View Full Version : Anybody thinking about buying a new ZO6 Corvette?

I have the chance to buy one of the 5 ZO6 Corvettes they are bringing into England (out of 25 for Europe). I got stumped on the Ford GT, so I don't want to miss out on this one without cause. Thoughts? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

I believe Sandlin has had one ordered for about 2 years now! LOL!!

Seriously, if I even thought I was close to being able to swing it I'd be ALL OVER IT...those things are gonna be ANIMALS...

You may not want to hear this but the new 39,000.00 dollar Shelby GT500 Mustangs may give the new ZO6 a run for the money...Hey GM, you listening?

No true GM person would even give that a second thought. The General may be down but never out.

Now that I said that, I sure hope they get their stuff together, that way I don't have to start supporting dad. 32 years retired GM and they are talking cutting retirement benefits.

I have been in and driven a 2005 Mustang a few times now. Our family friend has one. I think the car is heavy and throttle response is just terrible (we're talking about auto car). If the baseline car will lend its as a basis for what a higher performance model will be, I would run from the Mustang. The Corvette on the other hand is welcomed in my garage any day of the week...

'64 Mustangs probably received the same scorn from car guys back then. Think of a 260/2bbl/auto '64 and how anemic it was in the acceleration and cornering department. It really wasn't until Shelby went to work on them that the early Mustang got any respect from the hard-core car guys of the day. Shelby himself still calls the '64-'66 Mustang a "secretary's car."

Overall, I think Ford's done the best that they could with the new Mustang. I'll see one going down the street and look at it and think, "Yeah, Ford did it right." Even the clean-looking V6 car catches my eye. The new Shelby version will hopefully be a real tire-fryer.

The Corvette will always be in a class by itself, much the same way the new Ford GT is. Comparison with the Mustang is to be expected but the Corvette is basically alone in my book. If GM does reincarnate the F-body with the same success that Ford has had with the '05 Mustang then we'll really have something worth talking about.

I ordered thru Bill Wertheim at Paddock Chevrolet several months ago. With a base window sticker of $68K, I would hope the new Z06 performance/handling isn't threatened by the new Mustang. We'll know in October...

No friggin' way...the Mustang is giving up WAY to much weight, and while you can slap on a supercharger you still have to tune it, but you don't have to tune weight...it's free horsepower, all the time, not dependant on the weather, rpm, gearing, etc. The 'Vette also has a MUCH better front/rear weight bias, lower CG, etc., etc., etc...the list goes on and on. While that sounds like a knock on the Mustang, it's not, 'cause I'm sure Ford will sell all they make, but it and the ZO6 are aimed at entirely different markets. The Ford GT (40), on the other hand, was aimed dead at the General's flagship car, and had it dead in it's sights...but I think the whole "gajillion dollar markup followed by a total recall" fiasco is gonna take quite a bit of wind out of their sales...

Dave Hill said that this ZO6 is built to go after quarter million dollar exotics and the FORD GT. I doubt that they are worried about the new Shelby. Even if the 1/4 mile times are close, it's not all about the straight line performance. The ZO is a race car, not a drag car http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

You betcha. The Corvette will run away from the Mustang any time there's a corner involved....and if you have the need to go a bit faster...I'm sure that they'll be tons of aftermaket stuff available for the new Z06...superchagers, and on and on.

I visited my local Chevrolet dealer today, hoping to test drive a new Corvette, and they didn't have one vette on the lot out of a 100 cars or so. I was kind of bummed out, but I did test drive a brand new Chevy Silverado Z71 pickup, and I was impressed by how smooth it rode over some of the bumpy roads. Almost rides as nice as a Cadillac Deville.

I might be going back and buy that truck next Tuesday, before the Chevy employee's discount expires. 25k is a good price for a Z71 Silverado. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The large brakes bring an excellent level of stopping capability with the Z06, and with their four-wheel brake cooling, they provide excellent fade resistance and lining life during track duties.

The trailing edge of the front wheel opening is radiused to achieve improved drag, but protects the body finish with a tough molding, and a large air extractor is located behind the wheel

Jan Magnussen has won the 24 Hours of Le Mans at least twice so he's a bit more of a hot shoe than most of us. The Mercedes Benz McLaren SLR that ran the same time as the ZO6 is about $500k+ (Klaus Ludwig is no slouch either, having won a ton of endurance races). The Porsche Carrera GT that ran 7:28 is $500k (proves that Rally drivers are the best - Walter Rohrl is the Audi multi-world champion):

I can't even fathom how much fun that would be. My brother Gary...who has the Marina blue 1967 RS/SS 396 that was a Members Ride feature also has the 405HP version of the Z06 in Electron Blue...I've driven it twice...it's like two cars in one...a docile street car that gets relatively good MPG and performance...and then a balls to the wall race car when you want it to be.

Man, that blue is gorgeous! The red calipers and polished wheels really make it pop.

Bruce, has your brother taken the Camaro out to the Pavillions yet?

Rumor has it a new Z06 hit just shy of 200 mph...

Charley........I'm sure that is of no importance to you because you would never even think of exceeding the legal posted speed limit........would you.... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

He's taken it out a couple of times...not recently though. I think the last time it was out there was about a year ago...He's out of town quite a bit...

I definitely like his Z06 with the polished wheels too!

That picture of the electron blue C5 ZO6 sends chills down my spine! I've battled a few times with a couple fairly stock E-Blue ZO6's on street tires at Memphis quite a few times, and been stung plenty...the Yellow Submarine can usually pull 'em to about the 1000' mark, but then aerodynamics and weight (or lack of it for the ZO6) takes over and it's like those cars are shot out of a cannon...our ETs were usually close, but they'd put a couple MPH on me on the big end...reckon I'll just give a free pass to these monsters...!

This is "just" the C6 coupe, but it is still pretty bad a$$.

Check out C6 Ride & C6 Engine here:

It's from back in February in my nephew's C6.

With 500hp and that low weight the car will border on uncontrollable. The less than "gifted" guys that turn off the computer controls are going to get in trouble....real fast.
