This ultra-rare Thunderbolt was up for grabs via an online auction recently. As of this writing, bidding had stalled at $200,000 and the seller's reserve hadn't been met
During the last few months you’ve read about high-dollar Mopars, which seem to have a never-ending spiral to the ionosphere, but now we have a rare piece of Ford racing history with a big price tag, and it's probably worth the money.
An online auction for a Mickey Thompson-prepared, 1964 Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt, 427 Hemi, four-speed ended yesterday. By Tuesday, there were 25 bids starting at, believe it or not, $1. The bidding stalled at $200,000, which had not met the reserve. T-Bolts are rare even with the standard 427s.
Ford built 100 of them, the first 11 being Vintage Burgundy, as is the car for sale, the other 89 were Wimbledon White. Fewer than 60 are known to exist, just 41 were four-speeds and this car was sold to Mickey Thompson.
These cars were built before the SOHC “Cammer” was released, according to the seller. The cylinder heads were cast by Ford from Chrysler Hemi heads and machined to fit the 427 block. The car has had numerous owners, including Boyd Coddington. The current owner has had it only two years. A restoration started in 1987 and was completed by Randy DeLisio of Lyons, New York, in the early 1990s. Here’s the best part: This car cost $3,900 new.
Bidding for this car started at $1, but zoomed to $200,000 and the reserve still wasn’t met. The sale was to end late Tuesday, but the seller apparently has given it another day. As of this writing, it has stalled at $200,000; we’ll see what happens.

Sure seems like it should be worth more especially compared to the high priced Mopars without any race history. I'm not a Ford guy, but this is one that would be cool to own.

Saw the Thunderbolt at Legendary 5-6 years ago. That one had much more lettering and markings on it than this one. You would have thought that the purchaser would have left it in the"original" decal condition. Perhaps Canucklehead is right !

What do you think will be worth more in 5 years, 10 years, this Mickey Thompson Thunderbolt or a Ford GT? Which do you think will be more fun to drive in that same time frame?

Canuckle,

---------If this car has a Hemi headed big block Ford, the chances that its a fake are pretty close to ZERO (0)!!! Lettering gets changed out all the time for many reasons..........Bill S

Agree Red...unless I am missing something here..which is always a possibility...I stared at it on Legendary's site for weeks...this is the Thunderbolt to own unless it has some issues that we don't know about...Jess Tyree was the driver of this car in 64..he was a real Pontiac guy...
