It appears to have the proper air cleaner:

The Tach is correct for an L78, The car still has the original shift ball but the wood grain shift plate did not
come on the L78, They were Black. It also has a BB Fan Shroud and the L78 air cleaner.

I see the seller added some more pictures to his listing. Another classic copper with black and white custom cloth L78. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

So a deluxe interior L78 would come with a wood grain wheel but a black shift plate. That is just strange. Doesn't sound right, L78 was an option, not a different car.

Although I cant see clearly the interior code, it appears to be custom cloth Black with white accents code 713.
Custom interior Z-87, would include the wood dash and wood horn shroud as came with Z-23, Interior Accent group. As well the wood shift plate was part of Z-87 Custom Interior, but NOT the Z-23 Accent Group.
As my own 70 R/S Z-28 has the wood dash, wood shroud, BLACK shift plate with 711 Std Black Interior.....

Yes each was a different option in itself... dash/steering wheel/shifter plate...
By why wouldn't an L-78 be optioned with a woodgrain shifter plate?

Chuck, since my car has the Z-87 option the wood shift plate is correct. Correct? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif
Also, I noticed the 130 speedo and missing tach needle in the ebay car. Should it not be 150 mph, but since these gauges were optional possibly they were added later?

Let's say, conservatively, you put 50G's into a restoration on that car. How much is it worth then?

Hard to say Mark... does not have the original motor but he says he has the P-o-P. I think that a frame off restored 1970 L-78 Camaro would be worth $60,000-$75,000. The only issue I have is that I have never seen a pristine condition L-78 Camaro sell. Either complete cars with NOM or complete project cars. Tough call.

i also thought they had a 150 speedo with the 8 grand tach.

I spoke with the owner at length today. He is a very nice man and honest at that. He is the original owner. He's got the P-o-P and some bank slips he just found. He asked where to find a build sheet so I told him. The car is priced just below $20,000.

The L78 shifter plate was discussed at NastyZ28 a while back. Chuck (CamarosRus) did a survey on this
and If I remember correctly the L78 w Deluxe had a Black plate and all of the other models had a wood
grain. My car has the (727) Deluxe Interior with the original shift plate and it is Black. I will try to find the
link for the survey that Chuck did.
BTW, I agree Don; This car should have a 150 Speedometer.

2nd Picture Showing 130 MPH Speedo starting in 1972....so PLEASE explain the 130MPH Speedo in this car????
ALSO, Note 7000 Max tach, which CAN BE doctored up to appear as 6500 Red Line/7000 Max 1970 L-78 Tach (one year only) I have received private Email suggesting some of lower rpm yellow & red was removed ???.......
and WHERE is the Tach Needle.....whats that all about????

Another issue that I cant verify. I have never seen those wheel covers used on a 70 SS Camaro. The plain jane 14x7 CL wheel came with Baby Moon Bowtie embossed caps.....and options included the Full Diameter wire wheel cover or rally wheels....all 14". I have only seen those inexpensive full wheel discs used on 14x6 wheels such as Mosports non SS 1970 Camaro.

Here is something that will add fuel to the fire...
Exhibit A: Tank sheet from my 1970 Camaro (well... half of it)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v441/mosportgreen66/1970%20Camaro/P1140008.jpg
The options described by Chuck in a pervious post.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v441/mosportgreen66/1970%20Camaro/P1140010.jpg
the wheel covers as denoted, "P01 DLX WHEEL COVER."
So was this wheel cover standard or an option?
Lastly... the wheels covers look classy...

Hi everyone, new member here. I called this guy on the L-78 and we spoke at length about this car. I believe it is all true as he stated in his ad. He bought the car new from a local dealership. The car developed a rod knock while still under warranty and the local chevy dealer installed a 454 in place of the 375hp 396 since that engine was no longer available. It still has the original air cleaner with the 375hp emblem and posi-traction which would indicate that it might be a L-78. The owner did not know what a L-78 really was until several people contacted him about the car. He added that after lengthy discussions with them. The reserve price is $20,000.00. He couldn't find the build sheet behind the seat, so I and others informed him to check on top of the tank and under the carpet under the drivers seat. I don't know why it shows a 130MPH speedo, but all other indicators are that it may be real. If anyone has questions, his email is
[email protected] . His name is Jerry McComb, a nice guy that is willing to answer any questions.

I believe its real also but one has to wonder why they changed the gauges. Ive been thinking about it and those gauges are the same ones i saw before in a 74 Z28. I remember the tach looking strange to me because of it only being a 7000 tach with the same 6500 redline! The only other thing thats strange is every other car thats under warranty gets a new shortblock leaving all the original top end on the car but this guy got a smogger motor put in. He said to me "oh yeah" they might have done that first but then this engine was put in. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

The 130MPH gauge package is absolutely not correct for the car. 150 MPH speedo was found in ALL 1970 Camaros regardless of engine choice. The correct L-78 tach is 5700-6500 Yellow line with 6500-7000 redline. This looks correct but since the needle is missing I question the whole gauge package.
I also wondered why the complete motor was changed out. The waterneck sticks out like a sore thumb.
The rearend and sway bar are correct.

Looks like a nice car to start with and probrably runs good with that 454 squeezed in there. It's a shame about the the rod knock in the original motor but at least it was covered by GM. Too bad the owner back then wasn't given the option to keep the original motor. Hmm, those hub caps gotta go.........

I talked with the guy on Friday. He was going to check carb and dist numbers so I may know more tomorrow. He said GM installed a "long block" so the good heads are gone too.
Something doesn't seem right about it all though.

After doing some research in my Chevrolet Illustrated Chassis and Body Catolog.....in Group 5.858 CAMARO wheel covers I see item 12 part # 3980992 which is what the EBAY Maroon (code 67 Classic Copper) has. 1st time I had seen this least expensive PO1 cap used on SS car, but evidently correct. THAT style PO1 was 1 year only as also used on Mosport's 70 L-65 Camaro. 71-73 PO1 cap (part# 3990555) was similar but no BowTie and had Chevrolet Motor Division center area ala 67 Camaro Rally Centers.....

PO2 Wire Cover, CL wheel with distintive FLAT inner sided (most were made by Kelsey Hayes with K code, but made by Norris Technology had T stamped code and are somewhat different. All 70 SS Camaros came with CL wheels unless you ordered the ZJ7 Rally Whee Option. I have shown the correct trim ring with tear drop valve stem hole....and ORIGINAL Correct lugnuts used on Ralleys and Z-28. CL wheels without optional covers got BowTie Baby Moon

Mark, As you already know, NastyZ28 is trying to poll owners with Z-87 interior AND D-55 consoles to confirm if Wood Grain Shift plates were installed, as they should of.
We understand that yours and Mike Steitz's Z-87/D-55 Camaros came with unexplainable Black shift plates. Until somebody comes up with a new theory, I have to believe it was a factory mistake......
