I recall as a young child looking through some pictures my aunt had. I have always had a passion for early 2nd gens since my dad had his 73 Camaro.

Anyway, I recall seeing a car with some names on it. So I asked her about it today and she brought out an album and it had 2 pictures of the car.
She used to date the son of the man that races it. It was Candy Apple red with a red plixi glass hood scoop like the one on the #1 ZL1.
In the picture it has the Harrell logo on the doors but gold tape over the name. It also has what appears to be the gold Kelsey-Hayes wheels on it.
I will post pics as soon as I get them scanned.
I was just curious as to if anyone knew of the car either then or now.

I am not sure they are the same cars. This one was raced in Illinois and I think Kim's was in SC

That picture, I think would have been after Fred had sold the car. The reason I say this is several things are different on it. The intake ,valve covers ,master cyl, rad hose and looks like the carbs are Holley carbs. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif P.S. could get copies of these pictures?

Jacob,

I live about 45 minutes North of you. Do you have any idea where those pictures were taken? The 'Muskrat' in the background, and the surroundings, look very familiar. Just wondering if it was the old White Hall Dragway.

Kim, Where has the car resided the past thirty plus years?

Dennis

Hi Dennis, What I know is the car was sold to a Guy in Meredosia Ill. Which is 6 miles from my father-in-laws. the next owner was Lonnie Dawson ,then Joe Grower ,then Terry Childers Then Bill Porterfield who I bought it from. 4-16-94.

Then it's possible the shots were taken at White Hall. Meredosia is located between Beardstown and White Hall, closer to Brdstn. Lonnie and Jim Dawson were regulars at both strips. In the late '60's/early '70's Jim drove a 427 '69 Camaro sponsored by the "Rod 'n Gun Tavern" in Beardstown. If I remember correctly they ran a used car lot in Meredosia. I think they even had a flatbed hauler like the one in the background. I need to pick some brains locally.

Wel, back in those days there were a few in the area. White Hall, Beardstown, Alton etc.

I grew up in Jerseyville and go to the Jacksonville cruises almost every year.

I am familiar with White Hall, Roodhouse. I recall being in a garage in Roodhouse on the West side of the tracks and he had a front clip of a 69 camaro hanging in it

The first time I saw the 69 ZL-1 was at Beardstown They ran Tommy Johnson Sr, Tommy Had his Green 69 Camaro then. We had a Small Block Tunnel Rammed Rail then. What a piece of Sh&t. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/haha.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/haha.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Sam, I wasn't smart enough to know I was watching history being made!! It was just another weekend at the track having fun. Heck I was At E-Town in 91,92 or 93 when Kenny B Broke the 300 mph barrier. Standing with a camera didn't take a picture then. I was also at Topeka when Chuck E broke the 300 in Funny car, again no picture. DUH http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/haha.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/haha.gif

The time at topeka John Force had 25,000 up for the first to break the 300 barrier. Force was just before Chuck and sombody on his crew screwed up and they were backed out of staging. Force got out threw his helmet!! And than stood on the line and watched Chuck break the barrier .

Well, You are smart enough to remember all that! I saw Grump run the first 9 second Pro Stock run at Maple Grove. I loved that. The air was perfect that nite. Saw Bob Palmer in Charlie Hills Bad Habit AA/FA Fiat run the first 6 second run in history at the Grove also. WOW, That was unbelievable in the early 70's. That guy was just crazy! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif

First 9 second pass at Maple Grove for a Pro Stocker. I was there! Used to watch Brooklyn Heavy run at Cecil County in the winter snow bird meets. He used to bring 2-3 cars always. circa 1970. Had his 68 Pro Stock camaro and his 66 chevelle that he drove running B/MP. Saw that Harrell car run also at the County. Man...they were the days. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burnout.gif

I work on Friday. I will have to see if I can take a vacation day. My friday route usually sucks so it would be nice to get off. I will see if I can get my aunt to get some copies made. Those are the only 2 she has.
I think I will see if my dad wants to go. Look for this mug.

Jacob, Unless you'd like to be the MOST POPULAR PARTICIPANT on Thursday night, I'd recommend leaving your "Work Truck" at home! (However, you might become the Salesman of the Month, and Howie's best friend if you DID bring it! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif)

We'll keep an eye out for you and the car. Hope you can make it. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

I just talked to my aunt tonight to see if she could find the pics and get copies made. She said the guy also raced at Virginia, IL also. What was the name of the people you got it from in Meredosia?

ORIGLS6
08-30-2006, 05:58 AM
Virginia. IL? Maybe she meant Havana, a few miles North of Virginia. That 1/8 mile strip is still in operation.

See if she remembers the names Jim & Lonnie Dawson.
