vintage sun tach batteries???where to get them???

I have a vintage sun tach assy model # EB-9A is on the under hood transistor box,anyway i guess it takes batteries and they look like a AA 1.5 v battery but iam told they will not work??? Tag inside says use rm12r or sun 1766-7 anyone know where i can get the correct batteries to make it work??thanks

I have a set I can sell you but I dont know if they work or not... I had one of those boxes a couple years ago that I had converted to a solid state... I think I paid $175 to do this and it never needed batteries again... The car that it was installed in never had any problems with the conversion... Mark

The ones I have are Duracell RM12R 1.35 Volts Mercury Battery. Have you checked with Radio Shack?? I know they carry wierd sizes... Your more then welcome to these just pay me for the shipping because I dont need them... Mark

Best to convert the EB9A...I don't think these batteries are available anymore and I believe they were some type of mercury battery..

That's right. Originals were 1.35V and they were mercury oxide, long since banned. A long time ago I did find a source of Panasonic 1.35V that were alkyline, but they've dried up too (pun intended).
As much as I want originality, there's just no other choice today but to convert to the solid state set-up.
I think there are 2 ways it's done. The tach head can be converted, which then operates like a Sun Super Tach, and the sender becomes a dummy, nothing more than a junction box for wiring (sits on the inner fender for looks). Or the sender itself can be converted to no longer need batteries, but then it needs an extra wire run to it which hurts the original appearance.
Or.....you "can" use AAs, and the needle will move, but you won't like what it does. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

http://www.tachman.com/gm.htm Tachman says he can do them with no change in appearance or wiring..he does good work.Not sure if he means the tach or the box...worth a call.
