Per Jim, this motor was damaged in Florida during the C&D test, and replaced with another 421 HO upon return to Royal - again by Pontiac engineers.

There's a Royal receipt dated 11/17/67 (signed by service tech: "Milt") for the 428 that's in the car now. 9770716 heads built '63-'64, so could be original to the car?

Still curious if there were any others done. Jim says the blue car was a 389. That he also said so few knew of the 421 install in this car (three guys plus the two in engineering) - and the level of approval it took to make it happen - seems unlikely there are many, if any.

Brief caption for the pics Carl so kindly posted ... Scott Tiemann finished the car early this month (big credit for the 'cool' due this fellow!), went to Meadow Brook, the GM shoot, and then its original stomping grounds - Woodward (slicks for the occasion).

Thanks, Sam … (not that I have much to do with the car's beauty or its history!).

One of the cool things about having the ‘64 at Meadow Brook and Woodward are the stories about it you hear from the folks who were there - and how many of those folks there actually are! They’re all grown-ups these days, but you get the impression that - in addition to the impact made by the Car and Driver test - Jim Wangers’ “hands-on marketing” on Woodward Avenue was no small success on a local level.

A fellow at Meadow Brook told me he was in engineering when the car was done. I asked if he did any of the work and he said no, but remembered it well – and mentioned he was “sworn to secrecy”. I got the sense he was pleased it was still around and doing okay.

Had Scott Tiemann do a bit of (er, lot of?) a clean-up on the car. I’d wanted a small dose or two of rust repaired (rust isn’t patina for me). Turned out pretty much every panel had been touched up here and there, and the underside had been painted black – no major damage of any sort, an old warrior for sure, but not so much a time capsule, per se.

Was tempted to retain the cool hot rod stuff that Milt had done to the car over the years for Bill Sherman - I did, it’s just packed away for now – but it seemed the car’s most unique history is as it left Pontiac Engineering and then Royal for Florida. Jim Wangers pitched this direction - and rightfully so, I think.

Hypothetically, if the factory only made one ZL-1 powered Vette, and it was used by GM for some notable publicity – and then later sent to Baldwin-Motion for a hit of mountain-motored Phase III, what do you do if/when it comes time to clean it up?

Today the ’64 has a new driver’s side quarter panel, a new floor pan piece near the driver’s foot well and a new windshield. It has two new front fender wells - as the originals were cut away to accommodate the headers - and a correctly dated 421 HO block. The heads and intake pre-date the build by a few months, may be the originals, and so were retained – plus Milt had done some nice work on those heads! It has an M-21 as installed by engineering, and the original 10-bolt is back in its place. 3.91’s would be engineering-correct, though retained the 4.33’s that were in there as they’re ’64 dated, I’ve a Royal service receipt for their install – and they’re pretty fun. Aside from these items and the new carpet and headliner, it’s all the old stuff - meticulously restored. Scott even cleans and/or re-plates the hardware!

Really would’ve liked to have dropped by the SCR, as well, and checked in w/some old friends, recent ones and scored some fresh ones - sounds (and looks!) like a blast.

Had Scott hauling the car around all month, figured it was time to quit asking - though bet he'd have had some fun, too!

Cheers. And thanks again to those who shared all the cool SCR pics and flicks ...

Not only was it not tweaked - it was not there ...!

The 250 Goat was a no-show in Florida, Sam, so Car and Driver said they referred to #'s from a previous test.

What's not to like about the General Lee?! That thing doled out some championship-level lawn jobs in its day!

Per Jim Wangers, Pete, sometime after his ownership the firewall was modified for cowl induction. I've read this was done by Milt Schornack. I've seen photos of three holes cut into the firewall. When I got the car, they'd been transformed into the opening pictured.

GTO vs. GTO, 1964

"The hook on which we hung the magazine."

I feel pretty lucky to have met Dave (as he introduced himself) last May. A legend whose editorials I'd enjoyed for years - he's Hemmingway to pretty much any automotive journalist you might come across - Dave couldn't have been more accommodating with my questions about my car and the road test (occasionally giving Mr. Wangers grief for slipping him a "ringer"!), while kindly sharing an anecdote or two of his own.

Recalling his writing, our conversations over the course of that weekend (and a few eavesdropped upon), it's tough not to be left with the sense that Mr. Davis made the most of his turn. Good guy. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/burnout.gif

"...in purely visceral automotive terms, I remember only that the first Mustang I drove caused me to cut my finger on an exposed sheet metal edge in the trunk, while my first ride in a GTO left me with a feeling like losing my virginity, going into combat and tasting my first draft beer all in about seven seconds.
I remember that the GTO slammed out of the hole like it was being fired from a catapult, that the tach needle slung itself across the dial like a windshield wiper, that the noise from the three two-throat carburetors on that heavy old 389 cubic inch Pontiac V-8 sounded like some awful doomsday Hoover vacuum God sucking up sinners." - David E. Davis

A gifted man. R.I.P.

My first car was a Burgundy 64 GTO 4 speed hardtop I bought from a high school friend. $125.00. I was stoked when I finally went to pick it up. It ran but had a spun bearing. There was an old guy that worked as a mechanic at the gas station up the street from my parents house that had a 65 Tri-power and he helped me, actually, I helped him install a 67 400. Drove it for awhile and got into too much trouble with it growing up in Atlanta and my dad took it to work one day where he managed a business that shredded cars and that was that. My flavor is Chevy, but owning that 64 GTO opened my eyes to all hotrods and factory muscle 60's and 70's. That Jim Wangers car has always left a mark on me. What a nice piece of musclecar history. Thanks for those pics and story.

And we have Hallmark moment #2.

Back to the car: hard to beat a 64 GTO. Didn't one of the car mags have one that had a transplanted 421 SD?
Forgive my Pontiac ignorance, but are the 389 and 421 pretty much the same externally?

Maybe? This one had a 421 HO installed in engineering and Bobcatted at Royal for the Car and Driver test.

Yes, 389 and 421 are dimensionally the same (likewise other Pontiac V-8's - no "big blocks").

It's a really cool presentation, Bruce. Jim was tasked by Pontiac with selecting a dealership that would serve as an outlet for special hi-perf. cars, parts and technologies - kind of a precursor to Yenko, Berger, Nickey, Mr. Norms, etc. - and he filled us in on why Royal was chosen - shared some cool first-hand stories about how things went along the way - and then how and why it went away. Glad to have had the chance to attend that one!

Hope so, Bruce, that'd be cool. Was told the museum taped the audio and are going to build a podcast with Jim's PowerPoint presentation. Will report back w/that if I come across it.

Agree - appears to be "floating" a little bit.

Man!! Mr Wangers looks great! Perhaps lost a little weight?

In any case I can only hope to be as sharp at 89 years of age.

Was recalling the time at MCACN, Keith, when a fellow who was admiring Scott's effort in cleaning-up the car pointed out his thinking that the windshield wipers were not originally so-polished, and Scott pointed out that the windshield wipers happened to be identical to those on the factory-original car beside it (and that car happened to be yours!).

Separately, came across a kinda cool David E. interview ...

The windshield wipers will blind you when the sun hits them just right.

Scott was rubbing on your car so much I had to ask him to stop: he was kicking up white lint and it was getting all over my car.

I learned a very valuable lesson one late night about 30yrs ago, never, ever, bet against one of Wangers cars in a street race. That little red Monza totally embarrassed a well known big tire car and his white Monte Carlo embarrassed plenty of cars also.
