WISCONSIN A Marine Honor Guard carries the body of Sgt. Andy A. Stevens out of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Tomah as snow falls. Stevens, who was buried Wednesday, was one of 10 Marines killed from Company F, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment in a bomb attack in Fallujah, Iraq, on December 1.

My youngest son spent approx fifteen months in Baghdad from April 2003 through July 2004. Although his training was as a gunner in a tank, he didn't have his tank with him for the whole first year. Played foot soldier, doing either guard duty or going building to building looking for insurgents.
I could not watch the news. It was one of the worst years of my life. My son came home safely. My heart really goes out to the families whose children and spouses did not come home safely.
Sometimes I feel guilty because of the sacrifices my father made in WWII, and the sacrifices my son made in the Middle East. I was never in the military, but get to enjoy my freedom, and even bitch when I don't like the way things are going. We all owe our troops and our veterans more than we can ever repay. Hard for me to talk (or type) about this without choking up.

A reality check that reinforces the message that "Freedom doesn't come cheap, it is paid for with the lives of heros"

My younger brother spent time in that crap hole (fallujah), last summer. He's a Marine officer with 3 kids and a wife, I worried my ass off, the whole time he was there. I never let a day go by, without saying a prayer for those men, and realizing how fortunate that I am to be here, and not there. For those of us who never served, we can still do a little, just give hell to every socialist idiot, that you encounter.
