Was just reading this item (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1966-69-BBC-Engine-Lift-Bracket_W0QQitemZ7996559459QQcategoryZ50459QQrdZ1Q QcmdZViewItem) on Ebay. Were there different lift hooks between the cast iron intake and the aluminum one? Appreciate it.
No.
The BB cast & Al. intakes shared the same pull hook.
Their color shade was what was different, depending on the intake and assembly plant & time period.
1970 did use an all new design numbered hook, with a smaller hole added to it.

Good to know I'm not losing it, thanks Rick.

Hi Rick,
Do you have part numbers for the two (front and rear) engine lift hooks for 1970 big blocks?
Thanks,
-Sam

I made some duplicate brackets from our originals. I'll have to try them on one of our old cast intakes to see how they fit. There are similar small block front brackets that definitely don't fit.

Good seeing you again Sam. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Thanks Rick, it was great to see you at SCR8, along with all the cool memorabilia you brought along! I really like those Chevrolet Sports Department signs..
Excuse my ignorance, but is there a different rear lift bracket on a 1970 big block? My L78 did not have one front or rear, we used accessory bolt holes to hoist the engine out..

So I got a set of engine lift brackets off eBay for my L78, and it's easy to see how to mount the front one, on the front two driver side inlet manifold bolts.
But where does that rear one mount, and at what angle? Is it the inboard accessory bolt hole in the back of the passenger head? Does the tab stick straight up?

It goes on the back of the head Sam. This picture should help.

While the topic is still fresh, is there a part number or symbol stamped on the rear hook for a 1970 L78?
Thanks!

Nils, mine was plain as day! I bought it off ebay paired with a front lift which was stamped with the part number listed above..

Thanks Sam!
When I bought the car it only had the numbered front hook but I have three rear hooks laying around. One plain, one with an "L" and one with a "M" in a circle. I just wanted to figure out which is correct.

On a somewhat related topic, somebody asked me what the purpose of that small hole was,on the 1970 BB engine lift hook.
I explained it to them, but they still didn't quite understand.
So I relayed the 1970 Orange Book explanation to them, and thought I would repeat it here.

New for 1970 was this Fuel Filter support rod,#3967498.
It was supposed to be used on the 1970 454 Chevrolet Passenger & Camaro 402 & Nova 402 vehicles w/Vapor Bypass..It saw only one year of useage, before being discontinued the following model year.I have only witnessed it on 1970 Passenger vehicles myself.

Mine was the same as the '69; back of the passenger head, and it's a straight piece.
Rick,
What does the dog eared rear bracket fit? (45 degree cuts on the top corners)I have a few of those somewhere in a tool box. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Funny How this thread popped up as I was gonna post tonight to ask:
What color is correct for the 1969 L-78 BB front and rear lift hooks? I have seen them in Chevy Orange and in Cast color.

Bare steel is correct but good luck with rust issues. I use cast blast paint and that has been accepted at judged events.
Orange was only on painted intake cars. They certainly didn't take the time to mask it off on the assembly line. Remember, "The General" was VERY frugal with time and effort!

The front engine lift hooks on our COPO Chevelle and that of a friend appear silver in the old original photos that we took.

I won't argue that the overwhelming majority of them were natural or silver, but like most everything we discuss pertaining to the General, there's two words we might want to avoid: ALWAYS and NEVER!

Are the plug wires on the LS6 originals?
There was a discussion in the last few days about the lightning bolt vs the Oval Packard Logo

No, they're repros. Also, the rear engine lift bracket is incorrect. That's an old picture and I've since replaced it with the right piece. Too many years of parts in the tool box!
That's the bracket I asked Rick about. I saw a similar one on a '68 L78 Nova but couldn't find the owner to ask about it. If you look closely (easy to do with Chuck's picture) you can see a dogleg bend in the bracket. That's the same as the one on the Nova.
