A little advice for the young, and not so young. Buy the best camera you can afford and take twice as many pictures as you think that you need. With digital cameras, unlimited, quality pictures won't break the bank, just store the ones you aren't ready to print. Looking back at all those grainy pictures from 110 cameras and the like can be aggravating. Restoration work would certainly be alot easier with sharp images. You don't get much when you blow up a picture that is grainy to start with.

Has anyone come across a compact digital camera that can take wide angle pictures comparable to a 35 mm SLR camera using a 28mm lens? None of the digitals that I have seen take wide angle shots. They all talk about the zoom feature which isn't useful for full car shots.

Glad you brought this up. I've been meaning to buy a nice camera and have wanted to ask Bruce(Xplantdad) what he use's to take those great pics.

Bruce, any words of wisdom?

Phil, My CANON PowerShot S60 (similar to S70,S80) has a Wide Angle Lens and 3.5 optical zoom vs most 5MP Cameras 3.0 ZOOM. Shop On Line for this and read Camera Reviews at sites like.....
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/

I'll be the first to admit I have far to go in learning how better to take pictures....but I can tell you from my recent Barrett-Jackson trip.....it is NICE to be able to stand relatively close to a car and have the wide angle lens capture ALL of the car.....

Tom,

I have a Fuji Fine Pix S5100, which is now 2 years old. The newer model is the S5200, which does everything that mine does, but has a few more pixels...

Fuji's site has a good write up on the features of the camera HERE! (http://www.fujifilm.com/JSP/fuji/epartners/digitalS5200Overview.jsp?item=I836806&dbid=836806& urltype=overview&NavBarId=I836806) . What I like about this camera is that it's fully automatic, but you can also override all the automatic features and make it fully manual like a regular 35mm camera...

You can have selectable aperature and selectable shutter speed. It also takes great video.

I paid ~$375 for mine 2 Christmases ago at Best Buy...If you check their website HERE! (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7520499&type=product&id=11272107 99681), you'll notice it's $399.99 now. They go on sale all the time, too...so check your Sunday Best Buy ad.

The camera is well worth the money and is also great in low light situations with no tripod.

I had one of the guys I know at Pavillions who looks at the pictures all the time ask me the same question...and I told him the same thing...He got the S5200 and is jazzed with it!

Enough information, Tom? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Bruce the Fuji is very nice but too damn big. Chuck, that Canon may be the ticket. I have the Canon SD400 now and it it tiny and a geat size to carry, but no wide angle. The S70 still looks pretty small and with a 28mm equivalent lens looks like a good camera for car pics. Thanks guys. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Eddie, most all of them were, yes....I'd say 98%. It's an awesome camera...and I've seen the newer version on sale for ~ $350.... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Oh, and one final thing with the Fuji...you can use all of your 35mm filters on it , too. They screw onto the front the same as a normal 35mm.

COPO...that's cool! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Thanks Bruce..

The art of taking good cars pics has always seemed to elude me so I need all the help I can get. I will check out Fuji. Not too worried about size. My wife is strong if necessary. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

Amen Keith. Ever since I bought my Sony Cyber-Shot with 2.5" LCD monitor and 3x optical zoom on 12-23-04 I have had nothing but fun with it. It takes excellent pictures and I dump the ones I don't like and e-mail the good ones to Costco for developing. I also use it in my eBay sales where good photo quality definitely helps sell things.

Canon PowerShot S70 is 7MP Camera and NEW S80 is ??????
I just figured S60 with same guts and lense was PLENTY good at a now discounted price due to newer models, which happens constantly in digital photography......
I did buy a HIGH SPEED 512 Flash Card and a Longer life battery than comes with Camera....I know it increases intial price, but I felt it neccessary if not inperative

I agree, I also use a S5100 and after getting use to all the available settings I found it takes killer pictures. Closes thing to a true SLR you can get with paying 900.00+

Bruce,

About how many pictures can you take with your camera before you have to change batteries? I too am looking for a new camera. My current one (Minolta) eats batteries and takes about 12 pictures before it needs new batteries so I am concerned with battery life as well as good pictures. Thanks.

Spring for the Lithium battery. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/scholar.gif
Worth the investment. I have 8 NiCad batteries, and they need recharging after about 50-60 flash photos.
The Lith battery from my old camera still works after 2 years, and has never let me down. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

I have a Canon PowerShot S40 (http://www.dpreview.com/news/0110/01100203canons40quickpreview.asp) camera I purchased second-hand from a member over at TC a few years ago, and despite the fact that I'm certainly amongst the world's top 2% WORST photographers, it still manages to give me decent pictures.

No complaints what so ever other than this thing goes through a battery like the Cookie monster goes through Fig Newton's. I can get maybe 10-15 pictures or maybe 2 or 3 30-second video captures on a full charge before the "low battery" light comes on.

Where's a decent place online to pick up batteries for this thing?

I would say your camera has a problem with only getting 12 pics before the bats are dead. I used my Fuji S5100 for 4 days at B-J and only had to change the 4 AA bats once. Around 300 pics 1600x1200

I took around 800 pics at BJ and Pavillions and Dave's collection (basically Tuesday through Sunday)...and I replaced the batteries 3 times. Itook a fair amount of fill flash pictures, also.

I buy the batteries in bulk at Costco...so it's not really expensive. I haven't tried the rechargeable batteries yet....Hmmm http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif

One other cool thing about the Fuji is that there are two digital viewfinders...one big square one on the back like most digital cameras have...but also a small one where the viewfinder on a normal 35mm SLR camera would be...I use the smaller one most often...it's more comfortable for me that way (I'm used to a 35mm SLR camera) and it uses less battery power that way. Those big viewfinder displays eat batteries like crazy...something else to consider when buying a camera http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

I use CASIO EX-S500, very slim camera. I have a chip card on over 1000 for storage, takes about 450-500 hi quality pics..

Rechargeable battery is included, and a docking station too charge, so you dont have to take the battery out, use the same station for transfer of pics too.

I have bought 3 of this cameras, after i bought mine, we use a lot of cameras at my company here, and everything is really self explaining.. 2" inch screen,

Cost me something like 530,- US with the battery, docking station, and memory card.

My Canon uses this re-chargeable battery. (thankfully the camera came with 2 of them).

I haven't purchased replacements yet because--

A) I don't know dookie about camera batteries (i.e. what to look for/what to avoid)

and

B) Not sure where to buy them (don't trust camera stores/Radio Shack salespeople).

Any other compact digital cameras out there with an equivalent SLR 28 mm wide angle lens?
