Recently someone asked me to find some old photos, and I ran accross this, my very first car. '72 Vega GT.
Once the dealer (Roger Penske Chev., Southfield MI) replaced the short block (under warranty) and I got somebody to epoxy the screws that held the carb together, it ran and handled pretty good. Then it rusted out around the windshield, and pretty much everywhere else.

Anybody else got an old photo of their first car? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Wow, I remember replacing those short blocks under warranty. I worked for a local dealer and was at the bottom of the totem pole. GM paid a little over 8 hours to put a short block in one of those and I worked flat rate. They stuck me every one of 'em http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif I almost starved to death. Many a week I took home an 85.00 pay check http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif Our labor rate was 10.00 per hour and I got 50%. That paid me a little over 40.00 to do that job. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsdown.gif Damn, now my blood pressure is up!

GREAT thread, Andy! I'll try and dig up some pictures of my first car, which was a truck...I think we gave $100 for it...'63, 2wd, step-side...thing had been a farm truck since birth, had a blue cab and a green box/bed, and looked like someone had beat it with a mallet all over...I threw about 5 pounds of Bondo and a couple gallons of red paint at it, and thought I was in tall cotton! The tall rear gears and truck 4-speed took it's toll on the 283, so I put in a 305... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I have no pictures but it was a 49 Chevey sedan Deluxe! My Dad gave $50.00 for it from Uncle Buddys Used Cars on North Main St Houston Texas. It was faded red but ran like a singer sewing machine,That jewel stayed in our family for 5 years without a dimes worth of trouble.Only thing ever replaced was tires and battery. Those were the good old days, regular 19.9 per gallon, flat's fixed for 50 cents, hamburger and a coke for 50 cents. We even had a local hang out called Prices Burgers where you could get 5burgers for a $1.00,man talk abou tgetting full! Bill, That's funny and reminds me of the first time I drove a car. I was 13 also...and it was in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin
at my best friends grandma's farm...
She had a huge corn field...and a 1968 Caprice siiting in the barn (this was 1972). She told us to "go have fun" and "not to tell". Like she said "what could we possibly hit...except the corn stalks".
God that was fun...and we never told anyone http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif until now...

My dad bought me a '63 Impala SS 'vert 283/auto for a buck! My uncle was going to trade it in, but my father talked him into transferring the title to me for one-dollar.

My first Car was a 1963 Impala SS. Car was a 409 340hp with a powerglide. My Buddy that Owned it was Building a Thames wagon with an Injected Small Block and needed to sell the Imp to finance the Thames. This was Oct of 76. His Dad was A Sergeant with the Seattle Police Department,he sold me the Car for $225. I had that Car excactly half hour before Breaking the Rear end doing a Block Long Burnout. The nice thing about Jeffs dad being a Cop, all the Cops knew the Car so they would not bother me. Heck they even helped me get it home when I broke the rear end.

Wow, you guys started driving late in life! I actually drove a car alone for the first time at age eight! My Dad worked for an implement dealer and needed to pick up a farm truck to take in for some service. I went with him to the farmer's house; he drove the truck back and I drove our '51 Chevy home. My Mom almost killed him when she found out! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif
As for the first car.... it was a '57 BelAir Hardtop/283 "PowerPack", 3 speed. Still Have It! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif
When I bought it, the original 4 barrel was gone and it had a two barrel on it. Wasn't that way long as I replaced it with a 780 Holley and a '65 L79 intake. (She never starved for fuel! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif) The previous owner, who I knew, had run dual AFB's, but took them off when he sold it. It now sits ready to accept a fresh LT-1 with correct appearing Dual WCFB's. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Cool thread! My first car was a '69 Chevy pickup....small block/3-tree. . The crazy thing is it was factory purple! . I painted it w/ grey spray bombs as the color sure seemed dumb at the time. . I sold it in '79....never thought about looking at trim tags back then? . Anyone know if purple was a factory color choice? ~ Pete

Hugger Orange 70 Nova, 307, floor mounted 3 speed. $2400 + tax + fees, out the door from Egizio Chev-Olds, Naperville IL, in June 1970. Sold it 5 months later (wasn't fast enough) to a friend who promptly rolled it. It was within a few $$$ of being totalled, but it got fixed and painted blue. He drove it for many years and had way over 100K on the clock when he got rid of it. If I had bought the Citrus green 70 1/2 Z28 RS that I really wanted, I might still have it http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif Payments on the Z were gonna be $140/mo. and I was sure I couldn't afford it. Payments on the Nova were $77/mo.....and I made double payments on it every month http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

My (very) first car was a '54 Chevy that my brother gave to me while he was serving a tour of duty in Viet Nam. The car was blue with black tuck and roll interior, Corvette 327 w/two 4's, 4 speed, 4:10 rear, roll bar, tear drop scoop, etc, etc. For my 16th Birthday, he mailed me the title. About a week later I grabbed some friends to go to my Aunts house where the car was stored in a barn only to find the storm that went through the night before lowered the barn about 20' right on top of the car. Needless to say I never even got to drive the car one time. Somewhere I have photos of that car as well.

My first car was a 1977 Grand Prix that was painted in primer with a white half vinyl top. I was 16 years old when I got it in 1994. I paid $500 for it and dad was so pissed that I bought a car with out his knowledge he told me to park it down the street! I wish that I had pictures of it!
Pops told me to tell you guys that his first car was a 56 Buick Convert Canary yellow with a black rag top that he bought from a guy for $15.00 when he was 15 in 1965! he said that the car had a bad trans which him and his buddy switched out that afternoon with a junk yard trans for about another $15.00! Man those would have been the days!

Bought it in 1979 (California) from my next-door neighbor who bought it new. I immediately built a solid-lifter 327 and hooked it to a '70 M-22 and 3:55 12-bolt Posi. Sold it in 1985 with a fresh solid-lifter 4-bolt 350. Last saw it in 1999 in my buddy's backyard rotting away with all the good parts long gone, naturally.

VIN # VS29HOB355542, do you have any idea how many newspapers I had to deliver to do that trick? Dad said my first car MUST be new, it MUST be paid cash in full, and I MUST have 1 years insurance paid up front... I had $13 left over the night I drove it home, and $6 of that filled it up at Amoco at 34.9 cents a gallon for premium.. I had $7 left till the next payday... just enough for $1 Burger King dinner and another $6 for a full tank of gas.. priority's ya know, gas b4 food.. all that, and I was only 16 at the time...

The auto history for Wilma started with a 64 Impala wagon which my father gave me in the summer of 1973. It burned more oil than gas, 283/PG with rust holes you could throw a cat through. I sold it for $75.00 in the fall of 73 and got a 64 mailbu sport coupe, another 283/PG. The first "real" car came in Feb 74, a 70 Forest Green L78 4spd Nova SS. I guess you guys know the rest of the story....
I have a picture somewhere of that Nova, just can't find it!

Hi guys. Newbie here. Thanks for letting me in the clubhouse.
My first car was a '68 Firebird. Purchased from my cousin as a 16 year old in 1974. He rarely drove it and the thing still smelled new when I bought it for the princely sum of $1,600. 4 speed, mild cam. The paint code on the tag said "Special" I hope my photos are attached. Moved up a year later as a 17 year old to a '70 GTO 4 speed convertible. That one I don't have a picture of and wish I did. Everybody has a car they wish they still had and this is it. Standard 400 engine but gobs of power. Great looks, and great ride. I'm not surprised these cars are commanding the prices they are today. Sold it to go to college. A few years ago, I sold my '67 Chevelle SS396 (325 horse) to build my present home. Sorry bowtie guys, The GTO would have run circles around the Chevelle.
Great board guys, glad to be here.

I bought my first car when I was 15 (living on Clybourn near Fullerton in Chicago)....it was a 55 Chevy 210 2 dr sedan......Beige in color......I paid $15 for it....it was missing the Engine and transmission......The guy I bought it from lived about 6 blocks away........I got all my friends together and we pushed it to my house.....took a couple of hours...LOL......I had a Lincoln-Belmont Booster Paper route and I had saved up a "Wad" ......my dad signed for it as he probably figured I would never have a chance in the world of getting the parts and figuring out how to put it together to make it run again.....But........
One of the older guy's (he was probably 19) in the neighborhood had a 57 Chevy with a 265 and a three speed and he found a used 301 with a 30-30 cam and heavy duty 3 Speed and I helped him swap the engines out right in the alley.....learned a lot that day......He taught me not to be afraid of trying to work on my own stuff, just pay attention to how you take it apart and use common sense in putting it back together as everything we touched has a purpose and someone else had already engineered it out to that point....So.........He gave me his old engine and trans for helping and by my 16th birthday the car was up and running and was my High School car.......Took off the front bumper and primered the front end (remember when primered front ends were the rage)......drove the wheels off that thing for a couple of years .....when I graduated I sold it and bought a New 65 Impala........"BORING"......traded the Impala in on a Marina Blue SS L79 Nova in 66........But......that's another Story.........

1968 Camaro bought used from local Chev dealer in August 1971. It had 39,000 miles and I paid $1600.00. Car had a 327 Powerslide and no PS or Pb but it did have the deluxe Houndstooth Interior. It was mid year "package" with special paint "Corvette Bronz". The dealer mechanic blew the engine on his test drive a hour before i was to pick up the car. Dealer installed a new engine under warranty. I put 50,000 miles on that car over the next 18 months.
