If I was you Sam, I would slide that original #'s matching 302 back in your Z. Since you are totally dismantling the car for the restoration, and I am sure you will be fully detailing it in every way, it would be a great time to make that Z of yours 100% numbers matching again. Of course this is JMO.

Im putting them up as I get them, Im hoping the body is in good shape..Ive had the car since 1981 and it has never been wet so Im keeping my fingers crossed..Not sure of any history with the car other than I bought it out in Newtown Square Pa. off of a cop who got it off of a kid who was killed in an accident. (Not in the car)...If anyone knows or think they know about this let me know...I have an old title so I can verify anything you can find..

10-08-2005, 06:26 AM
Hi Sam, plans have changed a little, I'm having some health issues taken care of, so I have a little extra time to work on the Camaros. Decided the mule needs a new set of clothes first, so I am tearing the trim off to be sent out this month for much needed paint and body work. I hope to have it back for next seasons cruise nights. The SS will be next with the completion of the body brace. Then next spring when the weather warms it will be time for a dip http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif With my Friends orange Z clone, yours, Jeff Hs Z and mine, there will be a lot of orange in the parking lot. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Hugger Orange http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif I found original paint on the A pillers, that way we can get the hue just right! BTW, original hugger orange does NOT match Chevy orange engine paint. My friend, who is really talented, is going to take it all winter and do the body work and misc patching and paint in the spring. Then depending on how long it takes me to put the trim back on will determine which cruise night I make. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

As to health, its serious, but OK. Kidney and prostate cancer, both caught early and 90% chance of total cure without chemo. Kidney was taken out 9/16 and prostate is coming out mid Nov. So I am in-between surgeries and have some time and energy to catch up on projects.

Kevin W asked if there were rivnuts uder the console and there are, original console, ZL2, and D80 car. Looks like somebody along the line modified the shifter hole to fit the shifter.

Sam, I think your Z is in great shape actually. The floors and trunk area look solid and free of rust, which is a good sign. I will give you a call in a day or so. I added something new to my stable. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

On my tunnel under the console was painted in Hugger Orange "Mr Moto". Wait til you see the car after being stripped and cleaned up Sam. It should look something like this.

That looks pretty darn good Jeff, How about starting a thread for your resto with picts? A rare JL8 resto would be pretty cool. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
Have you been out to Pennsyltuckey yet?

I haven't seen the car in a long time so I'm not sure where he is regarding the paint. Yes, I'm going with those Stahl headers that look very similar to the dealer sold headers.

Sam, the mule has the same blackout treatment on the front floor as your car. I wonder what is the deal with it?

Jeff, nice job on the resto...was the metal bead blasted or wire brushed to look like that?

Jeff H

The car was dipped at RediStrip and then Rich and the guys at the shop hit it with wire wheels to clean it up. We found both quarters had lots of little dings, dents, holes and other repairs as well as the rear panel so they were replaced with NOS GM panels.
