J-Grind Cam

Hello Motion Buddy's! Just was wondering if anyone knows the cam spec's for the Motion J-grind cam? I haven't been on the site in awhile and i just read the post about the 67 chevelle 427 found and it talked about a J-grind cam! I'm a vintage chevy NUT! Love the 427's! I have a COPO 427 Clone! I was just looking in my old Motion catalog and it say for the 427 ZLX(550hp) and 454 ZLX(575hp) used the L88 cam with a .580 lift, but the full competition motors 427 ZLX(600hp) and the 454 ZLX(625hp) used a .600 plus lift camshaft... That would be too radical for the street. The grind numbers on the .580 cam are 3879605/3879652. I hope this will help. Mark

I do know the "J Grind" was a .600 plus lift cam. I will dig through some material and see if I can find better specs.

I got my info from my Motion catalog from 1975 and the only info was the full competition ZLX cam was a .600 plus lift. When installing this L88 cam....don`t forget to use a lot of WD40 on the install. I haven't come up with any specific specs yet,but I haven't gone thru all my notes yet ,other than being a high lift long duration cam--In the meantime, I threw a lifeline to JR to see if he can recall the specs--

I looked through a few things I have.. I think the "J" grind might have been the .625-626 lift cam. I have an article on a wildass '68 Motion SS427 L88 Chevelle and it saids it had the "J" cam but didn't list any specs. The "C" grind was .610 lift and is in the Ko-Motion Vette. Thats all I found but I only looked quick.

Motion did recommend a bigger cam to get maximum performance from the L/88 -- PHASEIII "S"model--.560/.580 lift--or PHASEIII "C" model--.585/.605 lift----(Competition Only "ROUGH" idle You should be running a 456 or an even better 488 with these cams---Charlie Mason was running a early L/88 CAM .540/.580 in the early days- -Then switched to a Motion J grind( which as someone mentioned was the letter signifying L/88 cam )--I would guess it was the same grind as KO-MOTION---PHASEIII "C" model of a J grind--Will check further----

Hey Thanks everyone, Woow, great info. I'm suprised to hear there were so many diffen't grinds! I just love hearing about the good old days! I wish i could have expereanced the hey days but i'm only 34! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif Does anyone know who was the camshaft grinder motion used? Crane? General Kinetics? ETC... just wondering!
