View Full Version : ebay rant

Here's a piece of information that should be posted somewhere for ebay users who list vehicles for sale.

1) Rare only applies if it is rare, and doesn't get you more money if nobody cares how rare your 4 door LTD wagon is, so don't call it rare.
Simply being old does not make it rare.
Simply being rare does not make it valuable.
If the reason you think it is rare is because you don't see many anymore, perhaps its because the model in question was so useless and ugly that they were all squished.

2) "Muscle car" is not a generic term that can be applied to any 60's and 70's 2 door car. ie: a 1966 chevelle with a 283 and a 2spd auto is not a "muscle car", neither is a 318 Charger.

3) "Numbers match" does not add more value to a car with a non-performance driveline, or a car that has no driveline based importance or significance.
A 1965 valiant with a "numbers match" 6 cyl does not make it worth more than any 1965 valiant with or without an engine.

4)"Survivor" does not mean it simply survived.

5)Don't picture your car with some flashy wheels and tires if they don't come with it. You might as well just say you are trying to decieve people.

6)If your car is a 1966, put it in the 1966 listings.
Do not add.. "not a 1964,65,67,68,69" to the listing and making the listing pop up in wrong year listings.
This makes most people want to slap you upside the head.
If I'm looking for a 1970 Camaro, I don't want to see your 1972 Matador.

7) If your car is not a Hemi car, and/or does not have a Hemi in it do not put Hemi in the title.
Same applies to Yenko, Nickey,Harrell, etc.
A 1968 Suburban with a Nickey sticker on the fender does not make it a collectors item.

End of rant.

And a damned good rant that was! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Couldn't agree more.

Unfortunately, P.T. Barnum was right. As long as people continue to fall for that kind of nonsense, other people will continue to do it, and profit from it.

You forgot one,
<<If your camaro was professionally restored it should NOT have that damn FORD CAUTION FAN STICKER>>
So please remove it or people will figure your restoration shop was run by a bunch of idiots and frigged up the rest of the car while giving you the screwing of a lifetime because you are too stupid to realize what parts should or shouldnt be on your car and basically you deserved the screwing you got as there is no way somebody that stupid could possibly have the kind of money it would take to have the car professionally restored in the first place. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Also,
<<Matching Numbers Car>>
This means the car has all the original parts it left the factory with, it does NOT mean your registration numbers match the vin numbers, the little chrome SS or 350 trims match each other or the price your selling it for matches the tach numbers. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

Easiest trick is to open up a new Outlook mail message and start typing in your text. It will do all the spell checking for you. Then when you're done, copy & paste it into your e-bay auction (or forum message).

Funny, Here is an actual Plumbing invoice I just sent out written up by my secretary...
1. Master Bath: Removed dripping 4" ballcock as it could no longer fill unit in proper fashion and replaced with new power flow 9" ballcock.
2. Kitchen: Shut down and removed instant hot creator and installed new cock hole cover to keep fluids from dripping into lower unit.

Another one to add to the list:

If you are trying to sell a good part, then do a little bit of clean up on it (spray it off with a hose and wipe it down). Otherwise, the dirt & dust tells me that you are just trying to hide some defect.

That 427 on ebay is a prime example.
The engine has absolutely NO significance of any type,(its a 396 with a 427 crank, which he points out is a "real" 427 crank as opposed to what.. a fake one?, who cares? a 396 or a 427 steel crank..other than possibly a p/n they are the same anyway..) yet he's got so many "buzz" words he has a whole paragraph devoted to them.

To me this is at least decieving, and borders on fraudulent. There is no other reason to put in all the terms which have NOTHING to do with what he is selling.

These ads are meant to pray upon people who may not be as "swift" or "savy" to this stuff as others my be.

Some may figure this as a marketing tool to get their ad seen, but the reality is that ebay has search tools and hundreds of sub-sections to help narrow down searches, then guys like this bung it all up for the intelligent users, and at the same time provide a means of ripping off the less informed.

It's pure marketing. We all know that a vast majority of commercial advertizing is deceptive to some degree. Marketers have to carefully deceive people into parting with their hard-earned money. Most of the time it's basically harmless: "Better eat your Wheaties." Or else what? What happens if I don't eat my Wheaties? Well, nothing, the Wheaties people would just like you to buy Wheaties.

There's almost always some amount of "snake oil" involved in a sales pitch. It's up to the buyer to know snake oil when he sees or hears it. EBay is just another marketplace where snake oil flourishes, much as it does on a new car lot. If you don't know your way around then the sales people will take as much money from you as they can get.

The line between good marketing and pure bull___t is usually very blurry. EBay just brings it all into our homes and puts it 18 inches in front of our faces--uncomfortably close for most people.

Add one more. When listing your creampuff on ebay please take your pictures in the DAYTIME.I've seen so many pictures taken at night with no flash or in a garage with a single 5 watt lightbulb surrounded by cardboard boxes with 15 years of accumulated nicnacs and garbage. When looking on ebay at your mint 10k original mile Impala SS I don't really give a s**t about the beautiful Montana sunset in the background. And then telling me how mint the engine compartment is while the photo shows the hood up and I'm looking into a black abyss.Other then living in Fairbanks Alaska in mid December I don't see what the problem is.

I just got back from a 10 hour round trip to turn down a Z28 that I bid on and won off of ebay last week. Supposed to be rust-free my buddy who went with figured that the must have meant that if I bought the car I got the rust for free! The first thing I did was remove the rear quarter vent and took a look-full of black silicone and undercoating. Bottoms of doors were rusty and rs header was held together by bubbling bondo. But the guy has the balls to call it rust free?????? I am real glad I did not make a down payment using paypal because all I was out was a day of work and $100 worth of fuel. I am done buying cars on ebay-3 out of 6 that I have bought were totally misrepresented.

I have bought numerous cars off eBay and have never been disappointed. I have several rules that I follow.

1. Talk on the phone with the seller. Ask them to nit pick the car. have them walk around the car and describe the smallest item. Tell them that you are planning on coming to see it or have it inspected even if you are not.

2. Ask for very specific photos of known problem areas for the type of car you are looking at.

3. Ask for photos of the body(paint) with reflections in it so you can see that the paint and body are flat.

4. Get photos of the areas that most people don't take the time to fix right (under dash, door hinges, pinch welds by rear dog legs and rockers, back side of rockers.

5. Make sure that the photos are of good quality, not necessarily high resolution because your computer screen can't display anything too high anyway. Good lighting some in sun and some in the shade (not dark).

If you don't get what you ask for ask again, if your still not satisfied PASS!!!!!

It always works for me.

The guy had listed completely rust free in the ebay ad-I asked him via email if it was original rust free-as it had 53000 miles on it and had been stored for 20+ years-and he of course said that it was rust free. I did not talk to him on the phone-probably should in the future.

70CitrusZ

I would be seriously pissed at anyone who called a car rust-free, and it had any rust whatsoever on it.

To top it off, "rust free" isn't a label to apply to a total rustbucket that has had all its pans replaced with taiwan tin either...call it what it is, "rust has been REPAIRED"..
Rust free means just that...no rust ever, anywhere (excepting thin aurface rust, no pitting)
He deserved a royal reaming, and a verbal lesson in wasting someone's time and money.
I'd have no hesitation in telling him how I felt right then and there. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif
