i can remember car shopping with my dad for our families 68 impala, i always searched out the hipo cars. i was 12 years old then and very interested in fast cars. i can remember seeing some of the 427 side marker emblems with red background. i don't think this meant they were 425 hp cars, one was on a stationwagon. anyone know the reason for red vs black background, if any? 396/425 blr

My '68 427-385 SS came new with the red markers.

Are you talking about this emblem? I believe it was early production. I know they're pretty scarce. Dick Harrell used the inserts right over the top of the "396" bezels on his 68 conversions.

You are correct Joe.

Rick, did they make the plain (non SS) 427 bezels without the red background? I have seen 396 ones but any 427 ones I've seen have the red background. Question #2, was there an SS427 bezel with a red "427" portion? I could swear I have seen photos of this, but never saw one in person... the one's I have are black/stainless with no red, as shown below.

my 68 SS427 has the makers simular to camarojoes, the SS has black background and the 427 numbers are silver (like SS) and the lower background is red. it a 385 hp. yes the red background emblems (non SS) are the ones is asking about, ok early models. thanks 396/425blr

Sounds like you have the ones i was just asking about... any chance you could post a pic of them? Got any spares? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Wonder why some had red and some were black? might also be an early/late thing. I once believed the only thing that originally used the red 427 ones i posted above were non-SS cars, but from what Buizilla says, SS cars could have them too, unless he's talking about the SS427 ones with the red background on the lower portion. Interesting topic. Rick Nelson... any ideas?

Mine were exactly like up top with the full red panel and silver letters, early Dec. 67 build date, SS427-385.

I hope you figure it out... I'd like to see them. If its easier to e mail them, send them to me at [email protected] and I'll post them. Rick, great info and pics there...the Canada thing could be a possibility too... Buizilla, where was your car built?

I'd swear I've seen some of the SS427 foil versions with blue backgrounds too. Years ago I parted out two 427 wagons that had the red foil (non SS) 427 emblems and the emblems sold for good prices at swap meets. Can only imagine what they go for now.

Joe, I sold the car to a friend locally about 5 years ago, I owned it for 10 years... it's the black one on page 2 with the hideaways on Rick's site. My friend added the hideaways, I like the look. He has the original build sheets I gave him. My friend, I think, removed the red plates for safety reasons. Car was originally sold new at Bill Heard Chev. in Columbus, GA, original owner was John Peacock from Midland, Ga. who worked at the dealership, the car was his wife's driver. I can't, for the life of me, remember the build plant. I've owned over 125 vehicles, and I regret selling that one the most... in fact, I have a contract with him that says he can never sell it again without me getting *first right of refusal*, that was part of my sale deal to him.

Jim,
Did your Bill Heard car get an emblem, license plate, or plate frame?

BUIZILLA

Marlin, it had/may still have a tag affixed to the trunk deck for sure, don't know about the plate, or plate frame... The trunk emblem said *World's Largest Chev Dealer* maybe?

I wish I could take credit for that site as it is a fantastic resource for the SS427 Impalas but sadly the pictures of my car on there are my only addition to the site. It is owned and operated by Mark (sorry I don't have his last name). Great guy and researcher however.

I let one of my best friends have a '67 427 425 hp silver vette cpe years ago under the same promice. He had the balls to call me up one day a few years later and announce that he had traded it for a new Hog. He said well I didn't think you were still interested in that old car since you had so many others.

He is dead now. Wish I had had a part of that but he had a heart attack.

I live in the town with Bill Heard Chevy. If I run across any old dealership badges I'll let you know if you are interested. John Peacock lives 1 mile from me and has run his own body shop for years. He is one of the local Corvette gurus. Small world.

Ask and you shall receive... Here's a 4th version, as found on 396/425blr's car. This is the variation I was referring to in my earlier post. Very cool. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Wow! and I thought I had seen and knew most every trait to these cars! Joe, can you or I send a copy of this to Mark. He and I have never discussed this emblem and am sure he would love to see it. Can I have it????

Rick, 396/425blr sent me the pic, it is of his car. He would be the one to ask. Provided they are the original emblems, they would be the fourth version of 427 bezels for 1968. I knew I had seen a photo of them on a car somewhere before, so this is not the first i have seen or heard of them, but I've never actually viewed one up close. Pretty neat piece huh? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

[/ QUOTE ] Hi Dave, I spoke to John right after I bought the car in Dec '88, very friendly and sharp guy. John Carter from Louisville bought the car from Peacock and then flipped it to me outside of the Kruse Miami Beach Auction, same night that Gary bought his white Yenko Camaro there.... I think Peacock was real tight bud's with Lamar Walden?

--------What a small world, Jim. My 1986 El Camino was bought new by John Carter. I bought it from a bud of his just weeks after he let it go. He has quite a drag-racing history down around there, you know..........Bill S
