That is the US Navy's F4 "Black Bunny" Playboy Phantom breaking the sound barrier. In 1971, it was legal to fly the speed of sound over the continental US (at least they did on the Air Force base I lived on). http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

That's gotta be photoshopped..750 mph thirty feet off the deck at a civilian airport? Is that a COPO Biscayne wagon about to lose it's date coded glass? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Heres the pic again with the Caption. Notice someone else claims taking it as well but I would have to go with the folks at McDonnell Douglas Corp who have the pic in the gallery

F-4 Phantoms were particularly loud due to their engine
design. Seeing them fly in formation type maneuvers was
always a thrill. I can't imaging the sound of this F-4
breaking the sound barrier so close to the deck. It would
have been one of those "once-in-a-lifetime" type memories.
Wish I'd been there http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif

Very cool shot! . Wouldn't that hurt if you were on the ground and enveloped in the boom? . Hey....another '70 Townsman wagon! ~ Pete

Here's a link to a clip of a jet breaking the sound barrier over the ocean with the same effect. Pretty cool clip.

If you like "vapor clouds" heres one for you.

This one has more to do with humidity and angle of attack but still cool.

I just looked at the clip a couple more times. . Does the plane do a bit of a dip as it comes through the barrier on the close up....or is it the camera guy moving? ~ Pete

I thought I noticed a bit of a dip too. Doing that type of run over the water that low, he my have run into cooler, more dense pockets of air.
Once I went to Edwards Air Force Base for the air show and got to see and hear Chuck Yeager breaking the sound barrier. The boom was one thing but seeing the shock wave hitting the high clouds was something I'll never forget. It was amazing to have such a hugh crowd of people so quite to listen for the boom and then to hear them gasp at the sight. I think I said something like "oh my God!".
