Well, I finally started taking the engine apart to see what damage there was. I pulled the intake and found one broken push rod on the #6 cylinder. I then started removing spark plugs. The electrode on the #6 one looked like it had been hit by something. I decided to remove the head from that side. Here is what I found. The engine is still in the car since I didn't have anyone here to help me remove the hood.

Yikes! Looks like it was rotting out from the inside but there might have been something like a coolant leak into that cylinder that caused it to hydrolock and blow out the cylinder wall? I saw someone else do that to a small block this summer, but that was a 900+ hp race motor so you can't compare what happened or why it happened. Time for a new motor! I say stick with a 427 and make it look like a 396.

They must have whispered it cause I didn't hear them. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I think I'm going to build another 427. I have always been partial to the 427s. Maybe I'll built the only 68 Beaumont COPO in existance. Numbers matching of course. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif Anybody got Bain's number???? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

The previous owner of my old Harrell Camaro told me stories of the many times it had seen 10K RPMs! 8000 is very do able. It is when you let off of the 427s that you have problems.

I hope it doesn't too. This is the engine that was in the car when I bought it. I have never been happy with it's performance and planned to rebuilt or replace it this winter. Looks like I'll get an early start on it.

My sediments exactly.Bought this car used and one never knows what they are truly getting.Motor ran great until this so now it's time to build a killer roller-cam 302...if the motor is salvageable that is.

If not, here comes that monster crate motor (that aluminum head Bill Mitchell 427 small block is starting to look real good! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif)to rip up the pavement until I figure which side is up on this whole 302 thing.

Thanks Bud, There are a couple engines on Ebay that I'm watching. One of them is a LS-6. I'm not sure if it's the one you mentioned.

How about...
web page (http://www.sdpc2000.com/catalog/3449/GM-Performance-Parts-ZZ572-Crate-Engines.htm)

I know it's a little pricey, but I think it might be fun.
