View Full Version : 260...It's A Gas!
Recently I bought some memorabilia from a man,and I mentioned to him I always wanted a Wayne 511 Sunoco 260 Custom-Blend Gas Pump.He reffered me to a man in Ohio, who in turn sent me to a Man in Oklahoma, who in turn said there was one just found in Illinois.I called upon my good friend Steven J.,and we made a trek and saw what he had sitting in his Barn on his ostrich ranch...I was stunned! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

These pumps always got molested, and very seldomly retain their original Faces & Guts.
After the 1974 Oil Embargo, many of them were converted to 4 digit readouts, and single grade Low Octane,Unleaded Fuel.
This one, still having it's 3 digit readout, with "Half Gallon" price stated on the face, covering the multi grade selector as well as the Original Site Glass from when it was built in 1963.
In 1971 Sunoco came out with a Low grade Unleaded fuel titled,"SUNLITE".It didn't last long.

After three long weeks, and nearly 4 cans of WD-40,I was able to bring it back to it's Glory, with out Painting or replacing anything.

The Blender plate & buttons are all there, and still function properly.

Chrome plating cleaned up well, with Original used scarce Sunoco Fuel Filters still in place underneath cover. As far as I can tell,it was used until 1981,then stored away out of commission at Effingham Il. Sunoco..They took darn good care of it!

I removed the adhesive Vinyl Blue SUNLITE door decals,as I learned they were originally applied over the original face after 1971.I was surprised to find the near Virgin color scheme protected very well from the elements.
The Original Keys came with it,as did the parts/repair manual.

I did a Tokeheim 300 and used a motor to run computer... it really makes them neat, "ding ding" at every gallon. I hooked motor to switch on pump lever so when you remove nozzle and pull up the lever it starts. I've got a clock face I'm doing that I want to motorize. I think it will be neat to watch the clock turn and ding. That's a really nice Wayne you've got. Really hard to find one complete and not needing resto. Later Sunoco canopy light would look neat hanging over it.

Nicely done. Rick with an old pump like that is there any health hazards to worry about with old gas being in the filters or anything especially with it being in the house?
When I found it,the Guts,(Intestine pipes) were already cut out of it in the lower inside section.
They add 100 lbs. or more to the pump and are what make the pump smell like crude oil too.
I have not noticed any foul smell with mine.
I talked to a Lot of Gas & Oil guys and all confirmed that no matter how big a Die Hard Gas pump collector you are today, removing the intestine pipes is an accepted practice,do to their weight & smell.Buyers want to display Gas pumps in their homes & Garages,so that weight & Smell will just make it impractical.
I will offer this advice,if you find ANYTHING that interests you and is Close in destination to you...BUY IT!
The time & money to package, crate and Palletize these things can exceed $400.00 with insurance not being possible.
Some guys drive across the country with a Car trailer,to personally pick up the pump of their dreams,by themselves to insure a safe delivery. When I found this pump 5 hours away in my State,I considered it in my back yard & didn't hesitate to pull the trigger.
I guess Gas pump collecting as a whole is coming into it's own right now.
Pumps and parts are recording record prices.
I am watching ECO brand air meters right now,as I had one in my Local gas station as a kid in Villa Park.I used to admire that Air Meter cranking up & sounding off when I used it on my Orange Krate and later a Chevelle.
I want one,but not at $500-1000.00 for a wall mount or Pedestal display.
Figures, just when I get interested in them! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Jack Sim Has written a Book,"An Illustrated Guide to Collecting Gas Pumps"..He is out of St.Louis & I can Highly recommend him & his Book.It starts from the early 1900's all the way up to 1965.It has many original pictures of the early Gravity Gas pumps, not many on the electric 1960's-70's Pumps that I want to know more about, but still gives you an understanding about their heritage.
He is currently writing another book that will cover 1965-1972 gas pumps.
He also is writing a book about Air meters too, that should be out soon.
This Market is tall right now.

[/ QUOTE ]Rick, I know Jack and his wife Cindy pretty well and they have alot of stuff... If you ever want to meet him, just come to St. Louis and we will go see them.. As for the guts in the pump, the early visible types would be impossible to remove considering that is part of the structure, but the later pumps from the 40's to today its no big deal if they are gone.. The last two pumps I bought still had the guts in them and I yet to take them out and get rid of the waste.. It was hard as hell moving these things with that s--t inside, plus the 50's Coke machine my wife couldn't live without.. I think my back hurt for about a month after that.. Mark
Thanks Mark,I may take you up on that.
A few lurkers from the Oldgas site asked me for some detailed close ups of the Inspection Tags I found inside.

This is a Gas Can from the mid to late 60's I thought would show well with it.
This particular Sunoco/AC Sales Campaign was short lived,as they soon mandated gas Cans could not carry colors beyond the color Red,and Vehicles also became much more Fuel efficient too.

Too bad..................I'm 5'18"
Well it only took a little over three years, but I was able to acquire all the 50 year old original Wayne 511 ground plumbing & blending components that were removed from my pump long before I found it,as well as give everything a thorough cleaning and remove the foul smell.
I refused to blast or repaint ANYTHING,as I wanted everything to be natural and authentic as it originally was.I had to be finicky and pass on components that were too far gone or badly beaten up.I had to spray each component down with oven cleaner and bake it in the oven to get the heavy varnish and residue stains off. Then wipe down very rigoursly with a light thinner & clean the mounting areas and threads to be sure all went back together just as smooth. It is one marvelously constructed engineering design that 50 years ago musta seemed Hi-tech.I am in awe of the way these were put together, and who/how they did it.My knuckles are all scraped and cut from reaching into those tight areas, but I think the results were worth it.
Now the entire pump weighs in at just over 500lbs.in these pics and could still pump a liquid today if I asked it to.The tolerances between the pipe connections are pure & true and able to withstand the psi.I even rigged up the electrical junctions to accept again.
This is the cabinet empty as I showed earlier..

And have you already or are you going to modify it so the lights alone operate as the static display?.

I have three vintage gas pumps that serve as night lights around the garages. All three still retain ALL the original motors and plumbing. Too many people gut the old pumps so they're easier to move, especially if they're inside a garage,...... or a house, http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif but if you get them too light and easy to move, they tend to "walk away"!
If anyone wants my pumps,........ they're gonna have to work for them! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif
Dennis you're not alone in that thought.
I didn't really know if you guys would be that interested in this.Thank You! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif
I am looking for an unmolested mate for it,now that I have the hang of it and an influx of extra parts too,but it has to be holding a 3 digit pre-oil embargo computer.I don't want a later 4 digit, which there seems to be alot more of.
I used a few other pumps as a diagram, and actually bought another crappy partial pump to remove parts off of.That and attending as many oil & gas shows as I could, especially during the winter months. If you're not there by 6AM,you mind as well turn around and head back home because anything of value will be swallowed up already.
I found the wiring schematic & parts diagram in an old Wayne Service & Assembly manual. It was very helpful, but it was the input from fellow collectors,AND especially the few original gas&oil jockeys walking among us.You know who you are..
You guys are really under appreciated in my book...and of course,YOU WERE THERE! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif
There's a pic I posted on page 1 with it's lights on.The protective gun guards first came out in late 1960's,early 70's I believe & in various colors from what I've seen. This one was still holding a red one when I found it...Good eye on the date Pete. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Don't get me wrong, collecting and acquiring anything having to do w/Chevrolet and their vehicles is first and foremost with me and always will be.But Sunoco comes after that,as it was always considered the Gas station to work at when I grew up.Their gas grades catered to the Hi-Performance leaders, and was one of the first stations to offer the New Wayne multiple blending grade pump to the general public.
While I was in the Sunoco zone,I also found something that is the perfect companion piece to this that I've been working on too and I'll post pics of that shortly.

Rick, i applaud your efforts. I too am a Sunoco nut! I can remember filling up at the "wishing well" outside of Pentwater MI during my childhood trips there.
I have gathered as much as I can. I have NOS blend pump bathroom keys (men and womens), credit cards (70 and 73) receipts, credit card holders, handy oilers with blend pumps, the promo radio, a "sunoco air" sign, oil bottle etc. and of course my pump.
Funny thing is, I don;t have a good shot of it. It was restored by a guy who bought 100 of them and does about one every 6 months with the best original parts from his stash.
I hope one day to here your pump ding......I wish mine did (its gutless)

As far as Chicago is concerned, does anybody know when we lost Sunoco as a gas brand? I saw this sign in the middle of what was an old neighborhood gas station on the 2700 block of south Lawndale in Chicago's Little Village neighborhood. The place is not a gas station anymore but the sign still looks pretty good. Just be careful if you go and look at it as the neighborhood is not that great. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Hi Frank,
Out in the far west suburbs of Chicago where I lived, Sunoco stations were never plentiful, but there were a few around. My best guesstimate is that they were all gone out there by 1980 or so.

I'm not sure when Sunoco disappeared as a gas station around here, but the Meijer superstores (for those that aren't familiar, it's like a Super Wal-Mart) in the Chicago Western Suburbs had Sunoco 260 during the summer months a couple years ago. Bill- I suspect that the Goodyear tire center on 31 just north past downtown Batavia was a Sunoco at one time.
Thanks for those pix John.
Got tired of having to wrestle this around when I wanted to work on it or just needed some elbow room w/the car,so I built a wooden pallet w/wheels that inserts up into the base.
My first design had thin plywood w/plastic wheels that all blew apart the minute I got them under the pump...oops!
I realized since I put the guts in,it now weighs 100's of lbs. more then I figured,so I married two 1-1/2" planks & upgraded to 500 lb. steel wheels w/4"lag bolts and all is well.

Neat stuff Rick
Jake
I found this nice companion piece for the pump.
A vintage Sunoco station island battery display cart.
I was excited to add it to my collection,as it still had the original 60's era applied advertising decal, and was in very good shape overall.
http://i838.photobucket.com/albums/zz310/bubblemug/sunocobatterycart007.jpg
http://i838.photobucket.com/albums/zz310/bubblemug/sunocobatterycart008.jpg
Take note of the side slots in the pic below to the left & right of the decal..
http://i838.photobucket.com/albums/zz310/bubblemug/sunocobatterycart009.jpg
I asked the seller if he had any batteries or anything else for it.He said,"No..but there was originally a cardboard advertising sign that slid in on top, right between those 2 slots"..He said it was parted away from this many years before he got it,but did believe it was out there somewhere in his vicinity.I thanked him, gave him my contact info should he come across it,and continued to search for it as the years went by.
I did eventually find a nice dry Vintage NOS 1940's display battery, that accents it quite well.

http://i838.photobucket.com/albums/zz310/bubblemug/sunocobatterycart003.jpg
I then continued to find alot of Sunoco related memorabila & use the cart to display them on,as they look good on it.

....Then I came across something advertised for sale on another site 2 months ago and new exactly what it was.The sign is dated October of 1958.I couldn't reach for my wallet fast enough.
The seller found it in near Albany N.Y.,so it's possible it could be the actual one parted from it years ago.
I met up with him @ Peotones' Oil&Gas last month and my search had finally ended.
Just a neat lil find.. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Rick, don't know if you watch that show on History channel. "American Pickers" 2 guys from the Midwest that go around the US treasure hunting. In last night's episode they found this guy in Fla that had an unbelievable, and I mean unbeleivable, stash of vintage and NOS gas pump/signs/garage stuff. You can probably catch it again, they re-run episodes all week. SULLY
Yep...Thanks Sully,caught it lastnight.
Many websites are buzzing about that too,& burning up the phone lines trying to contact him in Fla.
Phenomenal collection that guy has hoarded over the years.
Just reading back through this post. I notice you said the computer was dated April 70, but the pump was built in 63. So... I guess it isn't "numbers matchin"? Oh well, practically worthless now. I will be glad to do you a favor and take it off your hands. Can I have it?

I didn't have to work quite as hard as you secure my SUNOCO pump. I bought it from a SUNOCO service rep at Hershey several decades ago. It is an NOS pump that had never had fuel run through it. Still has the paint on the V belts that drive the pumps and the instruction tags attached. It came with a coaxial hose and nozzle as well as two spare complete upper doors with trim and glass.
