I'm ready to upgrade to a 5 or 6 speed trans and I don't want to have to do alot of mods especially cut up my floor. I'm currently running a M21 w/12 bolt & 4:10s but now my motor is pushing 600+ lbs of torque at 5500 Rs. Anyone have a recommendation?
Please and thank you. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

I like Jerico's. You can get them in 4 or 5 speed. They are the strongest. You can get them with syncros also. Jerico Transmissions-(704)782-4343. Also try Eric Swarr at (610)489-4029. He deals in Tremec and is a nice guy. Sam

Open your wallet though for a Jerico, $$$$! One of the guys on 'The Brew Crew' runs one in an L78, in B/S - loves it, but I think it cost around $5-6k.

I've seen four or five articles about this exact swap in Hot Rod/Car Craft/Chevy Hi-Performance/Super Chevy, etc. in the last 2 years. There are bolt in kits for this swap with a Tremec that can handle the torque. Suggest you go to the Camaros.net site and do a search as it has been discussed there numerous times.

I was thinking the Tremec also but his torque numbers are up there pretty good and I thought the Tremec 5 and 6 speeds were rated below 600 lb/ft. I was thinking the Richmond 5 speed is pretty strong but I don't think that is an overdrive trans if that is what you're looking for.

Richmond 5 speed is not OD in 5th, but the standard first gear is something like 3:28, so you can swap a 3:08 ring and pinion in and still have a lower overall ratio in first gear. In fact, something in the neighborhood of a 2:75 gear would make it comparable in first to your current set up. Less than two grand for a brand new unit. Another couple hundred for the final drive gears.

If you want over drive, the Richmond 6 speed is .76 in 6th. Same standard 3:28 first gear. About a grand more than the 5 speed.

Just a thought.

Here you go: '67 Camaro TKO conversion (http://www.keislerauto.com/gm/camaro-gen1-kits.html)

Tremec makes a TKO500 or TKO600 (numbers indicate lb-ft rating) and the 600 isn't much more than the 500. We're picking up a TKO600 soon ourselves...would like to go Jericho, but can't justify spending over twice the price of the Tremec. But boy oh boy do those clutchless shifts sound wicked! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

I used the Keisler TK500 kit in my 67 plain Jane coupe behind a GM 350HO crate motor and absolutely love it. I didn't have to cut up the console and from inside the cockpit you'd think I was running an old school 4-speed.

I think I want an OD trans. The Tremec 600 sounds more of what I'm looking for and as long as it's around$2500 I think I could swing it.
Thanks Jeff. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

Seems the Tremec getting some talk. I'll have to research this. I just don't want to cut up the floor. It's a factory console car.
Thanks for the input. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

Jeff..Thanks for the input. That's my biggest concern right now. Keeping the original floor together.
Thank you for your input.

Tremec and Keisler are both in the Knoxville, TN area and Keisler puts together kits that include everything you need including the Tremec tranny of your choice to install a 5 or 6 speed in your Camaro. They even modify the tranny to use a speedo cable.

Go to the discussion forums at www.lateral-g.net (http://www.lateral-g.net) or www.pro-touring.com. (http://www.pro-touring.com.) There are plenty of guys using overdrive transmissions there and have plenty of opinions. There are now T56's that handle over 1000 hp.

I'm running the TKO 500 in my 71 RS. Best money I've spent. Bought mine from dark Horses in Washington state for $1750 shipped with the speedo adapter. Keisler kit was in the 2600 range w/ everthing and 8 weeks behind. Not a big deal to make a crossmember had mine done in 4-5 hrs but did it on the lift. Would reccomend it to anyone.

TKO 500 is a 5 speed, your signature line says it has a 6 speed, which do you have? Does Dark Horse make a kit to put the 6sp in a 2nd Gen?

Remember Mike, You do not have to buy new. All brands are out there used and in good condition. I would call Eric Swarr and just talk. Also look in National Dragster for some good deals on Jericos. Everything and anything is out there. Sam http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

<font color="blue">What about the Gear Vendors unit (http://www.gearvendors.com/hrgm4sm.html)?
It's a bolt on unit, gives you the OD &amp; all you really need is a new driveshaft (so you can put it back ti stock).
It's a little pricey, but, it can handle anything you throw at it &amp; you dont need a new CLUTCH, SHIFTER, yadda, yadda, yadda.
Think about it. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif </font>

I beleive that the Gear Vendors overdrive requires modification to the trans tunnel on some applications, so you might want to check that out if you want to keep things stock looking.

I did the swap two years ago, before the TK600 was available. At the time Keisler was taking forever to fill the orders because they were just starting to sell the kits and they were modifying each tranny so the stock shifter location could be maintained. I'm not sure what their lead time is now, but we actually swapped in the 350 first, then waited another two months for the Tremec to arrive. About the only thing I might change is going to a ball knob rather than the T-handle. Otherwise I love it and it shifts like butter. (Even smoother than our "old" 96 Mustang GT which also had a Tremec 5 speed.)

The Tremecs found in production cars seem to be hit &amp; miss...the T56 in the LS1 Camaros is a good example...it was pretty common to hear of new cars having to have immediate tranny work/replacement. A guy here in town has had 3 SS Camaros, and special ordered the last one...he drove right after they rolled it off the truck and the thing wouldn't go into reverse and would jump out of a couple of the forward gears...he ended up taking it anyway, and thrashed the crap out of it knowing they were gonna replace it anyway.
