I thought I would share progress on my Daytona Yellow Automatic 9566 car I am preparing to go to BJ Scottsdale with in January. This is the car I bought from second owner, Ken Heckert, a few years ago in good overall condition but needing done. 100% mathching number drivetrain, build sheet, protecto plate imprint, oddball Malibu trim/paint, no radio, gauges, buckets & console. A really cool car and an easy car to do as I needed to look for so little as car was very original. Can't keep 'em all.........this ones gonna go and should really make someone happy if they want a real, no BS car in great colors and nice equipment. Now I will try to attach some pics. Thanks for looking !!!

Very impressive work George. Rest assured, your COPO will be one of the first Chevrolets I will be looking for at BJ 2006!

Looking terrific George, very well done. Gee, some nice looking decals on the front end http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have a couple of questions. I notice the "Malibu" script on the quarters and the lower rocker moldings with silver color. Did some COPO's come this way?

Good luck at BJ George http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Those decals were secured from an underground source in a foreign country with American currency. And yes they are nice, Thanks Don. And the Malibu trim is rare, correct for this car and just a few others I have heard of. I don't think it was ordered any different, just happened to be built on a Malibu body instead of an SS body like the others. I'll take a shot of the build sheet and Protecto Plate imprint when get a moment.

------Geez, George, I just cant figure out how you can do them so nice in that run down, ramshackle shop of yours. How do you do it??? Cant wait to see it at BJ as well.............Bill S

Never seen matching orange exhaust manifolds before, I like it. Nice car, what day is this going across the block?

Is that Gardner exhaust?

GeorgeLyons
11-17-2005, 08:32 PM
correct with manifolds painted, just like Tonawanda (good photos in some Corvette NCRS stuff clearly showing this) Once car is run and hot it all burns off except just up by the heads. You get the perfect look. My Butternut yenko done exactly like this 16 years ago still looks good with manifolds looking bare, natural, very light brownish/rust except engine orange showing just near the heads. You end up with the right look but car must get up to temp a couple times. We are gonna fire this car next week and I will share post burn off pictures afterwards.
Yes, Gardner chambered (correct per my build sheet to be chambered and original was still on car but cut for headers).
BJ Friday night, 7-8PM I figure. I'll be one nervous SOB.

George, if you get too nervous before driving your COPO up to the block, I'll ride up there with you. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

That Gardener exhaust is a beauty..I put one on my COPO as well.

you'll be nervous alright..as will some other COPO Chevelle owners who will be watching what kind of number the car will bring. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

George,
The COPO looks great! What was the engine paint you used? It looks perfect, not too orange, not too red. I look forward to seeing the car at auction. Good luck.

First off, Thanks to Albert for posting the pics I failed doing.
As to question of engine color: I have never found anything closer than Plasticote in the aerosol cans, Chevy Engine Orange. I have a painted valve cover I took off a 70 Camaro about 1 week after delivery and it is a good color test sample..........very close to this paint and not too shiny like some others I see. Easy to find at most auto parts stores. I have used nothing else for years.

Beautiful car and fantastic work! . Looking at those chassis shots reminded me of High School Auto shop days. . GM Oshawa used to give our area high schools new "damaged" units to dismantle for tech training. . We usually pulled the bodies whose parts were sold off then shortened the chassis and made drivable chassis units. . Besides fond memories of the parking lot races, I remember most were full size Chevys often wagons and sometimes trucks also recall a few 66-67 Novas? . I remember one school had a 72? Skylark with that tarp style sunroof....I think it had A-pillar damage from hitting an overhead obstical and think it stayed together and was sold in the later 70's with about 20 miles on it? ~ Pete

George, I would be nervous at BJ also, one Loomis truck for the cash after the auction probably won't be enough!!!!

GeorgeLyons
11-18-2005, 10:17 PM
Yes, rolled exhaust tips, a rare '69 only item I always liked. This is actually a set I made/copied/repo'd back around 1990 and sold to the previous owner of this car who never put them on because he never did the car. They were in trunk in the box I sent them in from years ago. I had a Dusk Blue L78 car years ago that had original ones I used for a prototype and worked with a local hot rodder buddy to make about 12 or so sets I sold. They are out there somewhere on cars.

Scheduled to cross the auction block 9 cars after the Ray Allen LS6 Convertible http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif ..... excellent timing, George. I usually leave the auction before that time of evening, but might have to stick around for those two http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

-------Man,,,,,With that Malibu trim this is the sleeper COPO of all time. Who among us would even hazard a guess that beside us at the light is a 427/425 wolf in sheeps clothing. Back in the day an astute street-racer would have put full wheel-covers on this piece of architecture to complete the ensemble. 90% of us would be just shaking our heads after this yellow bomber left us in its dust........Bill S
