B4 I try the EBay route ...... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif
Up for sale is a VERY rare piece of Oldsmobile musclecar history. This is a 1970 Sherwood Green F85 W-31. This is one of 208 F85 W-31’s ever built, and one of approximately 20 that were delivered to Canada. Because this car was delivered to Canada, I also have the export documentation proving the heritage and authenticity of this very rare car. This is a REAL DEAL W-31 !! This is NOT a clone !
Besides being rare in it’s own right, this particular car is the one that has put the value and knowledge of W-31’s in the spotlight over the last 5-7 years. This is THE car. This car has been photographed and featured in more magazines than any other W-31 on the planet. You will also see many shots of this car in episodes of “American Musclecar” on Speed Vision as well as “My Classic Car”. This may sound conceited, but it is a fact.
The following is a partial list of the publications that this W-31 has been seen in:
Musclecar Enthusiast – December 2003
Hot Rod – October 2003
Chrome and Flames (German publication) – May 2003
Musclecar Review – May 2001
Musclecar Review – November 2001
Musclecar Review – September 2001 (#40 on the 50 Fastest list)
This car has dominated the Pure Stock Musclecar Drags, representing the fastest Oldsmobile and fastest small block car at the event for 3 straight years. It has gone thru the intensive Certified Stock voluntary tear-down process to insure that it is truly “Pure Stock”. This car was also the winner of the Musclecar Review Magazine “Small Block Shootout”, featured in the May 2001 issue. A lot of time, money, sweat, and tears were expelled to get this car to that level of performance. To date, it has run a best of 12.82 @ 107.95 in the quarter mile. Keeping in mind that this is on stock, repro Firestone Wide-Oval tires. An amazing feat to say the least.
The W-31 was the 325 HP small block screamer in the Olds fleet from 1968 thru 1970. This particular car is equipped with the potent W-31, coupled to a full manual valve body (standard pattern) Turbo-HydraMatic 350 transmission. Absolutely NO expense was spared in the building of the engine or transmission. The original “TO” coded 3.91 Olds “O” axle is underneath the rear. Currently the gear set is a 4.66, which is what has propelled the car to the times above. I will gladly swap in the 3.91 gear set if the winning bidder is so inclined. This engine has all of the original W-31 parts – from carb to oil pan. It has the highly sought after 7040255 Qjet, restored by the Holley Restoration Shop and tuned by myself. It also has the 1111975 points distributor, also tuned by yours truly. The factory aluminum W-350 intake is uncut, unported, and otherwise unmolested. The #6 heads were treated to a complete and thorough valve job, all within the rules of the Pure Stock Musclecar Drags. The #1 and #4 exhaust manifolds are also uncut and unmolested. They are connected to a full 2.5” mandrel bent exhaust system, equipped with an “X” pipe and Straightline Performance mufflers. This is NOT a numbers matching engine and trans. The original engine was blown up long before I owned the car. However, EVERY effort has been expended to insure the authenticity of this proper W-31 build. The transmission even has the proper “JO” coded servo.
The rear suspension is setup with polyurethane bushings to prevent flex and wheelhop. Original boxed control arms with support brackets to the upper arms are intact and uncut. The support brackets are unique to the W-30 and W-31 cars to prevent flex.
The interior on this car is as original as it gets. To complement the Sherwood Green exterior with white stripes is a green, bench seat interior. As with all F85’s, this is about as Spartan an interior as one can get. Straight, original, vinyl seats. Straight (no rear armrests) vinyl door panels. Also original. Original dash, with no cutouts or blockoffs for the A/C ducts. It does come with the factory Rallye Pac. (Tach and gauges). I have tastefully hooked up aftermarket temperature and oil pressure gauges underneath the dash to monitor the engine vitals for racing. NOTHING was cut to install the gauges. The car originally came with an AM radio. Currently, it has an original AM/FM (that works !). Also, strangely enough, one of the options on the car was carpet instead of a rubber floor mat. For racing purposes, carpet is actually LIGHTER than the rubber mat.
The exterior of the car is as straight as it gets. Prep and paint work were done by the expert hands of Mark Wray out of British Columbia. Mark’s work has been seen and admired by the most discriminating Olds people in the country. His work is the best – BAR NONE ! There are two chips on the car. One is the lower, rear edge of the drivers door. (From me, the idiot owner, that tagged the fender of my enclosed trailer getting in). The other one is on the edge of the passengers fender, at the top, leading into the engine compartment. This unfortunate incident happened during one of the engine installations. Again, my fault. Not too bad for a car that is driven, raced and enjoyed like they were intended. The car also features the very popular rear wing. The wing did not come on the car originally, but considering the plain jane-ness of it, it adds a nice touch to the overall appearance, in my opinion. Also worth note are the proper, and original “XT” coded 14x7 heavy duty steel wheels. The front Firestone G70-14 Wide Ovals are BRAND NEW, and the rears have plenty of tread left. The front and rear bumpers are also original and SUPER nice (no cutouts for the rear, as this is an F85). The frame and underneath of the car are super clean. Absolutely NO evidence of crust or rust.
Why am I selling ?
When I originally purchased this car, my intent was to bring education and notice to one of the most overlooked musclecars of the era. Everyone knew what a W-30 was, but virtually no one knew what a W-31 was. This car has changed that. Over the last few years, it has provided an “awakening” of sorts. With its’ admirable performance at the Pure Stock Drags, and magazine and TV coverage, the tables have turned. The W-31 nameplate is now one to reckoned with – up there with the LT1 Chevy, the 350HO Pontiac, and others. Other interests have made me make the decision to part with it. Not because I don’t still love the car, but because I’ve achieved what I’ve wanted with it.
