The guy I bought my SS396 Chevelle from, Johan Gustafsson, kept the Chevrolet iron block engine that he used in the Chevelle. He also kept the aluminum heads, rods and pistons but put a new crank in it. Then he topped it off with a blower, and put it in the used Pro modified doorslammer he bought last year.

The question is: How much horsepower can you make with an ordinary Chevrolet 454 4-bolt iron block ?
He cracked the block, I might add.

I had a 30 over 454 with heavily worked oval port heads and a wild roller cam that dyno'd at 603 horse..that was pretty good 10 years ago. Gotta be low compared to others though.

Our funny car has a mild 454 with a vintage intake & blower, and it made some pretty decent power...http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

Yes Rob, that Harrell car of yours is awesome !
Are you using a factory 454 Chevrolet block, not an aftermarket one ?

I had mine in a 65 Biscayne 4 speed ! Had to put a nodular iron case St-10....it was pretty cool on the street...no nitrous...built by a local legendary street racer and engine builder...I asked him for the cam card...he tore off a piece of paper on his desk and wrote down the lift and the valve adjustment...handed it to me and said "here is your cam card" guess it was his own special grind !

I know that back when it was NSCA vs NMCA,the NSCA drag radial class required production line engine blocks and cylinder heads.Troy Perez with his 3600# nova with a stock block 440 incher with 990 heads on it ran low 8's with crazy mph{over 165}.Later the rules changed and allowed better heads, and he built a 510 inch short block out of a stock block, but had traction issues with the big motor, and had a hard time dipping into the 7's with any consistency. He swapped the 440 inch shortblock back in with the new heads and went right into the 7.90's at just a tick under 3600#{he was 200# over the minimum weight}.He also was making mad MPH because he was doing it on 275MM radials{the class allowed 315mm but they didnt fit his stock chassis car}.To go 168 mph at 3600# required the better part of 1600 hp.He may have had a 2 bolt block with splayed caps thought.
As for me,I push just under 1000 hp out of a stock 2 bolt block with just main studs, and if my 3550# tank ever runs faster then 9.0 on raidals I will be very surprised{it has gone some 9.20's}.
