Went to a auction today at a farm I used to work at. They were selling off old tractors to fund upkeep on a museum they have. Bought a 1930 vintage John Deere and a older steam engine that is apart. They both run just as good as my Yale did. http://www.yenko.net/attachments/159175-IMG_0964.JPG

I'm also into old tractors. My dad and I was at the Canfield Ohio Fair the day before that tractor blew up killing all those people. Our local club invited some members of a club up in that area last year and on the subject they said rivets and pieces of metal were stuck into buildings, cars and parking lots 1/2 mile away from the blast. (The owner let the water level get too low in the tractor that blew up btw)
I was at a show several weeks back and the 80 year old owner of a steam tractor was training a younger guy to run the tractor. The 80 year old was on the ground and the younger guy asked him which way to pull the leaver and the older guy said "I always forget myself-push it forward and see what happens" Needless to say I got out of there in a hurry.

Restored a 1941 Ford 9N several years ago. Made in October 28 1941. Sold it to buy acreage. Now have a 1957 New Holland Super Hayliner 68 baler I'm going to restore. Always stored with little rust. Very easy resto..and cheap too. I paid $350 for the baler and other than several new bearings, sandblast sand, few gallons of paint and new tires will have no other money involved.

I think the flywheel may be a drive pulley for a leather belt to run implements...this was before PTO's !! Not sure about an old Deere though....Whitetop...water heated under pressure beyond 212F creates steam that is useable...as long as it remains under pressure it can be controlled and used....when it's not under pressure it boils at 212 F...boiling point goes up as pressure goes up.....when you take 250 degree water under pressure and realease the pressure thtu a break in the boiler...ALL the water turns to steam NOW with bomb-like results. Imagine piloting a steam engine back then with that huge boiler in front of you...there were no ooops when it came to low water level ! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/scholar.gif

Schonyenko2
09-24-2005, 05:54 AM
If I remember correctly there is a compression petcock on the back side of that flywheel, or there abouts. You open the petcock to get it on the compression stroke by turning that flywheel. That's how you start it. Most everything else, Farmall, Allis Challmbers etc, had hand cranks out the front that when they kicked back, broke your wrist. Jezz, somebody wake up moparts. He's a Deere dealer I think. We just built those big red axial flow combines,
And Bob, it's a petcock, not a pet cock. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/BelairSucks.gif

Salvatore

We had an old John Deere on the farm in the 50's and my dad used to grind corn off the flywheel for the animals. Hooked about a 30' belt to the flywheel and to the corn grinder. A lot of dust and noise. Man....The good old days!

09-24-2005, 06:18 AM
I'm not a Deere expert, but most belt pulleys were seprate from the fly wheel as you had to throw them in, and out of gear. The one on our Farmall M ran off the PTO lever and you kicked the clutch to engage, or disengage. That Deere has a hand clutch, and I think the used a seprate wider pulley that should mount on the side of the frame.
Bob, studies show 90% of the male population indulges in masturbation, and the remaining 10% are liers.

Belair62
09-24-2005, 06:47 AM
Don't interupt me dammit..I was talking to Rosy Palm......the Allis Chalmers has a belt pulley on the frame...you have to loosen a lock bolt and pull the pulley out about 3 inches to engage it and then run the PTO...pretty weird deal..
