Had someone from Chicago inquire about having a mini-reunion at SCR9 of supercars sold by Chicago area dealers, of course Chevys from Nickey, Douglass, etc, but how about a couple of non-Chevys, such as sold by Mr. Norm's.

Lets here what you have.

Why Not!!?? Gags, Darren and Mike gave BBBenny and I a little tour of the Chicago area. I took a few pictures of Grand Spaulding Dodge. What history. Amazing how these little dealerships 40 years ago put out such great cars. Lets do it! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burnout.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

Camarojoe created a monster! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I developed a new appreciation for people that collect stuff like this. Unlike general Chevrolet stuff, dealer specific memorabilia is VERY hard to find especially when you limit it to just one city and the immediate surrounding area. The NOS dealer decals are definitely the hardest items to find. Unlike emblems that you can find in a junk yard it is very hard to find dealer decals that have NOT been stuck on a car. About 98% of Chicago area dealers used decals after the 1950's.

SORRY to hijack this thread! Tom, I think this would be a very cool thing to do since a good majority of the sYc members are from around the Chicago area. We also had some of the most noted dealers in our back yard! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

Sure looks awesome sitting there all together.
Some of those Nickey Items I have never prior to this post.
I got some more work to do then... (haha).

This could be going somewhere Tom and Rob. Maybe each show you sub-showcase a different region and the dealerships of the day. Look at lower Westchester and Long Island... Baldwin, Mack Markowitz, Curry, Bryne Bothers, Soundveiw etc. Or PA with Yenko and its web of dealers...

Seems like a good idea you guys sparked here.

My mother would shop at the Jewel Food Store next to Suniday and would leave me by the fenced gate behind the service department so I could watch, hear and identify the Muscle cars, while she shopped. Lots of day two style cars.

The Old Location in now a US post Office. The Dealership was moved to Route 41 and became C-Frank Chevrolet, named for Chuck the Son of Zollie Frank, of Z-Frank Chevy in Chicago.

Chuck sold the dealership in 1992 to the Muller Auto Group. They moved the location and Muller Chevrolet is Still there today.

Suniday and Z-Frank were very high volume dealerships and sold many Corvettes and Muscle cars.

I know Pasquesi's too, but there weren't many Hot Rods or Muscle cars running around there LF, in my day.Don't know about the 60s-70s. I was one of the few. As far as HP & HW goes that was another story.

My older Cousin Enzo, ruled the streets with his '65 Satellite which had a 426 race Hemi, purchased at Mr. Norms. It was Tuned by the Funny Car team Nanini and Fontanini. He passed early in his life,as did Al Fontanini, but was instrumental in getting me hooked into this hobby on many levels.

Found this in a stack of Newspapers I recently acquired.
It's especially interesting to me,because it is the ONLY time I have seen a dealership publically advertise the 1969 Chevrolet SuperSport Sweepstakes program, which offered Cars as well as CA$H prizes.
The first time Chevrolet ever stooped to do that,as they really didn't like to give out CA$H Money.

Satellite sounds the bidness. Ray B's GTX and Demon probably make up my biggest Mopar/HW recollections. Clearing a table or two at the Del Rio would be another HW memory.

Lots of Mopars in HW. Bernardi was one of the "older" fast guys. That Demon ran a healthy 440 when I had my '69 Camaro. Sounds like we are close to the same time frame, what was your ride?

Al Fontannini and Reno Nanini (Good Polish Boy's) ran a Injected Hemi Funny car.....as I remember they never went to a Blower set-up.....they ran the Midwest circuit.....I think Al was killed in a Highway incident same as Jungle Jim...

Reno is a relative. Al was rear ended at the toll both on 41 on his way to the grove. The fuel was stored on the transporter. They were one of the first Funny Cars to run in the 7.00s or 8.00s? I believe. Reno's son still races and builds chassis.

Lived on Old Elm Rd. a couple houses up from the Mobil Station (worked there, too) and the base. When Ray had the Demon, I had a '67 Vette Roadster w/an LS-7 crate (from Shepard), 4:11's (courtesy 'o Karz by Mark) and a set of Americans off an old L-88 Vette from same. Was dark blue, small flares, L-88 hood, no front bumper. Ray was a caravan regular to the CC Nats.

[/ QUOTE ]

Ken there are four Fencl Tufo Deuces surviving. The two you mentioned and one that has yet to be seen by one of us. John D of IL has owned a Gobi Beige Fencl Tufo Deuce since 1976. The car retains it's original paint but has been stripeless since it's early days. The other surviving Deuce is a Hugger Orange car that is currently under resto by it's owner Johnny M in OH. I talked to him a month ago and he is making progress. Pics to follow.

The two remaining of the six Fencl Tufo Deuces are a Sunflower Yellow car that was totaled in the 70's and the Fencl Tufo race car The Draggin Deuce which is still MIA. I have the original paperwork on this car but have not been able to make any good of the leads that I have received as of yet.

Sorenson Chevrolet in Waukeegan, IL and Mancuso Chevrolet in Skokie, IL both sold three Deuces new, NONE of which have been found so far.

I'd love to see that gobi beige deuce, been talking to the owner for years - but nary a pic http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif I understand that when the stripes were removed, so was the hood tach and the hole was patched!

The orange deuce was in the same Hemmings issue as my car back in '96, was owned at the time by the art dealer/benz dealer that all you chi-town guys seem to know. That car has it's POP, and was sold new to a guy in Carpentersville, IL - is that close to F-Tufo?

The S-Yellow car was actually a repo, then involved in several accidents, with the final one a major T-bone where it was totalled - bummer.

One of the Mancuso Deuces is indeed found, still with it's original owner. It was a race car early on, and would carry the front wheels! Now, it's been semi-restored back to stock, cool car.

As far as the Gobi car I should mention that the car has not seen the light of day in a long time, possibly decades. I met one of the guys friends from high school and he remembered that in the 70's the car had some wild engine mods like maybe a blower. He remembered that it was the fastest car at school! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Last one. Marlin, Johnny has A LOT more than just the POP for this car. He has a lot of hard to get original paperwork on it as well! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Also note the fat grip wheel in this pic. Every Fencl Tufo Deuce that has paper or was found in an original state like has extra Yenko options. This car retains it's original motor which was in the trunk when these pics were taken and it's original rear. The original trans was blown up long ago.

I might be goofy but if I owned this Deuce I would drive it around just like it is. Have my own supercar beater! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Imagine pulling up at the grocery store or the high school parking lot with the car in this condition and just leaving it parked! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I have more pics of it around here somewhere, one of which is in the vintage section of this site. Love the remnants of the Fencl-Tufo decal http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Anyone ever heard of Egizio (sp) Chevrolet in Naperville? My brother took delivery of their first 1970 Z28. Daytona yellow bought it right of the showroom floor. Still remember it like yesterday. Think that was the start of my sickness!!

I removed some front Bucket seats & a Tilt Steering Column out of a Monte Carlo I found at Victory Auto Wreckers in 1981.I found a buildsheet showing:

Egizio Chevrolet Oldsmobile
P.O. BOX 240
NAPERVILLE IL
60540
Dealer 11
Zone 181

I know they are no longer in Business today.
I think they became Horizon Chevrolet on 1540 W. Ogden.

My 70 Chevelle came from Yarnall Todd Chevrolet in Wheeling, now Bill Stasek Chevrolet.

I used to own an LS6 that came from Quality Chevrolet. If I still owned it I would beg Frank for the dealer sticker he has. I used to own an L78 Camaro that came from McInerney Chevrolet.

Egizio was at the southwest corner of Ogden and Naperville Rd. It's now Gerald Nissan, believe it was Gerald Olds, too.

I looked at a used butternut yellow 69 SS396 Chevelle on the lot there when I was in high school.

I just found this:

Angelo J. Egizio, who operated Egizio Chevrolet-Oldsmobile in Naperville from 1957 to 1981, died Nov. 14. He was 81.

Egizio flew on 65 missions for the Army Air Corps in World War II and on 85 missions for the Air Force in the Korean War. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge, the final German offensive in the west, in late 1944, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, among other medals.

Egizio is survived by his wife, Mary; daughters Toni, Phyllis, Jaime and Mary; sons Michael, James, Owen and Rocco; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A son-in-law, Roland Gartner, owns Gartner Buick-Saab-Hyundai in Naperville

Thanks for all the Egizio info, I grew up down the street from their home and was good friends with Owen they are a nice family. Mr. Egizio at one time had a Corvette for every year and when a new one came out he would put it away, believe they were all upstairs at the dealership. I wonder what happened to all them cars, most had little or no miles on them.
I also have the paper work from my brothers Z28 wonder if it's still around also, it was traded in at a dealership further down Ogden Ave. in Downers Grove don't remember the name off hand.

That area outside the parts dept was a good place to show off the latast conversions......you had to walk thru the service area to get into the parts dept and on weekends that was a good area to show off what was new......I vaguely remember the 64.....but remember, that was an "Old" car at the time and we were interested in the new stuff...As I remember the 64 had gold rims and blackwalls
Just thinking........Wouldn't it be neat (but stupid from a business perspective) to recreate the Nickey Business as it was and have it as a strictly Vintage Muscle Car Sales and Restoration business......Maybe if I had Charley's money.....LOL http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/haha.gif

My point being..........Like the painting being sold with all the Muscle Cars in front of the Nickey Dealership.......If I or you had unlimited funds to rebuild what was once there and turn it into the "Ultimate" Muscle car Sales and High End Restoration business would be the "Ultimate" on the Cool scale.........But, my point was that the cost of getting to that point could probably not be supported fiscally by the profits that would be available.......The idea isn't stupid, but the Business Plan would have to make sense to a Banker (that's the hard part)

Speaking of Chicago, does anyone have any info on a McKeown Phelan Chevrolet in Glen Ellyn? My black 70 LS6 4sp was sold there new according to the NICB. The address shows what is now Jerry Haggerty Chev at 300 W Roosevelt RD. BTW Nickey Chevrolet is not completely dead, the small parts bins from the dealership's parts department are all in our parts dept to this day. When Nickey/Keystone /Lynch shut down we acquired them from the movers. (Ed Van Drill & Co) They are still full of Chevy parts being sold every day. come and visit them anytime.

Back in 1987 I took my IROC into Mckeown/Phelan Chevrolet for service.I was driving it to Texas the following week, and they were the only area dealership who had a sensor and harness in stock that my cars brain box needed. They were just switching ownership,so I asked if they had any crap in the attic they wanted to sell/throw away. They gave me permission to go look as I had to wait 3 hours in the waiting room for my car to be done.
I was floored at what I found,Lights displays, catalogs, and boxes of old paperwork all from the previous 20 years.Half of it I couldn't carry.I did manage to get some displays and catalogs that were not specific to Mckeown/Phalin as well as many Communication Kits from 1968-72.They even had the projector & screen they showed them on.I felt at the time I got the best of the crap they had to offer, they had boxes of vehicle invoices & trinkets like keychains and dealer decals, ice scrappers, etc. They would have sold me the waiting room furniture if I wanted it.They really were abandoning ship at that time.It was a pretty run down deshoveled looking business by then.
I always regret not getting more as my time & funds were limited.Today it's obvious the collectibility in that, but back then who knew as much.I do have some paper stating they were Zone-11 Dealer-368.

Rick very cool, I need to buy a key chain and an ice scraper ! Somewhere I have a title search I did back in the early 90's when you still got the real names and such. The LS6 had numerous owners, I bet someone on this site owned it or knows of it. PM me when you get a chance. Thanks a million!
