I owned my first muscle car in 1982. Just after high school. It was a 1970 Chevelle. 396/375hp car. I loved that car. I only owned the car for a year, but told myself I would own another muscle car someday. Fast forward to 2003. With 40 approaching soon, I knew it was now or never for me!!! Time to buy myself another car. After a lot of consideration. I decided on a Buick GSX. 510ft lbs of torque with the Stage 1 455. Its reputation understood only by those who knew of its performance. This was the car for me. Only 178 of them made in Apollo White for 1970. 678 total. The others being built in Saturn Yellow. My next step was to find one! Easier said than done. I decided to call my uncle in Florida. He being a Buick nut, he could surely find me one. Yeah right!!! He knew of none for sale, but promised to keep his eye open. I posted in the "Cars Wanted" section here on Yenko.net and also over at V8Buick. No luck. After desperately searching for over a year for the right car, my uncle called. "I found your GSX" he said. He told me the car was in the Nashville Tennessee area. Apollo White, stage 1 loaded car possibly for sale. He gave me the phone number of the owner and said "Don't wait to long to call this guy". After speaking to the owner over the phone and listening to his description of this completely numbers matching car, I hopped on a plane to Nashville. The car blew me away. The car spent most of its life in the south. Never exposed to the elements. The owner prior to me bought the car in 1987 and did a complete restoration. The car won a Senior with the Buick Club of America and with the Antique Automobile Club of America in the early 90's. The car is equipped with air-conditioning, power steering, power brakes, AM/FM radio, tinted glass and drives incredibly nice. Buick really got this car right when they wanted a piece of the muscle car market back in 1970. However, with poor advertising and being a little late to the market, not many were built and sold. Oh!! By the way. When I first called my uncle, he had no leads on a Buick GSX. But he did sell me his Hemi-Challenger. Which I love as much as the Buick. The 455 stage 1 Buick and the Hemi-Challenger, challenge each other every year at the F.A.S.T drags duking it out for top honors. So now I can get satisfaction arguing with myself over which one is faster. The Stage 1 or the Hemi. If I had to answer. I know I would change my mind each time I was asked. Thanks, Patrick

Nice car, Patrick. No shortage of torque in that garage, from the looks of it.

I assume your referring to the GSX. This car has been in New York for around 2 months now. Never been to Westchester County. I know their is one down that way. A pretty nice one way to say the least!! I showed have mentioned in the description that about 65% of these cars came with the Stage I motor. The others came with the standard 455.

The Challenger is 1 of 287 Hemi-Challengers made in 1970. Far fewer than Hemi-Cudas. It was ordered by a Dodge Salesman who worked at Vissings Dodge in Jeffersonville, Indiana. He raced NHRA Division III at Indianapolis Raceway Park and Bowling Green Raceway. It is FE5 Red, black interior and ordered Stripe and radio delete. 4.10 rear automatic car. 29,000 mile car. Spent most of its life in Texas and Florida. It is "One" of "Two" documented Hemi-Challengers that left the factory with a T/A hood. The other car no-longer exsists. This information I got Galen Govier. Also ordered with front and rear spoilers. Car has paperwork and letters from both the original owner and selling dealer detailing its race history. Raced against some Sox & Martin sponsored cars and a Glidden Mustang. Car has been in my family for over 20 years! Patrick

Your GSX has a twin sister in Westchester. White/Back, auto car but I cannot remember if it is on the column or tree. You have some rare breeds! Where in NY are you?

I'm in Ulster County. Not far from you. I'll get pictures and some details of the Challenger to Belair. He asked me late last year, just never got around to it. Thanks for all the nice words... Patrick

In the upcoming August edition of "Hemmings Muscle Cars", there is an article on Brad Conleys "GSX Prototype car". Page 58 I believe. "My Classic Car" will also be doing a feature on his car to be shown next spring. His prototype car is awesome!!! Patrick

You can see a picture of the Prototype car on the homepage of www.V8Buick.Com (http://www.V8Buick.Com) Its not a really good picture though. The car I believe is about 200lbs. heavier than a normal GSX. I believe it's because of the fiberglass hood. Larger front spoiler in white (black on a reguler GSX). The rear spoiler is a little different too. The prototype car has a two tone interior, wild combination of White and Orange. I heard the guys from "My Classic Car" really enjoyed shooting the car at the Buick Nationals last month. The feature will be in the spring of next year. I've also been told there is a documented "Baldwin" or "Motion" GSX getting restored down south right now. I really don't know much about the Motion cars so I may be wrong on what it is exactly. Those names were mentioned. Brad Conley who owns the GSX prototype and John Chamberlain who I believe owns a Prototype GS or something rare like that will also be in that Hemmings magazine I believe. These guys are considered top dog Buick gurus. Patrick

Yes there is a Motion GSX being restored in the south. I do not many details on the car, but PM I'll direct you to the right person.

This is Brads prototype car. It will be featured in the August edition of "Hemmings". Theres a "Buick Muscle Car" buyers guide that has a lot of great history on the Buicks. They do a good job covering the 60's Buicks, the GS and 70, 71 and 72 GSX. Also goes into great detail on the Stage I 455. Patrick

Interesting footnote to the Hemmings article, there were 2 proto-types, and both were sold new in Columbus. Len Inmke, who started the Arthritis Foundation show here, collected Buicks the way that Bob McDorman collected Chevy's. He bought both cars for his collection, and they both got sold when he was out of town. Needless to say, he was more than slightly peeved. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif The rest is car history.

------I knew Len Immke and he did more than collect Buicks. He kept a small circle of restorers busy on just about anything and everything with 4 wheels. Bob Adams, Leo Gephart, and Dick Garbitt were some of his favorite dealers to do business with. We even sold him a full tilt, new AMG-500SL grey-market car in all red (ugly car) for his sons birthday. A buddy of mine restored an absolutely gorgeous 1949 Hudson twin-H drop-top for him along with many others. He was famous for gigantic multiple trades, sometimes involving 20 to 30 cars. He also was the behind the scenes guy in the Wendys restraunt chain. TV Dave was the up front guy. Len actually made way more money with Wendys than he ever did with the Buick dealer, although it was the worlds biggest Buick dealer..........Bill S

--------All that and he was deathly afraid of flying. Went everywhere in a bus/motorhome!!!!!!

Two incredible cars you have there Patrick!
Years ago I raced one of those Buicks at Atco Raceway here in NJ, I could not believe how fast that thing was. It made me a believer http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif
Good Luck with them both..

This Thursday morning @ 8:30AM, on "My Classic Car" there is a 30 second spot on one of Mark Reeves Stage 1 GSX's. He also owns the documented Motion X. He has been restoring rare buicks for 6-8 years now I believe. He's scheduled to do mine starting this winter. Patrick
