The XP-887 was indeed the New Chevy Vega 2300 for 1971.
In it's infancy they were touting it as the next best thing since sliced bread.
I aquired a large collection recently, and have a few a boxes 3 feet high full of Chevrolet zone & dealer letters,as well as 16mm movies about it's unveiling. The marketing & promotional materials planned for it were serious stuff.Chevrolet saw the Handwriting on the wall with High Insurance rates and Gas prices forecast.
I have yet to read everything, but its hype and enthusiasm were fever rate!

Seems Don had big plans for it as well. In the 3rd paragraph of this letter Don is explaining how he would like to order 500 of these units for SCCA racing.

That would make sense.
They do reference it's lineage to the Corvair in my materials.

Here's the reply letter from Ed Cole to Don Yenko, dated August 1, 1969, referring to the XP-887 (Vega)...It directly refers to the letter you posted above, in which Don wrote to Ed Cole his interest in the XP-887... I thought it was pretty cool how the president of GM made the comment that the car could use some "Yenko-izing"... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif It seems Don and Ed Cole had a pretty close relationship, and communicated back and forth quite frequently. Also pretty cool that both of these letters survived some 35+ years... Tom, I think you should give me the one you have so I can have the set... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Sunday night I took a pic of the first Chevy Vega built. It was at the GM Heritage center. http://www.yenko.net/attachments/182389-P1010015.JPG
