Jeff every year at Scott AFB in Illinois they would have an F 15 come in from St Louis and it would make a low and slow fly by...then a fast fly by and on the 3rd pass he would put it on its ass and go straight up..I think the F15 held a record for time to climb and was one of the few jets that could accelerate vertical...or something like that...say ar SR 71 do the same thing there...My brother was career AF and he never saw an SR71 until then....at Clark AFB they would take off and land under cover of night usually and go directly to the hanger

The SR71 was on it's way to parts unknown and olny did a flyby to show the crowd,,,it was pretty amazing when he left the show area on a near vertical and pushed until it was out of sight !! Pretty cool stuff...that was a great year at the air show...parked on the tarmac was the Space Shuttle ..either Challenger or Columbia on top of it's 747 transport plane !!

You can see the SR-71 Trainer (with dual cockpits) at the Edwards AFB,CA open houses since its flown by NASA at the Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards. They usually make a low flyby and then a higher faster one http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
NASA 831 is the Trainer http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

We see the U-2 come in here now and then and thats pretty neat looking plane as well.

Funny story about Edwards...my cousin and I went out to Cal. on a spur of the moment trip to go see the Monterey Historics many years ago...we drove the coast in a rental car from L.A. We cruised back north after the races and noticed some Navy jets flying aroound...turned out to be Pt. Mugu or something like that...we scoped the map and decided we would take a drive to Edwards and take a public tour because we like this stuff. We pulled into the drive and as we pulled forward to the gate the guy posted there presented arms to us and asked us just what the hell we were doing there ? We said we just wanted to take a tour of the base and see what was on static display...he said " Sir this is not a tourist attraction. please turn around and leave". Well we kind of sheepishly got out of there and felt like morons but on the way out we were driving and noticed a crapload of satellite/tracking antennas on the mountain or hillside near there and figured there must be some kind of weird stuff going on there...this was probably 1990 or so !!

Plenty of weird stuff is correct. Ill tell you more at SCR9
You should have been there when the rocket motor blew up on the far side of the base http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I was there for that one and the B-1 landing on the lake bed with its nose gear retracted. Stationed there from 87-91.
So were you there?

Could have, we used to let the ladies from town through the gates to come to the airmans club.
Quite often I could be found over at the auto hobby shop. Which was run by a gruff, foul man named Harry who could have played that guy on "Christine".

I was a crew chief on the MC-130H Combat Talon II. We got the AC-130U 4 months before I got out. I had a root beer brown 78 Camaro. Followed by a white 68, 327/glide. The dorm I lived in was 2416 across the street from the auto hobby shop. Did you spend any time over at the shop?

not a whole lot of time if any at the shop since we seemed to always be in 12 hr shifts and thats if i wasnt in the desert. I lived out in Cal City when I was there.

Did you ever get out to the junkyard in Cal City? The older black gentleman named Otis ran the place. He had a white GTO I think a 66. He drove it daily. I almost traded my 78 plus cash for it. I had just dropped a new 350 in my 78 and decided not to. Oh if I could turn back time....
